Chapter 4 - The Man Behind Victoria

Arthur had spent years believing danger came from outside.
From competitors.
From strangers.
From people who wanted something from him.
He never imagined the greatest threat would walk through his front door carrying a familiar face.
The man standing in the hallway was not a stranger.
He was someone Arthur had known for more than a decade.
Someone who had attended family dinners.
Someone who had held Maya as a baby.
Someone who had been trusted inside the Hale family.
His name was Daniel Cross.
Arthur’s closest business adviser.
His former best friend.
The man he had once called family.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at Arthur.
Then at the black folder on the table.
His expression changed.
He knew.
He knew Arthur had found everything.
“Daniel…”
Arthur’s voice was low.
“What are you doing here?”
Daniel forced a smile.
“I heard there was trouble.”
Arthur looked at Victoria.
Then back at him.
“Interesting.”
A pause.
“Because you arrived exactly when Victoria needed help.”
Daniel said nothing.
And that silence confirmed Arthur’s suspicion.
Maya moved closer to Ethan.
The children could feel the tension.
They did not understand the details.
But they understood fear.
Arthur noticed.
He stepped between his children and the two adults.
“Whatever this is, it ends tonight.”
Daniel sighed.
“Arthur, you don’t know what you’re dealing with.”
Arthur looked at him.
“No.”
He held up the folder.
“I finally do.”
Daniel walked slowly into the room.
“You found the documents.”
“Yes.”
“And the letters?”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked disappointed.
Not surprised.
Disappointed.
As if Arthur had failed some kind of test.
“That room should have stayed locked.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew about it.”
Daniel remained silent.
“You knew about my mother.”
Another silence.
Arthur’s voice became colder.
“How long?”
Daniel looked away.
“Years.”
The answer hurt more than Arthur expected.
Because betrayal was always worse when it came from someone close.
Daniel sat down.
“You think Victoria is the villain.”
Arthur did not respond.
“But you don’t understand the entire story.”
Arthur laughed bitterly.
“I found a plan to take my children away.”
Daniel looked at Ethan and Maya.
“I never wanted them hurt.”
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“Then why did you help?”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Because I was trying to stop something worse.”
Victoria suddenly turned.
“Daniel.”
Her voice was sharp.
But he continued.
“No more lies.”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked at Arthur.
“Your father created this situation long before Victoria.”
Arthur froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Daniel nodded.
“He built the system. Victoria only continued it.”
Arthur stared.
“My father died years ago.”
“His plans didn’t.”
Daniel explained everything.
Years earlier, Arthur’s father had created secret agreements.
Control systems.
Financial protections.
Ways to keep the Hale family name powerful.
He believed emotions made people weak.
He believed family members were assets.
Not people.
Eleanor Hale discovered the truth.
She wanted to expose him.
So she became a threat.
Arthur’s father used Daniel to monitor the situation.
Then Victoria entered the picture.
She saw an opportunity.
She wanted Arthur.
She wanted the Hale name.
And she was willing to do whatever it took.
Arthur looked at Victoria.
“Is this true?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you.”
Arthur shook his head.
“That’s not an answer.”
She whispered:
“Yes.”
The confession was quiet.
But devastating.
“I knew about your father’s plans.”
Arthur stepped back.
“You knew.”
“I thought I could control it.”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“You became part of it.”
Suddenly, Maya spoke.
A small voice.
“Daddy.”
Everyone turned.
She pointed toward the black folder.
“There was another paper.”
Arthur walked toward her.
“What paper?”
Maya looked nervous.
“The one Victoria dropped before.”
Arthur opened the folder again.
Hidden between the documents was a photograph.
A photograph of a woman.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Arthur stopped breathing.
Because he knew that face.
His mother.
Eleanor.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten message:
“Arthur, I never abandoned you.”
Arthur’s entire world shifted.
His mother was alive.
And someone had spent years making him believe she was gone.
But before he could ask another question, Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Arthur noticed.
“Who is it?”
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“No one.”
Arthur stepped closer.
“Show me.”
Daniel hesitated.
Then turned the screen.
One message.
Only six words.
“He knows. Activate the final plan.”
Arthur looked at Daniel.
“Who sent that?”
May you like
Daniel did not answer.
Because the person behind the message was someone Arthur never expected.
