CHAPTER 16 — THE TWO DAUGHTERS OF ELENA ESCALANTE

For twenty-eight years...

Two daughters lived completely different lives.

One grew up surrounded by wealth.

The other grew up believing she had no family.

One inherited an empire.

The other inherited a mystery.

One carried the Escalante name.

The other carried the pain of being forgotten.

But neither of them knew the truth.

They were never enemies.

They were two halves of the same story.

The old recording continued playing in Mariana's mind.

Her mother's voice.

Her mother's face.

A woman who had been gone for decades.

A woman who somehow still knew the danger coming for her daughters.

"The person who destroyed our family was not Victor."

Those words changed everything.

Because for years, everyone had been chasing the same enemy.

Victor Blackwood.

He was ruthless.

Manipulative.

Dangerous.

But maybe...

He wasn't the beginning of the nightmare.

Maybe he was only another player.

The original Escalante estate stood abandoned outside the city.

The place where Rafael and Elena began their life together.

The place where Mariana spent her earliest childhood years.

The place where everything ended.

Now...

It was where the final truth waited.

Mariana arrived with Sofia, Andrew, Daniel, and Gabriel.

Gabriel had recovered enough to walk.

But he was different.

The arrogant man who once believed he deserved everything was gone.

He carried the weight of his mistakes.

"Are you sure you want to enter?"

Gabriel asked.

Mariana looked at the old house.

"No."

A pause.

"But I need to."

Inside the estate, dust covered the furniture.

The walls held memories.

Every room told a story.

A family dinner.

A child's laughter.

A mother's love.

And beneath it all...

A hidden tragedy.

Daniel scanned the building.

"Someone has been here recently."

Mariana looked at him.

"Victor?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"Someone else."

They discovered a hidden room behind Elena's old library.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

Recordings.

Everything Elena had collected before her disappearance.

Sofia picked up one photograph.

Her hands trembled.

It showed Elena holding two babies.

Mariana.

And Sofia.

Together.

A mother with both daughters.

A family that should have existed.

But didn't.

Sofia whispered:

"She loved us."

Mariana looked at the picture.

"Yes."

For the first time, neither of them felt jealousy.

Only sadness.

Because they both lost the same thing.

Their mother.

Then they found Elena's final letter.

Not a message.

Not a warning.

A confession.

Mariana opened it.

Her mother's handwriting filled the page.

My beloved daughters,

If you are reading this together, then somehow the truth survived.

Mariana and Sofia looked at each other.

Together.

That word mattered.

I spent years believing I could protect everyone by carrying every secret alone.

I was wrong.

A tear fell from Mariana's eye.

Secrets do not protect families.

They only create new wounds.

The letter continued.

Elena revealed the truth about the night she disappeared.

She wasn't running away.

She wasn't escaping Rafael.

She wasn't trying to betray anyone.

She was meeting someone.

Someone who promised to help expose Victor Blackwood.

Someone she trusted.

Someone who knew everything about the Escalante family.

And that person betrayed her.

The person who arranged my disappearance was someone who knew my heart.

Someone who knew I would never suspect them.

Mariana's breathing became heavier.

Sofia whispered:

"Who?"

They continued reading.

Then the final paragraph appeared.

Her name is Margaret Whitmore.

Everyone froze.

Andrew stepped back.

"My mother?"

Nobody spoke.

The truth landed harder than any accusation.

Margaret.

The woman who spent years humiliating Mariana.

The woman who pretended to hate her.

The woman who had kept Elena's letter hidden.

She wasn't just connected.

She was the center of it.

A second recording was discovered.

This time...

Margaret's voice.

Twenty-eight years younger.

Terrified.

"Elena, you don't understand."

The recording played.

Elena answered:

"You helped Victor."

Margaret cried.

"I didn't know it would go this far."

"You gave him information."

"I thought he only wanted financial control."

Elena's voice became cold.

"You destroyed my family."

Margaret whispered:

"I'm sorry."

Then another voice appeared.

Victor.

"You should have listened to me."

The recording ended.

Andrew closed his eyes.

His mother.

Victor.

Elena.

All connected.

His entire life was built on a lie.

Again.

Mariana looked at him.

This time, she saw something different.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"You didn't know."

Andrew shook his head.

"But I benefited from it."

He looked at the ground.

"My entire empire existed because people destroyed yours."

Mariana didn't answer.

Because that was the truth.

Then Sofia discovered something else.

A document hidden beneath the floor.

A legal agreement.

Her expression changed.

"Mariana."

"What?"

She handed her the paper.

It was Elena's final inheritance plan.

Two names appeared.

Mariana Elena Escalante

Sofia Elena Laurent

The document stated:

The Escalante legacy shall never belong to one heir alone.

My daughters must stand together.

Only together can they control what I built.

Sofia looked at Mariana.

"So she planned this."

Mariana nodded.

"Our mother knew."

Suddenly...

The building's security system activated.

A voice echoed through the speakers.

"Beautiful."

Everyone froze.

Victor Blackwood.

His voice.

"After all these years..."

"You finally found the truth."

Mariana stepped forward.

"Show yourself."

Victor laughed softly.

"I wanted you to find it."

Sofia looked confused.

"Why?"

Victor answered:

"Because now you understand."

A pause.

"The enemy was never me."

The doors opened.

Victor entered.

But he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was Margaret Whitmore.

Older.

Broken.

But alive.

Andrew stared.

"Mother."

Margaret couldn't look at him.

Mariana's expression hardened.

"You worked with him."

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

"Not anymore."

Victor smiled.

"She always was weak."

Margaret looked at him.

"You're wrong."

For the first time...

Margaret stood against Victor.

"I made one mistake twenty-eight years ago."

She looked at Mariana.

"I won't make another."

Victor smiled.

"You think you can defeat me?"

Mariana looked at Sofia.

Then at Andrew.

Then at Margaret.

A strange alliance.

Broken people united by the truth.

"Yes."

Victor laughed.

"You don't even understand what you're fighting."

Mariana stepped closer.

"Then explain."

Victor looked at her.

And said the one thing nobody expected.

"Your mother didn't die because of a conspiracy."

"She died because she discovered something about you."

Mariana froze.

"About me?"

Victor nodded.

"About your birth."

Silence.

"What are you talking about?"

Victor smiled.

"The DNA report was incomplete."

Everyone stopped.

"The truth about your father..."

"Was never fully revealed."

Mariana felt the world shift again.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

Another lie.

Victor whispered:

"Your mother discovered that one of her daughters was never supposed to inherit the Escalante empire."

A pause.

"Because one of you..."

"Was not an Escalante."

The room went silent.

Mariana looked at Sofia.

Sofia looked back.

Two sisters.

One bloodline.

One final mystery.

And the answer could destroy everything they had just built.

Because after twenty-eight years of searching for the truth...

May you like

They discovered the most dangerous secret was not who betrayed Elena.

It was who Elena's daughters really were.
