CHAPTER 18 — ELENA ESCALANTE’S FINAL WILL

The greatest battles were never fought with weapons.

They were fought with documents.

With signatures.

With names written on pieces of paper that could destroy kingdoms.

For decades, the Escalante empire survived because of one thing.

Control.

Control over money.

Control over information.

Control over the truth.

But Elena Escalante had done something nobody expected.

She had prepared for the day when everyone would fight over what she left behind.

She had created one final move.

A final decision.

A final will.

And the name inside it would change everything.

The courtroom was filled before sunrise.

Reporters surrounded the building.

Investors waited anxiously.

Executives whispered.

The entire financial world wanted to know one thing:

Who owned the Escalante empire?

For weeks, everyone believed it would be Mariana.

Then Sofia appeared.

Then Victor claimed his bloodline.

Then Victoria Laurent returned.

Every secret created another question.

But nobody expected Elena's final decision.

Mariana sat beside Sofia.

For the first time, they were not on opposite sides.

They were together.

Andrew sat behind them.

He no longer carried the arrogance of the man who once ruled the Whitmore empire.

That man was gone.

The woman sitting beside him now was the only person he wanted to protect.

Across the courtroom sat Victor Blackwood.

Confident.

Calm.

Certain.

He believed the law would prove him right.

Because Victor had always believed one thing:

Blood created ownership.

The judge entered.

The room became silent.

"Today, we review the final testament of Elena Escalante."

The screen behind him displayed an old photograph.

Elena.

Young.

Powerful.

Alive.

Mariana looked at the image.

For a moment...

She wasn't a billionaire.

She wasn't an heir.

She was just a daughter missing her mother.

The executor stepped forward.

An elderly woman named Clara Bennett.

A trusted lawyer who had worked with Elena before her disappearance.

She carried a sealed envelope.

"This document was created twenty-eight years ago."

The courtroom whispered.

"Why was it hidden?"

Clara looked at everyone.

"Because Elena requested that it only be opened when both of her daughters stood together."

All eyes turned toward Mariana and Sofia.

Victor's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Mariana noticed.

He knew.

He didn't know everything.

But he knew enough.

The will was dangerous.

Clara opened the envelope.

And began reading.

To my daughters, Mariana Elena Escalante and Sofia Elena Laurent...

Mariana held Sofia's hand.

The words felt unreal.

Her mother was speaking to them from the past.

If this letter is being read, then the secrets I tried to protect have finally been discovered.

I am sorry for every year you spent believing you were alone.

Sofia lowered her eyes.

I am sorry for every moment you questioned whether you were loved.

A tear fell.

Clara continued.

But I need you both to understand something.

The Escalante empire was never built by one person.

It was built by trust.

And trust cannot exist where there is greed.

Everyone looked toward Victor.

He remained expressionless.

Then came the sentence that shocked the entire courtroom.

Therefore, I do not leave my empire to either daughter alone.

Silence.

The reporters looked confused.

Mariana looked at Sofia.

Clara continued.

I leave it to the person who understands sacrifice more than ownership.

The courtroom waited.

Everyone expected a name.

A person.

A secret heir.

Then Clara spoke.

The guardian of the Escalante legacy shall be Rafael Escalante.

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Shock.

Confusion.

Rafael looked frozen.

Mariana turned toward him.

Her father looked as surprised as everyone else.

"I never knew."

Clara nodded.

"Because Elena didn't want you to know."

Victor stood.

"Impossible."

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Blackwood, sit down."

Victor ignored him.

"Rafael Escalante betrayed Elena."

"He lost the right to control anything."

Clara looked at him calmly.

"Elena disagreed."

She opened another page.

"She wrote..."

Rafael made mistakes.

But mistakes made from fear are different from betrayals made from greed.

Rafael closed his eyes.

The words broke him.

Because Elena had understood him.

Even after everything.

Then another surprise appeared.

The will continued.

However, Rafael is not the owner.

Everyone became silent again.

Clara explained:

"Rafael is only the temporary guardian."

"Until both daughters reach an agreement."

Mariana frowned.

"Agreement?"

Clara nodded.

"Elena created a condition."

She read:

My daughters must decide together what the future of this empire will become.

If they choose power over family, the empire will be divided.

If they choose family over power, the empire will continue.

Victor smiled.

A small smile.

Because he believed he found a weakness.

"They will never agree."

He looked at Mariana.

"She has spent her entire life believing she was the only heir."

Then he looked at Sofia.

"You spent your entire life believing you were forgotten."

He smiled.

"You are too different."

Mariana looked at Sofia.

For a moment, the courtroom disappeared.

They remembered everything.

The pain.

The loneliness.

The lies.

But they also remembered the first moment they met.

Two strangers.

Two daughters.

One mother.

Sofia spoke first.

"I don't want to fight you."

Mariana nodded.

"Neither do I."

Victor's expression changed.

The judge asked:

"Do you both agree to follow Elena Escalante's wishes?"

Mariana stood.

"Yes."

Sofia stood beside her.

"Yes."

The courtroom became silent.

Because everyone expected a war.

Instead...

They chose each other.

But Victor was not finished.

He stood suddenly.

"Before this court accepts anything..."

He removed a folder.

"There is evidence Elena Escalante was mentally unstable when this will was created."

Gasps filled the room.

Mariana froze.

"What?"

Victor smiled.

"I have medical records."

Clara's expression changed.

"No."

Victor placed the documents down.

"Elena was suffering from severe psychological distress."

"Her decisions can be challenged."

The judge examined the papers.

The courtroom waited.

Mariana looked at Victor.

"You forged them."

Victor smiled.

"Can you prove it?"

And for the first time...

Mariana had no immediate answer.

Because Victor had planned everything.

Every move.

Every possibility.

Then Andrew stood.

Everyone looked at him.

Victor smiled.

"Andrew."

"Still protecting your wife?"

Andrew ignored him.

He walked toward the evidence table.

"I know these documents."

The room became quiet.

Victor's smile disappeared.

"What?"

Andrew looked at him.

"I've seen these before."

"Twenty years ago."

Victor's expression changed.

Andrew continued:

"My mother showed them to me."

Mariana looked shocked.

"You knew?"

Andrew shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"But I remember the signature."

He pointed at the documents.

"This signature isn't Elena's."

The judge looked closer.

Andrew continued:

"It's Victor's handwriting."

The courtroom erupted.

Victor's face finally changed.

Not fear.

Rage.

Because for the first time...

Someone had exposed his method.

Someone had seen through his plan.

Andrew looked at Mariana.

"I spent years helping people like him win."

A pause.

"Not anymore."

The judge ordered the documents to be investigated.

Victor was forced to remain in court.

But before security escorted him away, he leaned toward Mariana.

"You think this is over?"

She stared at him.

"It is."

Victor smiled.

"No."

His voice became a whisper.

"You still don't know the last thing your mother discovered."

Mariana froze.

"What?"

Victor smiled.

"The reason Elena disappeared."

A pause.

"The reason she trusted no one."

He stepped away.

"Ask your father what happened the night she came back."

That night, Mariana returned to the old Escalante estate.

She found Rafael alone.

Waiting.

Because he knew the question was coming.

"What happened that night?"

Rafael looked at her.

The pain in his eyes was immediate.

"The night your mother disappeared?"

Mariana nodded.

"No."

Her voice lowered.

"The night she came back."

Rafael froze.

Mariana stepped closer.

"Victor said she returned after leaving."

Silence.

Then Rafael whispered:

"She did."

Mariana felt her heart stop.

"Where is she?"

Rafael looked toward the window.

And said the words that changed everything:

"Mariana..."

"Your mother wasn't killed twenty-eight years ago."

A pause.

"She was alive."

The world stopped.

Mariana couldn't breathe.

"Alive?"

Rafael nodded slowly.

"Elena survived."

"She lived."

"She watched from the shadows."

"She protected you."

Mariana's eyes filled with tears.

"Then why didn't she come back?"

Rafael looked broken.

"Because she believed someone was still hunting her."

"Who?"

Rafael looked at her.

And answered:

"The person who just walked into this courtroom."

Mariana froze.

Victor.

But then Rafael added:

"And the person you least expected."

The door behind them opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Mariana dropped the documents in her hand.

Because she knew that face.

She had seen it in every childhood memory.

Every photograph.

Every dream.

Her mother's eyes.

Her mother's voice.

Her mother.

May you like

Elena Escalante.

Alive.
