Chapter 19 — The Choice of the Last Heir

Nobody spoke.
The old man's words hung over the archive.
If you destroy it, your son dies with it.
Arthur looked at Ethan.
The boy stood beside Elena, terrified.
“Dad?”
Arthur walked toward him.
He crouched.
“Listen to me.”
Ethan looked into his eyes.
“Whatever happens, you stay with Mom.”
“Why?”
“Because I need you to be brave.”
Ethan swallowed.
“Are you going somewhere?”
Arthur forced a smile.
“No.”
He pulled Ethan into his arms.
“I'm staying.”
Rebecca watched them.
Tears ran down her face.
The old man spoke through the speakers.
“You see?”
Arthur turned.
“You built all of this.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated families.”
“Yes.”
“You stole children.”
“Yes.”
“You created the Circle.”
“Yes.”
“And you expect me to become its leader?”
“No.”
The old man smiled.
“I expect you to become what the Circle was created to protect.”
Arthur frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The old man answered:
“The Vance bloodline was never created to control the world.”
“Then why?”
“To prevent anyone else from doing it.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“That doesn't make sense.”
The old man laughed.
“You believe the Circle was a criminal organization.”
“Wasn't it?”
“No.”
He looked at Arthur.
“It was a prison.”
“For whom?”
“For people like me.”
Arthur stared.
The old man continued.
“The wealthiest families in the world created the Circle to control governments, markets, and generations.”
He paused.
“Your family infiltrated it.”
Arthur looked at Edward's photograph.
“Edward?”
“Yes.”
“Alexander?”
“My son.”
“Rebecca?”
“She infiltrated the Circle too.”
Arthur looked at his mother.
“And me?”
The old man smiled.
“You were the contingency.”
Arthur's face hardened.
“The contingency for what?”
“If the Circle ever escaped control, the final heir would have the authority to shut it down.”
Arthur stared at Ethan.
“But you said Ethan is the key.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Ethan carries the complete succession code.”
Jonathan suddenly understood.
“Arthur has the bloodline authorization.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Anna has the genetic counter-signature.”
“And Ethan?”
“He has both.”
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“He can shut down the entire system.”
The old man nodded.
“But only if you choose to let him.”
Arthur frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“The final protocol requires a living heir to voluntarily reject the inheritance.”
Arthur stared.
“Then Ethan has to choose?”
“No.”
The old man's eyes became cold.
“You do.”
Arthur froze.
“You're the one who must authorize it.”
“What happens if I do?”
“The Vance empire disappears.”
“And Ethan?”
“He survives.”
Arthur exhaled.
“And if I don't?”
“The Circle becomes his.”
Arthur looked at Alexander.
“And you?”
Alexander answered for his father.
“I become his guardian.”
Arthur's face hardened.
“You expect me to hand my son to you?”
“No.”
Alexander shook his head.
“I expect you to kill the system.”
Arthur stared at him.
“You've been fighting your own father.”
“For thirty years.”
“Why?”
Alexander looked toward the screen.
“Because he stopped being human a long time ago.”
The old man smiled.
“Careful.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“No.”
His voice shook with anger.
“I'm done being afraid of you.”
The old man laughed.
“You think courage makes you free?”
“No.”
Alexander looked at Arthur.
“Choice does.”
Arthur studied him.
For the first time, Alexander didn't look like a monster.
He looked exhausted.
Broken.
A man who had spent his entire life inside someone else's plan.
Arthur looked at Rebecca.
“Did you know?”
She nodded.
“About the final protocol?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I couldn't.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
Every secret had led here.
The trust.
The forged documents.
The surveillance.
The dead brother.
The hidden mother.
Anna.
Ethan.
All of it.
A system designed decades before Ethan was even born.
The old man spoke again.
“Arthur.”
Arthur looked up.
“Your choice.”
A screen appeared.
Two buttons.
ACCEPT THE SUCCESSION
DESTROY THE SUCCESSION
Arthur stared.
Jonathan stepped beside him.
“If you destroy it, the entire Vance network collapses.”
“Good.”
“Thousands of employees could lose everything.”
Arthur nodded.
“I know.”
“Charities.”
“I know.”
“Businesses.”
“I know.”
“People who had nothing to do with the Circle.”
Arthur looked at him.
“Then we'll protect them.”
Jonathan stared.
“How?”
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“We rebuild without the system.”
The old man laughed.
“You cannot rebuild what you don't understand.”
Arthur stepped toward the console.
“Then I'll learn.”
The old man's smile faded.
“Once you press that button, there is no return.”
Arthur placed his hand above the screen.
Rebecca whispered,
“Arthur…”
He looked at her.
“You spent your life protecting me.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Now let me protect my son.”
Arthur pressed:
DESTROY THE SUCCESSION.
The entire archive went black.
For three seconds—
nothing happened.
Then every screen exploded with red warnings.
SUCCESSION REJECTION ACCEPTED.
A-01 AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED.
A-02 COUNTER-SIGNATURE CONFIRMED.
A-03 RELEASE INITIATED.
Ethan suddenly gasped.
Arthur rushed toward him.
“What happened?”
Ethan looked up.
“I feel…”
He touched his chest.
“Different.”
A soft tone echoed.
Then the system announced:
VANCE SUCCESSION TERMINATED.
The old man's face appeared one final time.
He was no longer smiling.
“You've made a terrible mistake.”
Arthur stared at him.
“No.”
He looked at Ethan.
“I made the right one.”
The screen went dark.
Then—
every light in the archive turned white.
The glass cases opened.
Files dropped onto the floor.
Hard drives shut down.
Servers powered off.
Across the city, the dormant Vance network began collapsing.
But one final message appeared.
Not from the old man.
Not from Alexander.
Not from Edward.
From the system itself.
SUCCESSION DESTROYED.
Arthur exhaled.
It was over.
Or so he thought.
Anna suddenly screamed.
Arthur turned.
She was staring at a monitor that had remained active.
“What?”
She pointed.
“There is one system still running.”
Jonathan rushed over.
“What system?”
Anna's face went pale.
“The original.”
Arthur stepped closer.
A single file opened.
PROJECT H-17
Then another line appeared.
SUBJECT STATUS: ACTIVE
Arthur frowned.
“H-17?”
Rebecca suddenly covered her mouth.
“No…”
Arthur looked at her.
“What?”
She whispered:
“That was never your designation.”
Arthur's heart stopped.
“Then whose was it?”
Rebecca stared at Ethan.
Arthur slowly turned.
Ethan was standing perfectly still.
His eyes fixed on the screen.
Then he whispered:
“Mine.”
The monitor displayed one final message.
PROJECT H-17 WAS NEVER DESIGNED TO CREATE AN HEIR.
A pause.
Then:
IT WAS DESIGNED TO CREATE THE PERSON WHO WOULD CONTROL THE HEIR.
Arthur's face went cold.
Ethan looked up at him.
“Dad…”
Arthur grabbed his son's shoulders.
“What?”
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“I remember now.”
“Remember what?”
“The woman who took me.”
Arthur froze.
“What woman?”
Ethan whispered:
“She looked like Grandma.”
Rebecca went pale.
“There was only one person who looked like me.”
Arthur stared at her.
Rebecca's voice trembled.
“Then she wasn't me.”
The archive door slowly opened.
A woman stood in the darkness.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same scar.
But older than Rebecca.
Older than Anna.
And wearing the silver pendant Arthur had believed belonged to his mother.
She smiled at Ethan.
“Hello, H-17.”
Arthur stepped in front of his son.
May you like
The woman whispered:
“It's time to finish what we started.”
