CHAPTER 9 — THE FATHER’S HIDDEN SIN

The hardest truths were never the ones hidden by enemies.

They were the ones hidden by the people who loved you.

Mariana Escalante had spent her entire life believing her father was the one person who would never betray her.

Rafael Escalante was the man who raised her after losing her mother.

The man who protected her.

The man who taught her strength.

The man who built an empire and placed the world at her feet.

But now...

A single sentence from Victor Blackwood had planted a seed of doubt.

"Ask Rafael Escalante why your mother was running away from him the night she disappeared."

Mariana wanted to believe Victor was lying.

She wanted to believe it was another manipulation.

Another psychological attack from a man who had spent decades destroying her family.

But there was one problem.

Her father had not denied it.

The Escalante estate was silent that evening.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that existed when a family was protecting a secret.

Mariana walked through the hallway filled with portraits of her ancestors.

Generations of Escalantes.

People who built businesses.

People who survived wars.

People who protected the family name at any cost.

She stopped in front of her mother's portrait.

Elena Escalante.

The woman everyone remembered as perfect.

Kind.

Beautiful.

But Mariana suddenly wondered...

Did anyone truly know her?

Or did everyone only know the version they wanted to remember?

Her father's office door was open.

Rafael was inside.

Sitting alone.

Older than he had looked yesterday.

More tired.

As if carrying a burden for twenty-eight years had finally become too heavy.

He didn't look surprised when Mariana entered.

"I knew you would come."

She closed the door behind her.

"Then you knew Victor would find me."

Rafael looked down.

"Yes."

The answer shocked her.

"You knew?"

"I knew he would eventually try."

Mariana's eyes hardened.

"And you still said nothing?"

Rafael stood.

"Because I wanted to protect you."

She shook her head.

"Everyone says that."

A pause.

"Every person who hides the truth says they are protecting someone."

Her words hurt.

Because Rafael knew she was right.

"Tell me everything."

Her voice was calm.

But her father heard the pain beneath it.

Rafael walked toward the old cabinet near the wall.

He opened it.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Mariana had never seen it before.

He placed it on the desk.

"This belonged to your mother."

Her breath caught.

He opened it.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

Documents.

Memories.

Things that had been hidden for decades.

Mariana picked up the first letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her mother's.

She read the first line.

Rafael, if anything happens to me, you need to know the truth about what I discovered.

Her hands began trembling.

"Why do you have this?"

Rafael closed his eyes.

"Because she gave it to me the night she disappeared."

Mariana looked up.

"Then why didn't you show me?"

His voice broke slightly.

"Because the letter wasn't finished."

She froze.

"What?"

Rafael took a deep breath.

"Your mother was writing it while she believed someone was following her."

He handed Mariana another page.

The final sentence.

Only a few words.

I know who is betraying us.

Mariana looked at her father.

"Who?"

Rafael didn't answer.

And that silence was the answer.

Twenty-eight years earlier...

Rafael Escalante was not the untouchable billionaire the world knew today.

He was a businessman trying to survive.

Victor Blackwood was his closest partner.

Together, they created investments.

Together, they expanded their influence.

Together, they dreamed of building something powerful.

But ambition changes people.

Victor wanted control.

Not partnership.

Not success.

Control.

When Rafael discovered Victor was secretly manipulating markets, he confronted him.

But there was something Rafael never told anyone.

Something he kept hidden.

He didn't immediately expose Victor.

Because Victor threatened him.

Not with money.

Not with business.

With Elena.

"If you destroy me," Victor had said.

"I destroy everything you love."

And Rafael was afraid.

For the first time in his life...

Rafael Escalante was afraid.

Mariana stared at her father.

"You knew Victor was dangerous."

"Yes."

"You knew he threatened our family."

"Yes."

"And you still let him walk away?"

Rafael looked devastated.

"I thought I could handle him."

Mariana laughed quietly.

But there was no humor.

"That's what powerful men always say."

"They think they can control monsters."

She looked at the letters.

"But monsters don't want control."

"They want destruction."

Rafael lowered his head.

"I made a mistake."

"No."

Mariana's voice became colder.

"You made a choice."

The difference was painful.

A mistake was accidental.

A choice was deliberate.

Then Rafael revealed the part that broke her heart.

"The night your mother disappeared..."

Mariana looked up.

"I was not with her."

She waited.

"I was meeting Victor."

Her eyes widened.

"What?"

Rafael swallowed.

"Victor told me he had proof someone inside my company was betraying me."

"So you left her?"

His silence answered.

Mariana stepped back.

"You left Mom alone?"

"I thought I would return within an hour."

His voice cracked.

"I thought there was time."

But there wasn't.

There never was.

For years, Mariana had remembered her mother as someone who was taken from them.

Now she discovered something worse.

Her mother had been abandoned in her final moments.

Not intentionally.

Not cruelly.

But because her father made the wrong decision.

And that decision changed everything.

"Did Mom know?"

Rafael looked confused.

"Know what?"

"That you met Victor."

Another silence.

Then:

"Yes."

Mariana closed her eyes.

Everything connected.

Her mother wasn't running away from Rafael because she stopped loving him.

She was hurt because he chose Victor over her safety.

Meanwhile, Andrew Whitmore was searching through his own past.

After discovering he had been a pawn, he couldn't sleep.

He reviewed old documents.

Old emails.

Old meetings.

Looking for the moment his life stopped being his.

Then he found something.

A photograph from fifteen years ago.

A young Andrew.

Victor beside him.

And another person.

A woman.

Andrew stared.

Because he recognized her.

Elena Escalante.

His blood ran cold.

Why would Victor have a photograph with Mariana's mother?

At midnight, Andrew arrived at Escalante Tower.

Mariana was still awake.

When she saw him, she immediately knew something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Andrew placed the photograph on the table.

Mariana looked down.

And froze.

Her mother.

Victor.

Andrew.

Together.

The date was written on the back.

Three months before Elena disappeared.

Mariana whispered:

"No..."

Andrew looked at her.

"I never met your mother."

"Not according to my memory."

"But this photo proves I did."

Mariana picked it up.

Her hands shook.

"Why would Victor put you in a photo with my mother?"

Neither of them had an answer.

Then Daniel entered.

His face was serious.

"I found something else."

He placed a file on the desk.

"Something that changes everything."

Mariana opened it.

Inside was a document from twenty-eight years ago.

A DNA report.

She stared.

"What is this?"

Daniel looked at her.

"The reason Victor Blackwood has been obsessed with the Escalante family."

Mariana read the title.

Then her world stopped.

PATERNITY VERIFICATION REPORT.

Her eyes moved down the page.

A name.

A result.

A truth hidden for decades.

She looked at Rafael.

Then at Andrew.

Then back at the document.

Because the secret her family protected...

Was not about money.

Not about business.

Not about power.

It was about blood.

And suddenly Mariana realized something terrifying.

The question was never:

"Who killed her mother?"

May you like

The real question was:

"Who was Mariana Escalante's true father?"
