Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Returned

Arthur stared at the photograph for several minutes.

He did not move.

He did not speak.

He simply looked at the face of the woman he had spent years mourning.

His mother.

Eleanor Hale.

Alive.

The world around him became distant.

The voices.

The sounds.

The movement of people outside.

Everything disappeared.

Because for years, Arthur had carried a wound he never allowed himself to heal.

He believed his mother abandoned him.

He believed she chose to leave.

He believed he was not important enough for her to stay.

Now he discovered something far more painful.

She had wanted to stay.

Someone had taken her away.

Marcus placed a hand on the table.

“Arthur.”

Arthur looked up.

“We need to be careful.”

“Why?”

“Because if Eleanor is alive, the people who hid her will know.”

Arthur looked at the photograph again.

“I don’t care.”

Marcus frowned.

“What?”

“I spent years believing she was gone.”

His voice became stronger.

“I’m not losing her again.”

They tracked the location from the photograph.

A small town several hours away.

A quiet neighborhood.

Nothing like the powerful world Arthur lived in.

No security.

No luxury.

Just a simple house with flowers growing near the front door.

Arthur stood outside for almost five minutes.

He was afraid.

Not of danger.

Of disappointment.

What if she did not want to see him?

What if she blamed him?

What if the years apart had changed everything?

Marcus stood beside him.

“You ready?”

Arthur took a deep breath.

“No.”

Marcus looked surprised.

Arthur gave a small smile.

“I don’t think anyone is ready for something like this.”

Then he knocked.

The door opened slowly.

An older woman appeared.

Her hair was silver now.

Her face carried years of pain.

But Arthur knew her instantly.

“Mom…”

The word came out before he could stop it.

Eleanor froze.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Arthur?”

Neither of them moved.

Then Eleanor covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Arthur stepped forward.

And for the first time in years…

He hugged his mother.

The woman he thought he lost.

The woman who had never left.

Inside the house, Eleanor told him everything.

She had not abandoned him.

She had been forced away after discovering the financial crimes inside the Hale family business.

She found evidence that someone was secretly transferring company money.

When she tried to expose it, she was threatened.

“I went to your father.”

Arthur looked down.

“What did he do?”

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“He already knew.”

Arthur felt sick.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

She took a deep breath.

“Your father was not the only person involved.”

Arthur waited.

“There was someone else.”

“Who?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Someone who wanted your life.”

She showed him a box.

Inside were old documents.

Photos.

Letters.

Evidence she had collected over the years.

Arthur opened one file.

The name on the top shocked him.

Daniel Cross.

Arthur froze.

“Daniel?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He was involved from the beginning.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“He was your father’s most trusted adviser.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

Eleanor interrupted gently.

“Arthur.”

Her voice was sad.

“People closest to you are often the ones who know exactly where to hurt you.”

That night, Arthur returned home with Eleanor.

The moment Ethan and Maya saw her, they stopped.

“Dad?”

Arthur smiled.

“This is someone very special.”

Eleanor looked at them.

Her eyes filled with emotion.

“My grandchildren.”

Maya stepped closer.

“Grandma?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

Maya looked confused.

“But you were gone.”

Eleanor knelt.

“I was never gone because I wanted to be.”

The little girl hugged her.

And Eleanor cried.

Because after years of losing everything…

She finally held her family again.

But while the Hale family reunited, someone else was preparing.

Daniel sat in a dark office.

A file lay open in front of him.

Inside was Arthur’s entire history.

Every weakness.

Every decision.

Every mistake.

He received a message.

“Eleanor is back.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then typed:

“Then the final phase begins.”
