Chapter 14 - The Night Everything Began
Arthur arrived at the abandoned warehouse just before midnight.
The same location.
The same place where his life had changed seven years earlier.
The place connected to his mother’s disappearance.
The place connected to the memory he could never recover.
The cold wind moved through the broken windows.
The building looked empty.
But Arthur knew better.
Secrets had a way of waiting.
“Arthur.”
The voice came from the darkness.
Daniel stepped forward.
Older.
Tired.
Different.
Not the confident man who had controlled situations from behind the scenes.
Just a man carrying years of anger.
Arthur looked at him.
“Why did you bring me here?”
Daniel looked around.
“Because this is where everything started.”
A pause.
“This is where I lost everything.”
Arthur remained silent.
“Do you know what it feels like?”
Daniel continued.
“To grow up knowing you have a brother who has everything you never had?”
Arthur shook his head.
“You had a choice.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.”
He stepped closer.
“But nobody understands.”
Daniel explained the truth.
Years earlier, before Arthur knew anything, Daniel discovered his identity.
He found documents proving he was Arthur’s half-brother.
He confronted Arthur’s father.
But instead of accepting him, his father offered him money.
A payment.
A way to disappear.
Daniel refused.
He wanted recognition.
He wanted the Hale name.
He wanted to belong.
But Arthur’s father chose Arthur.
Every time.
And that created a wound Daniel never healed.
“I didn’t want to destroy you.”
Arthur looked at him.
“No?”
Daniel looked down.
“I wanted you to understand.”
Arthur shook his head.
“You hurt my children.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.”
For a moment, there was silence.
Then Arthur noticed something.
A small box on the floor.
“What is that?”
Daniel looked at it.
“The final truth.”
Inside the box was an old recording device.
Daniel pressed play.
A voice filled the warehouse.
Arthur’s younger voice.
His own.
The memory he lost.
The night everything happened.
At first, the recording was unclear.
Then the voices became recognizable.
Arthur.
His father.
Eleanor.
Daniel.
Everyone was there.
Arthur listened.
And slowly, the truth returned.
That night, Arthur had discovered everything.
He found proof of his father’s crimes.
He found out Daniel was his brother.
He found out Victoria had been involved.
He confronted them.
But he did not choose revenge.
He chose silence.
Because his father convinced him that exposing the truth would destroy everyone.

The children.
Arthur had believed him.
That was his mistake.
The recording continued.
Arthur’s younger voice said:
“If I tell the truth, everyone loses.”
Eleanor answered:
“No, Arthur.”
Her voice was emotional.
“If you hide the truth, everyone loses.”
A long silence.
Then Arthur heard himself say:
“I can’t do this.”
The recording ended.
Arthur stood frozen.
Because he finally remembered.
He had not been powerless.
He had been afraid.
He had allowed fear to control him.
And that was the truth he had been running from.
Daniel watched him.
“I wanted you to remember.”
Arthur looked at him.
“Why?”
Daniel answered honestly.
“Because I wanted you to feel what I felt.”
Arthur nodded slowly.
“You wanted me to suffer.”
“Yes.”
“But did it fix anything?”
Daniel looked away.
No answer.
Because it didn’t.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the warehouse.
Both men turned.
Richard Voss entered.
Arthur immediately understood.
This was not only about Daniel.
Richard smiled.
“Finally.”
Arthur looked at him.
“You.”
Richard nodded.
“The family reunion.”
Daniel frowned.
“You said you were helping me.”
Richard smiled.
“I was helping myself.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?”
Richard looked at both men.
“You were never the heir.”
A pause.
“You were never the winner.”
Daniel stepped back.
“You used me.”
Richard replied calmly:
“Yes.”
Arthur realized the truth.
Daniel had been manipulated too.
Just like Victoria.
Just like everyone else.
Richard had created conflict inside the Hale family because divided people were easier to control.
Richard revealed his final plan.
The Hale company was about to collapse.
When it did, he would purchase the remaining assets.
The empire Arthur’s family built would belong to him.
Not Arthur.
Not Daniel.
Nobody.
But Richard made one mistake.
He talked too much.
Because Arthur was recording everything.
A small device hidden inside his jacket.
Richard realized too late.
