CHAPTER 6 — THE HIDDEN ENEMY BEHIND THE WHITMORE EMPIRE

The world believed the Whitmore Empire had fallen.

They were wrong.

An empire does not disappear when the king loses his crown.

Sometimes...

It disappears because someone else has been holding the crown from the shadows all along.

Three days after the courthouse hearing, Mariana Escalante stood inside her father's private archive.

The room was hidden beneath Escalante Tower.

Few people knew it existed.

Not even most executives inside the company had access.

The archive contained decades of financial records.

Every investment.

Every contract.

Every alliance.

Every enemy.

Rafael Escalante had built it because he believed one thing:

"Money can be replaced."

"But information cannot."

Mariana had heard those words since childhood.

At the time, they sounded like another lesson from a powerful businessman.

Now...

They felt like a warning.

Daniel Hayes placed a thick file on the table.

"This was found during the Whitmore audit."

Mariana looked at the folder.

"Another hidden account?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

His expression was serious.

"Something much bigger."

She opened it.

Inside were documents dated fifteen years earlier.

Before she met Andrew.

Before the Whitmore Group became successful.

Before anyone knew the name Andrew Whitmore.

The first page contained a name.

And Mariana froze.

Victor Blackwood.

Her eyes narrowed.

"No."

Daniel watched her carefully.

"You know him?"

Mariana slowly turned the page.

"I know of him."

Everyone in the financial world knew Victor Blackwood.

A billionaire investor.

A man famous for predicting market movements before anyone else.

A man who built his fortune by acquiring failing companies and transforming them into global corporations.

But there was another side to Victor.

A side rarely discussed.

Ruthless.

Cold.

Dangerous.

And years ago...

He had been her father's greatest rival.

"What does he have to do with Whitmore?"

Daniel pointed at the documents.

"Look."

Mariana studied the records.

Then her face changed.

Because hidden behind multiple companies...

Behind anonymous investment funds...

Behind offshore accounts...

Was one name.

Blackwood Capital.

Victor Blackwood had been secretly investing in Whitmore Group.

For years.

Mariana looked up.

"Why?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"That's what we don't know."

Meanwhile, Andrew Whitmore was discovering his own nightmare.

After losing control of his company, he expected betrayal.

He expected investors to abandon him.

He expected enemies to attack.

But he never expected the person who appeared to help him...

Would be the one who had been controlling him.

A private meeting was arranged at an exclusive club outside the city.

Andrew arrived alone.

The man waiting for him sat by the window.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Victor Blackwood.

Andrew stopped.

"You."

Victor smiled.

"Andrew."

Andrew remained standing.

"You were behind the investments."

Victor took a sip of his drink.

"I prefer the term partnership."

"You controlled my company."

"No."

Victor smiled.

"I guided it."

Andrew's anger grew.

"You used me."

Victor looked amused.

"Everyone uses everyone, Andrew."

The sentence was delivered without emotion.

And that terrified Andrew.

Because Victor did not pretend to care.

Not like Brenda.

Not like his mother.

Victor didn't need love.

He only needed control.

"You saved my company."

Victor nodded.

"I did."

"Why?"

A long silence.

Then Victor answered:

"Because your company was useful."

Andrew clenched his fists.

"Useful for what?"

Victor looked out the window.

"For getting close to Escalante Holdings."

Andrew froze.

"What?"

Victor turned back.

"Did you really think your marriage was random?"

The question hit him like a punch.

Andrew stared.

"What are you saying?"

Victor smiled.

"Mariana Escalante."

"Rafael Escalante's only daughter."

"Do you really believe a man like me would ignore that opportunity?"

Andrew stepped back.

"You knew who she was?"

"From the beginning."

The room went silent.

Andrew's stomach turned.

"You knew."

Victor nodded.

"I knew exactly who you married."

Every memory returned.

The first time he met Mariana.

The way she avoided talking about her family.

The way powerful people respected her.

The way she always knew more than she admitted.

Andrew whispered:

"Was I chosen?"

Victor smiled.

"Now you're asking the right question."

That night, Mariana returned home to the Escalante estate.

The place where she grew up.

A place filled with memories.

Her father was waiting.

She placed the documents on the table.

"Victor Blackwood."

Rafael's expression changed instantly.

For the first time in years...

Mariana saw fear in her father's eyes.

Not concern.

Fear.

"You found him."

Mariana looked surprised.

"You knew?"

Rafael remained silent.

"Dad."

He sighed.

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Since before you married Andrew."

The room became still.

Mariana stepped back.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted to protect you."

She shook her head.

"No."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"You wanted to protect me from the truth."

Rafael looked away.

"Victor was dangerous."

"How dangerous?"

A long silence.

Then:

"He destroyed my first company."

Mariana froze.

"What?"

"Before Escalante Holdings became what it is today..."

"Your father lost everything."

Her eyes widened.

Rafael continued.

"Victor used illegal manipulation, stolen information, and personal betrayal."

"He didn't just want my money."

"He wanted my name."

Mariana looked at the documents.

"And Andrew?"

Rafael's expression became painful.

"Andrew was never the target."

A pause.

"He was the door."

The next morning, Victor Blackwood made his first public appearance.

Every major financial channel covered it.

He announced the creation of a new investment group.

And his first acquisition target shocked everyone.

Whitmore Group Assets.

The company that once belonged to Andrew.

The company Mariana had just taken back.

Victor was trying to buy it.

Reporters surrounded him.

"Mr. Blackwood, why Whitmore Group?"

Victor smiled.

"Because every empire has a weakness."

A reporter asked:

"And what is Escalante Holdings' weakness?"

Victor looked directly into the camera.

"Family."

When Mariana saw the interview, she understood.

This was never about Andrew.

It was never about Brenda.

It was never about the Whitmore name.

They were only pieces on a much larger board.

A game that had started years ago.

Before her marriage.

Before her betrayal.

Before she even knew she was playing.

Daniel entered her office.

"We found something else."

Mariana looked up.

"What?"

He placed an old photograph on the desk.

It showed three people.

Her father.

Victor Blackwood.

And...

A young Andrew Whitmore.

Mariana stared.

Her blood turned cold.

Because the photograph was dated fifteen years ago.

Long before she met Andrew.

Long before their love story began.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Mariana..."

"Andrew didn't enter your life by accident."

She couldn't look away.

The man she loved.

The man she married.

The man she thought betrayed her only recently.

May have been connected to her enemy from the very beginning.

That night, Mariana stood alone in her father's office.

The woman who had defeated Andrew Whitmore.

The woman who had exposed Brenda.

The woman who believed she finally understood the truth.

Now realized something terrifying.

She had been fighting the wrong battle.

Andrew wasn't the mastermind.

He was a pawn.

And somewhere in the shadows...

The real enemy had been waiting.

Watching.

Planning.

Patiently.

Until Mariana finally returned to the battlefield.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Hello, Mariana."

Her heart stopped.

Because she recognized it.

Victor Blackwood.

"I've been waiting a long time to meet you."

She remained silent.

Victor continued.

"You took back your empire."

A pause.

"But you never asked yourself..."

"Who built the cage you were trying to escape from?"

The call ended.

Mariana stared at the phone.

For the first time since leaving the Whitmore mansion...

She felt something she had not felt before.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

May you like

Because the greatest enemy she had ever faced...

Had just introduced himself.
