Chapter 5 - The First Proof

The first thing Arthur did was remove everyone from the house.
Not permanently.
Not yet.
But he needed space.
He needed clarity.
Most importantly…
He needed to protect Ethan and Maya.
The children stayed with him in the guest room.
Arthur sat between their beds that night.
He did not sleep.
Every sound woke him.
Every movement made him check if they were safe.
Because for years, he had believed providing a home was enough.
Now he understood.
A home without protection was only a building.
The next morning, Arthur hired a private investigator.
Not because he wanted revenge.
Because he needed evidence.
The investigator’s name was Marcus Reed.
A former detective known for finding the truth hidden behind powerful people.
Marcus studied the documents.
“The person who created this plan was patient.”
Arthur looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“This wasn’t an emotional decision.”
Marcus pointed at the files.
“This took years.”
Arthur looked at the custody documents.
“Someone planned to take my children long before the incident.”
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And I think Victoria was only one piece.”
Marcus discovered something unexpected.
The custody agreement was not the only document.
There were bank transfers.
Payments.
Secret accounts.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Not Victoria.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
A woman.
Arthur looked at the name.
“Who is this?”
Marcus answered:
“Evelyn Cross.”
Arthur frowned.
“Daniel’s wife?”
“Yes.”
That made no sense.
Evelyn had always been kind.
Gentle.
Someone Arthur trusted.
Why would she be involved?
Arthur confronted Daniel.
“You lied to me.”
Daniel looked tired.
“I protected you.”
“No.”
Arthur placed the documents on the table.
“You protected yourself.”
Daniel looked at the papers.
Then closed his eyes.
“Evelyn knows more than I do.”
Arthur froze.
“Why?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she was there when your mother disappeared.”
The sentence changed everything.
Arthur grabbed the table.
“My mother didn’t disappear.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“She was taken away.”
Arthur felt sick.
“By who?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“The person who still controls everything.”
That afternoon, Marcus found the first real proof.
A security recording.
Old.
Damaged.
Almost deleted.
But still readable.
The video showed a parking lot seven years earlier.
A woman walking toward a car.
Eleanor.
Then another person appeared.
Victoria.
They spoke.
Then someone else arrived.
Arthur leaned closer.
The third person stepped into view.
His blood turned cold.
Because it was someone impossible.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had comforted him after his mother vanished.
Someone who had cried beside him.
The person who helped him bury the past.
The person in the video was…
Arthur himself.
Arthur stared at the screen.
“No.”
Marcus paused the video.
“I know this is difficult.”
“That’s not possible.”
But the image was clear.
Arthur was there.
At the scene.
On the night his mother disappeared.
And suddenly, the mystery became even darker.
Because maybe the question was not only:
Who betrayed Arthur?
May you like
The question was:
What had Arthur forgotten?
