CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH ABOUT ELENA

The world had waited twenty-eight years for an answer.
The disappearance of Elena Escalante had become one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the financial world.
Some believed she died in an accident.
Some believed she ran away.
Some believed powerful enemies erased her.
But nobody knew the truth.
Nobody except one woman.
Isabella Blackwood.
The woman standing beside Victor Blackwood on every news channel.
The woman who claimed she knew exactly what happened the night Elena disappeared.
And as Mariana watched her speak...
She felt something she hadn't felt in years.
Fear.
Not because Isabella was dangerous.
Because Isabella looked like someone carrying a truth too heavy to keep.
The broadcast continued.
Hundreds of reporters surrounded Victor Blackwood and Isabella.
Victor looked exactly as he always did.
Calm.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
But Isabella was different.
Her eyes carried something else.
Regret.
The reporter stepped forward.
"Mrs. Blackwood, you said you have information regarding the disappearance of Elena Escalante."
Isabella nodded.
"I do."
The crowd became silent.
"For twenty-eight years, people believed Elena Escalante died in a tragic accident."
She paused.
"That was not the truth."
Mariana's hands tightened.
Daniel looked at her.
"Are you ready for this?"
She didn't answer.
Because she wasn't sure anyone could be ready for something that could change their entire life.
Isabella continued.
"Elena Escalante was not running away."
"She was trying to protect someone."
The reporter asked:
"Who?"
Isabella looked directly into the camera.
"Her daughter."
Mariana stopped breathing.
The world disappeared.
All she heard was her own heartbeat.
Her daughter.
Not Victor's daughter.
Not Rafael's daughter.
Her mother's daughter.
Isabella continued:
"Elena discovered a plan that placed Mariana in danger."
"She discovered powerful people wanted control of her inheritance."
The reporter asked:
"Are you saying Victor Blackwood was responsible?"
The room went quiet.
Everyone expected the answer.
Isabella looked at Victor.
For the first time...
Victor looked uncomfortable.
Then Isabella answered:
"No."
The crowd erupted.
Mariana stared.
No?
Not Victor?
Then who?
Inside Escalante Tower, confusion spread.
Executives watched the broadcast.
Employees whispered.
Everyone expected Victor to be exposed.
Instead...
Another possibility appeared.
Someone else.
Someone closer.
Someone nobody suspected.
Isabella continued.
"Victor made mistakes."
She looked at him.
"Many mistakes."
Victor's expression hardened.
"But he did not cause Elena's disappearance."
The reporter frowned.
"Then who did?"
Isabella took a deep breath.
"The person Elena trusted most."
The entire room froze.
Mariana immediately looked at her father.
Rafael.
Because there was only one person her mother trusted above everyone else.
Her husband.
Rafael watched the broadcast from the Escalante estate.
And Mariana knew.
Before he said anything.
The pain on his face told her.
He knew what was coming.
When the broadcast ended, Mariana returned home immediately.
She found him sitting in his office.
The same office where he had hidden decades of secrets.
"You heard."
Rafael nodded.
"Yes."
"Is it true?"
Silence.
That was the answer she feared.
"Father."
Her voice broke.
"Tell me."
Rafael closed his eyes.
"I didn't kill your mother."
The words came quickly.
But Mariana noticed something.
He didn't say:
"I don't know what happened."
He said:
"I didn't kill her."
Her heart sank.
"What does that mean?"
Rafael stood slowly.
"I need to tell you the whole story."
Twenty-eight years ago...
The night Elena disappeared...
Rafael had received a message.
A warning.
Someone inside Escalante Holdings was betraying him.
The message claimed Elena was involved.
At first, Rafael didn't believe it.
But then he found documents.
Financial transfers.
Secret communications.
Evidence that appeared to prove Elena was working with Victor.
Rafael was devastated.
The woman he loved.
The mother of his child.
His greatest supporter.
He believed she betrayed him.
So he confronted her.
And that was the last night he saw her.
Mariana stared at him.
"You thought Mom betrayed you?"
Rafael looked broken.
"Yes."
"And you confronted her?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
His voice became quiet.
"We argued."
The room felt colder.
"She told me I was wrong."
"She told me someone was framing her."
"But I was angry."
He looked down.
"I didn't listen."
Mariana's eyes filled.
"Then what?"
Rafael swallowed.
"She left."
"And you let her leave?"
The pain in her voice destroyed him.
"I thought she would come back."
A pause.
"I was wrong."
Mariana walked away.
She couldn't breathe.
For years, she believed her mother was taken by a monster.
Now she discovered something worse.
Her mother was hurt by the man she trusted most.
Not because he wanted to harm her.
Because he failed her.
Later that evening, Andrew found Mariana sitting alone outside the estate.
He didn't speak immediately.
He simply sat beside her.
For once, he understood.
Some pain couldn't be fixed.
Only shared.
"Your father?"
She nodded.
"He knew."
Andrew looked down.
"I know what it's like."
She looked at him.
"To discover your whole life was built on a lie."
The words were painful.
Because they both knew.
They were more alike than either wanted to admit.
Then Mariana's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's voice.
"Mariana."
She recognized it.
Isabella.
"How did you get my number?"
"I have always known how to reach you."
Mariana stood.
"Why are you calling me?"
A pause.
"Because the world heard only half the truth today."
Mariana's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
Isabella lowered her voice.
"Victor didn't kill your mother."
"Your father didn't kill your mother."
"Then who?"
Silence.
Then Isabella said:
"Someone who wanted both men destroyed."
Mariana felt cold.
"Who?"
Isabella whispered:
"Your mother's closest friend."
Mariana froze.
"My mother's friend?"
"Yes."
"Someone who was there that night."
"Someone who helped create the lie."
The call became distorted.
Before disconnecting, Isabella said one final thing:
"Mariana..."
"Your mother's death was never about love."
"It was about inheritance."
The next morning, Daniel arrived with urgent news.
"We found the original investigation files."
Mariana looked up.
"Impossible."
"They were hidden."
"Where?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Inside a private archive belonging to..."
He paused.
"Margaret Whitmore."
Mariana's eyes narrowed.
Margaret.
Andrew's mother.
The woman who spent years humiliating her.
The woman who hated her from the moment they met.
Why would Margaret have files about Elena Escalante's disappearance?
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside was an old photograph.
Four people standing together.
Elena Escalante.
Victor Blackwood.
Rafael Escalante.
And...
A young Margaret Whitmore.
Mariana stared.
Her entire body went cold.
Because suddenly she understood.
The Whitmores were not just connected to her downfall.
They were connected to her beginning.
The enemy had not entered her life four years ago.
The enemy had been watching her family for decades.
May you like
And the woman who called her unworthy...
Had known her mother's secret all along.
