Chapter 13 - The Final Enemy

Arthur knew the battle had changed.
For weeks, he believed Daniel was the final enemy.
He was wrong.
Daniel was only part of the machine.
Someone else had been moving pieces from the shadows.
Someone who understood the Hale family better than anyone.
The former lawyer.
Richard Voss.
Marcus investigated immediately.
The results were disturbing.
Richard Voss had handled every major legal document in the Hale family for twenty years.
Every inheritance.
Every contract.
Every agreement.
Including the documents that separated Arthur from his mother.
Arthur felt sick.
“How many people were involved?”
Marcus answered honestly.
“We don’t know yet.”
Richard finally contacted Arthur.
He did not run.
He did not hide.
He invited Arthur to meet.
When Arthur arrived, Richard was waiting.
Older.
Calmer.
Almost peaceful.
“You look like your father.”
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“I’m not him.”
Richard smiled.
“That’s exactly what he would say.”
Arthur sat down.
“Why?”
Richard looked out the window.
“Because your father built an empire.”
A pause.
“But he never understood power.”
Arthur frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Power is not money.”
Richard looked at him.
“Power is controlling the truth.”
Richard admitted everything.
He helped Arthur’s father hide information.
He helped Daniel create his identity inside the family.
He helped Victoria gain influence.
But he claimed he did it for one reason.
“To prevent the Hale family from destroying itself.”
Arthur stared.
“You destroyed it.”
Richard smiled sadly.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Your family destroyed itself long before I arrived.”
Then Richard revealed the final secret.
The night Eleanor disappeared.
Arthur was not an innocent bystander.
He had confronted his father that night.
He had discovered the truth.
And he had chosen to protect the family name.
Arthur’s face went pale.
“No.”
Richard placed a document on the table.
A statement signed by Arthur.
A confession.
Arthur looked at the signature.
His signature.
Again.
The same handwriting.
The same impossible memory.
Richard continued.
“You were not forced to forget.”
Arthur stared.
“What?”
“You chose to forget.”
The room became silent.
“You were so ashamed of what happened that your mind buried it.”
Arthur felt his chest tighten.
All the missing memories.
The injury.
The confusion.
The lost night.
They were not stolen.
They were hidden.
By him.
Arthur left the meeting broken.
Not because Richard had defeated him.
Because he finally understood.
The biggest secret was not what others had done to him.
It was what he had allowed himself to become.
That night, Arthur sat with Ethan and Maya.
He told them nothing about the pain.
Nothing about the darkness.
He simply held them.
Because he finally understood the lesson his entire life had been teaching him.
A family was not protected by hiding the truth.
A family was protected by facing it.
But before Arthur could begin healing, one final message arrived.
From Daniel.
Only three words:
“Come alone, brother.”
Attached was a location.
The place where Eleanor disappeared.
The place where Arthur lost his memory.
The place where everything began.
And this time…
Arthur was going back.
May you like
Not to uncover the truth.
But to finally face it.
