CHAPTER 13 — THE UNCLE WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

For twenty-eight years...

Everyone believed Gabriel Escalante was dead.

His name existed only in old records.

Old photographs.

Old memories.

To Mariana, he was a ghost from a childhood she barely remembered.

Her father's younger brother.

The charming uncle who carried her on his shoulders.

The man who brought her gifts.

The man who disappeared shortly after her mother's death.

Everyone said he was another victim of the tragedy.

Another person destroyed by the events surrounding Elena Escalante.

But now...

The impossible had happened.

Gabriel Escalante was alive.

And he had broken into the family archive.

The security footage played again.

The figure moved through the restricted halls of Escalante Tower.

Older.

Slower.

But unmistakable.

Mariana stared at the screen.

"No."

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Daniel looked at her carefully.

"You know him."

She nodded slowly.

"I knew him when I was a child."

Andrew stood behind her.

"Your uncle?"

Mariana didn't answer.

Because something else bothered her.

Not that Gabriel was alive.

But that he chose to return now.

At the exact moment the truth about Elena was coming out.

At the exact moment the family empire was vulnerable.

Rafael arrived minutes later.

The moment he saw the footage...

Everything changed.

His face became pale.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Mariana noticed immediately.

"You knew."

Rafael looked at her.

"Mariana..."

"You knew he was alive."

Silence.

A painful silence.

The same silence that had followed every hidden truth in her family.

Her expression hardened.

"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."

"Everyone keeps hiding things."

"But nobody asks what those secrets do to me."

Rafael lowered his eyes.

"I thought he was gone forever."

"But you knew."

Rafael didn't answer.

And once again...

His silence betrayed him.

That night, Rafael finally told the truth about his brother.

Gabriel Escalante was not always an enemy.

He was Rafael's closest friend.

His partner.

The two brothers built their first business together.

But they were different.

Rafael believed in creating value.

Gabriel believed in winning.

No matter the cost.

When Rafael met Elena, Gabriel admired her.

Maybe too much.

Because Elena was everything Gabriel wasn't.

Kind.

Honest.

Compassionate.

And that created the first crack between the brothers.

"Your uncle loved your mother."

Mariana looked shocked.

"What?"

Rafael nodded.

"But Elena only loved me."

The words were painful even after decades.

"Gabriel couldn't accept that."

Mariana looked at the old photograph.

The smiling family.

The perfect image.

"It was jealousy?"

Rafael shook his head.

"At first."

"Then it became obsession."

Twenty-eight years earlier...

Gabriel discovered Victor Blackwood's plan against the Escalante family.

But instead of warning Rafael...

He saw an opportunity.

If Rafael lost everything...

If Victor destroyed him...

Gabriel could rebuild the company in his own image.

He believed he deserved what Rafael had.

The respect.

The success.

The family.

Even Elena.

He convinced himself he wasn't stealing.

He was correcting an injustice.

Because in his mind...

Rafael had taken everything that should have belonged to him.

Mariana struggled to process it.

"My own uncle?"

Rafael nodded.

"The night your mother disappeared..."

"Gabriel was there."

The room became silent.

"What?"

Rafael looked devastated.

"I discovered it too late."

"What happened?"

Rafael closed his eyes.

"Your mother was going to reveal everything."

"Victor's crimes."

"Gabriel's betrayal."

"The people working against us."

"But before she could..."

"Someone intercepted her."

Mariana whispered:

"Gabriel."

Rafael nodded.

Meanwhile...

Gabriel Escalante watched the news from a hidden apartment.

The world had forgotten him.

That was exactly what he wanted.

For twenty-eight years, he lived as a shadow.

Watching.

Waiting.

Planning.

On the wall behind him were photographs.

Escalante Holdings.

Mariana.

Rafael.

Victor.

Andrew.

Everyone connected.

Everyone who had taken something from him.

His assistant entered.

"Mr. Escalante."

Gabriel didn't turn.

"Yes?"

"The girl knows."

A smile appeared on his face.

"Good."

"Let her discover the truth."

The assistant hesitated.

"Are you sure?"

Gabriel finally turned.

His eyes were cold.

"Mariana needs to understand something."

"What?"

"She inherited her father's empire."

A pause.

"But she inherited my blood too."

The next morning, Gabriel sent Mariana a message.

One sentence.

Come to the place where your mother took her last breath.

The same location Victor had used.

The same road where Elena disappeared.

Mariana knew it was dangerous.

Daniel warned her.

"It's a trap."

"I know."

Andrew stepped forward.

"Then don't go alone."

She looked at him.

"You don't have to do this."

Andrew shook his head.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I do."

Mariana studied him.

The man who once destroyed her trust.

Now willing to risk himself to protect her.

It didn't erase what happened.

But it mattered.

The old highway was empty.

Cold wind moved across the road.

Mariana stood beneath the same sky where her mother disappeared.

Then a voice came from behind her.

"You look exactly like Elena."

Mariana turned.

Gabriel Escalante stood there.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But alive.

For a moment, she saw the uncle from her childhood.

The man who smiled.

The man who held her hand.

Then she remembered.

The man who betrayed her mother.

"You were alive."

Gabriel smiled.

"Yes."

"Why?"

He looked at the road.

"Because your father needed to believe he lost everything."

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Your father always believed he was the hero."

"But heroes create villains."

She stared at him.

"Did you kill my mother?"

Gabriel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his coat.

And pulled out an old envelope.

Mariana recognized it.

Her mother's handwriting.

Another letter.

"I found this the night Elena disappeared."

Mariana's heart raced.

"Why didn't you give it to my father?"

Gabriel smiled sadly.

"Because your mother wasn't writing to him."

A pause.

"She was writing to you."

Mariana took the letter.

Her hands shook.

"Why now?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"Because Victor is trying to take your empire."

"He thinks he is your father."

"He thinks he owns your future."

A cold smile appeared.

"But he doesn't understand."

Mariana stared.

"Understand what?"

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Elena knew the truth about Victor."

"She knew he was dangerous."

"But she also knew something else."

"What?"

Gabriel whispered:

"Victor was not the only person trying to control you."

Suddenly...

A car engine roared.

Black vehicles appeared on the highway.

Daniel's security team reacted instantly.

But before anyone could move...

A shot echoed through the darkness.

Everyone froze.

Gabriel fell backward.

Mariana screamed.

"Gabriel!"

Blood spread across his shirt.

Andrew rushed forward.

Security surrounded them.

The shooter disappeared into the night.

Mariana knelt beside her uncle.

For all the betrayal...

For all the secrets...

He was still family.

Gabriel grabbed her hand.

His voice was barely audible.

"Mariana..."

"Don't trust..."

He coughed.

"Anyone..."

Her eyes filled.

"Who?"

Gabriel looked toward the darkness.

"The person..."

"Who killed your mother..."

A pause.

"The person..."

"Who has been protecting you your entire life."

His hand went limp.

Mariana froze.

Because the final clue wasn't pointing toward an enemy.

It was pointing toward someone she loved.

May you like

Someone who had always been there.

Someone she never suspected.
