Chapter 17 — The Woman Waiting at Vance Tower

Rain hammered the windows of Vance Tower.

The building had been evacuated.

At least officially.

Arthur stood across the street, staring at the black glass skyscraper.

Every floor was dark.

Except one.

The highest floor.

A single light.

Daniel stood beside him.

“You're sure?”

Arthur nodded.

“My mother is there.”

Jonathan checked the encrypted files.

“According to the system, the backup protocol is running from the executive level.”

Elena held Ethan's hand.

“What happens if we shut it down?”

Jonathan looked at Arthur.

“We may permanently destroy the succession system.”

“Then that's what we'll do.”

A-02 stepped out of the vehicle.

She had changed clothes and wrapped a bandage around her arm.

Arthur looked at her.

“You don't have to come.”

She stared at the tower.

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because Alexander created me.”

She looked at Arthur.

“And I want to know why.”

Daniel approached.

“There is something you should know.”

A-02 turned.

“What?”

“Edward never called you A-02.”

She frowned.

“What did he call me?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Anna.”

She froze.

“Anna?”

Daniel nodded.

“That was the name he gave you.”

A-02 looked at Arthur.

“Do you remember?”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel answered.

“You were a baby when Edward found the first prototype.”

Anna's eyes widened.

“You knew me?”

“I saw you once.”

“When?”

“The night Edward took Arthur.”

Arthur turned.

“What?”

Daniel sighed.

“You weren't the only child he rescued.”

Anna stared at him.

“What happened to the others?”

Daniel looked away.

“They didn't survive.”

Silence.

Anna whispered,

“And me?”

“You disappeared.”

“Who found me?”

Daniel looked toward the tower.

“Alexander.”

Anna's expression hardened.

“Of course.”

Arthur placed a hand on her shoulder.

“We'll find out everything tonight.”

They entered Vance Tower through the underground parking structure.

The elevators were disabled.

So they took the stairs.

Twenty floors.

Forty.

Sixty.

The higher they climbed, the quieter it became.

At floor eighty—

the lights turned on.

All by themselves.

A voice echoed through the stairwell.

“Welcome home, Arthur.”

Arthur stopped.

Alexander.

“Where's my mother?”

“Waiting.”

“Let her go.”

“You don't get to make demands.”

Arthur continued climbing.

“What do you want?”

“The same thing I've always wanted.”

“The company?”

“No.”

“The trust?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

A pause.

“You.”

Arthur stopped.

Daniel looked at him.

Arthur's voice became cold.

“You already have my DNA.”

Alexander laughed.

“I don't want your blood.”

“What, then?”

“I want your choice.”

The line went silent.

Arthur stared at the darkness above.

“What does that mean?”

No answer.

They reached the executive floor.

The doors opened.

The entire floor was empty.

Except for one chair.

And a woman sitting in it.

Rebecca.

Arthur froze.

“Mom.”

Rebecca looked up.

She smiled.

“You came.”

Arthur ran toward her.

He stopped just before reaching her.

Something was wrong.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

Rebecca looked at the floor.

“Because I made a deal.”

“With Alexander?”

“Yes.”

Arthur's face hardened.

“What deal?”

“To keep Ethan alive.”

Elena stepped forward.

“What did you promise?”

Rebecca looked at her.

“My life.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

Rebecca smiled sadly.

“Arthur…”

“No.”

He moved toward her.

“We're leaving.”

She shook her head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because the Circle has one final rule.”

Arthur stared.

“What rule?”

Rebecca whispered:

“Every founder must sacrifice the person they love most.”

Arthur's blood ran cold.

Rebecca looked directly at him.

“They chose you.”

Silence.

Daniel stepped forward.

“That's impossible.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

She looked toward the glass wall.

“It's already begun.”

The lights in the city below suddenly went out.

One district.

Then another.

Then another.

The entire skyline went black.

Jonathan looked at his phone.

“Power grid failure.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Not a failure.”

Arthur looked at her.

“A takeover.”

She nodded.

“Halcyon Circle has activated every dormant Vance asset.”

Jonathan's face went pale.

“They're taking control of the company.”

“No.”

Rebecca looked at Arthur.

“They're taking control of the country.”

Everyone froze.

Arthur stared.

“What?”

Rebecca stood.

“The Vance empire was never just a corporation.”

She walked toward the windows.

“For thirty years, Edward built companies that appeared independent.”

She pointed at the city.

“Banks.”

Another building.

“Energy.”

Another.

“Transportation.”

Another.

“Communications.”

Arthur stared at the skyline.

“They were all connected.”

“Yes.”

Jonathan whispered,

“And the Circle controls them.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Tonight, they intend to merge everything.”

Arthur looked at Ethan.

“Why?”

Rebecca turned.

“Because once the network is activated, whoever controls Ethan's succession code controls the entire system.”

Arthur's expression hardened.

“Then we destroy the code.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“Because the code isn't stored in a computer.”

Arthur frowned.

“Where is it?”

Rebecca looked at Ethan.

“In him.”

Arthur's face went blank.

“No.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Ethan is the code.”

Elena pulled Ethan closer.

“No.”

Rebecca's voice softened.

“That's why they wanted him from the beginning.”

Arthur stared at his son.

All the fear.

All the surveillance.

All the trust documents.

All the people who had tried to reach him.

It had never been about money.

It had never been about the company.

It had always been Ethan.

Then a door opened behind them.

Alexander walked in.

No guards.

No weapon.

Just a small black box in his hand.

Arthur stepped in front of Ethan.

Alexander looked at Rebecca.

“You kept your promise.”

Rebecca nodded.

Alexander then looked at Arthur.

“And now you have a choice.”

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

“What choice?”

Alexander placed the black box on the table.

“You can save your son.”

He opened it.

Inside was a biometric device.

“Or you can save the world.”

Arthur stared.

Alexander smiled.

“Only one is possible.”

The room fell silent.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Dad…”

Arthur turned.

The boy was staring at the black box.

And tears filled his eyes.

“I remember that.”

Arthur froze.

“Remember what?”

Ethan pointed at the device.

“The man in the gray coat.”

Arthur's blood ran cold.

Ethan whispered:

“He used that on me before.”

Alexander's expression changed.

Arthur looked at his son.

“Where?”

Ethan pointed toward the floor.

“Downstairs.”

Jonathan immediately checked the building plans.

“There is no basement below this level.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Yes, there is.”

He looked at Arthur.

“It's where they took me before.”

Arthur stared at the floor.

A faint mechanical clicking began beneath them.

Then a hidden elevator door opened.

A cold blue light rose from the darkness.

Rebecca whispered:

“The original archive.”

Arthur looked down.

The deepest secret of the Vance family was waiting beneath Vance Tower.

And this time—

Ethan knew the way.
