Chapter 12 - The Secret Maya Carried

Arthur could not sleep.

The message remained on his phone.

“Ask your father why he saved Maya… but abandoned you.”

The words haunted him.

Because they revealed something Arthur had never considered.

His father had not simply controlled people.

He had made choices.

Some people were protected.

Others were sacrificed.

And Arthur needed to know why.

The next morning, Arthur, Eleanor, and Marcus gathered in the old study.

The room had once belonged to Arthur’s father.

A place where decisions were made.

A place where secrets were created.

Now it was where those secrets would finally be destroyed.

Marcus placed several files on the table.

“We traced the person who sent the message.”

Arthur looked up.

“Who?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Someone connected to the Hale family.”

Arthur already knew what that meant.

“Another secret relative?”

“No.”

Marcus opened the file.

“Someone who worked for your father.”

Inside was a photograph.

A woman.

Older.

Serious.

Arthur recognized her immediately.

“Margaret.”

Eleanor looked surprised.

“You know her?”

“She was my father’s assistant.”

Marcus nodded.

“She was also the person who managed the private accounts.”

Arthur stared.

“So she knows everything.”

“Yes.”

Arthur contacted Margaret.

She agreed to meet.

But only once.

Only privately.

The meeting took place at an old café outside the city.

Margaret arrived carrying a small suitcase.

She looked tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a burden.

Arthur sat across from her.

“Tell me the truth.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Your father loved you.”

Arthur frowned.

“That’s not what I expected.”

She sighed.

“Your father was a terrible man in many ways.”

A pause.

“But when it came to you…”

She looked down.

“He was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Of losing you.”

Arthur felt confused.

“Then why did he hurt me?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because he believed protecting you meant controlling everything around you.”

Margaret opened the suitcase.

Inside was another file.

The final file.

The one Arthur’s father never wanted anyone to find.

She pushed it across the table.

“Your father discovered Daniel’s plan.”

Arthur froze.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Years before Daniel acted.”

Arthur’s hands tightened.

“Then why did he do nothing?”

Margaret looked at him.

“Because he made a terrible decision.”

“What decision?”

“To use Daniel against himself.”

Margaret explained.

Arthur’s father discovered that Daniel wanted the Hale empire.

He knew Daniel was dangerous.

But instead of confronting him, he tried to manipulate him.

He created a hidden inheritance.

A false promise.

He made Daniel believe that one day he would receive what he wanted.

But the plan failed.

Because Daniel became more patient.

More dangerous.

And more desperate.

Arthur opened the final file.

Inside was a letter from his father.

A letter written shortly before his death.

The first sentence broke Arthur.

“Arthur, if you hate me after reading this, I understand.”

He continued.

“I spent my life trying to protect the Hale name. I forgot that names do not matter without the people who carry them.”

Arthur paused.

For the first time, he saw regret from his father.

Real regret.

“Daniel is my greatest failure.”

“Victoria is my second.”

“But my greatest fear was what would happen to Maya.”

Arthur looked confused.

Why Maya?

The answer came on the next page.

The document revealed something shocking.

Maya was not chosen because she was special.

She was chosen because she was innocent.

Arthur’s father had realized the children were the only people untouched by the family’s corruption.

He created the trust account to protect them.

Not because he was kind.

Because he finally understood what he had destroyed.

When Arthur returned home, Maya ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

He picked her up.

Holding her tightly.

For a moment, he forgot about the secrets.

The betrayal.

The past.

He was simply a father holding his daughter.

But then he noticed something.

Maya was holding a small envelope.

“What is that?”

She looked at him.

“It was under my pillow.”

Arthur froze.

“Who gave it to you?”

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

The envelope had one word written on it.

ARTHUR.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Of Daniel.

Standing beside someone Arthur thought was gone forever.
