Chapter 12 — The Daughter Hidden in Plain Sight

The screen went dark.
Arthur stood motionless.
The words were still burned into his mind.
ELENA VANCE — BIOLOGICAL MATCH: 99.98%
He looked at his wife.
Elena looked back at him.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Jonathan whispered,
“That percentage…”
Arthur turned.
“What about it?”
“It isn't a normal family match.”
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
Jonathan swallowed.
“A parent-child relationship is usually above ninety-nine percent.”
Arthur stared at him.
“So?”
“So is a sibling relationship.”
Arthur's expression changed.
Jonathan continued.
“The system isn't saying Elena is your biological daughter.”
“Then what is it saying?”
“It says she matches someone in the database.”
Arthur looked at the screen again.
The words had disappeared.
Only darkness remained.
“Whose DNA?”
Jonathan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“There is another possibility.”
Arthur turned.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“The test may not have been comparing her to you.”
Arthur frowned.
“Then who?”
Daniel pointed toward the old photograph.
“Your biological mother.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“My mother?”
Daniel nodded.
“If the database contains her DNA, the system could have identified Elena as a direct descendant.”
Arthur stared at Elena.
“But her mother was supposed to be dead.”
“Exactly.”
Elena's hands began trembling.
“My mother…”
Her voice broke.
“She could have been alive all this time.”
Daniel didn't answer.
Then the speakers crackled.
A woman's voice filled the room.
“Not just alive.”
Elena turned toward the ceiling.
“Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“I am watching you.”
Arthur immediately scanned the room.
“From where?”
The woman laughed softly.
“You're standing inside my house.”
Everyone froze.
Arthur looked around the archive.
“This is your house?”
“Yes.”
Elena stepped toward the speaker.
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather built it for me.”
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't understand.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
Arthur stepped closer to the microphone.
“Tell us the truth.”
A pause.
Then the woman's voice became colder.
“The truth is that your entire family has been living inside a lie.”
Arthur's jaw tightened.
“Start with Elena.”
Silence.
Then:
“Elena was never supposed to marry you.”
Arthur looked at his wife.
“What?”
Elena's face went pale.
Her mother continued.
“She was supposed to stay away from the Vance family.”
Arthur's voice hardened.
“Why?”
“Because she is the last living person who can expose them.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Expose who?”
“The founders.”
Jonathan frowned.
“The Halcyon Circle?”
“Yes.”
“But they're dead.”
“No.”
The woman paused.
“Some are.”
Arthur felt a chill.
“And the others?”
“They changed their names.”
A long silence followed.
Then the speakers clicked.
“Arthur, look behind you.”
Arthur turned.
One of the archive cabinets had opened.
Inside was a stack of old folders.
On top was a photograph.
Arthur picked it up.
His blood ran cold.
The photograph showed a wedding.
Edward Vance.
A younger Gerald Whitmore.
Elena's mother.
And another woman.
Arthur stared at the fourth person.
He knew her.
He had seen her many times.
At charity dinners.
Corporate events.
Family gatherings.
A woman everyone respected.
A woman who had attended Arthur and Elena's wedding.
A woman who had held Ethan as a baby.
Arthur whispered,
“No.”
Elena looked at the photograph.
“Who is she?”
Arthur couldn't answer.
Daniel took the photograph.
His face turned white.
“That's impossible.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Who?”
Daniel finally spoke.
“Victoria Ashford.”
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“Who is that?”
“Gerald's wife.”
The room went silent.
Elena looked at him.
“Gerald is married?”
Daniel nodded.
“He has been for thirty years.”
Arthur stared at the photograph.
Victoria stood beside Elena's mother.
Both women were smiling.
But something was written on the back.
FOUNDING WIVES — HALCYON CIRCLE
Arthur's stomach turned.
“Elena's mother was one of them?”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She infiltrated them.”
Arthur looked at him.
“Why?”
“To destroy them from inside.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“Then why did she disappear?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she discovered something.”
“What?”
“That the Circle had a successor program.”
Arthur immediately thought of Ethan.
“The children.”
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“My mother knew about Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Daniel looked away.
“Before he was born.”
Arthur felt anger rising.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Her mother.”
Elena's breathing became uneven.
“What did she know?”
“That Ethan's bloodline would activate the original Vance agreement.”
Arthur stepped closer.
“Again with this agreement.”
Daniel nodded.
“Because that's what all of this is about.”
“What exactly does it activate?”
Daniel reached into the cabinet.
He pulled out another file.
The cover was stamped:
ORIGINAL SUCCESSION PROTOCOL
Arthur opened it.
Inside was a list of names.
Edward Vance.
Alexander Vance.
Thomas Hayes.
Then—
Arthur Vance.
And finally—
Ethan Vance.
Arthur stared.
“Why am I on this?”
Daniel pointed to the first page.
“Because the protocol recognizes bloodline inheritance.”
Arthur frowned.
“I was adopted.”
“Yes.”
“But my biological father was Thomas Hayes.”
“Yes.”
“Then why am I listed as a Vance?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because Thomas Hayes wasn't just Elena's uncle.”
Arthur froze.
“What?”
“He was Edward's son.”
Silence.
Arthur's mind raced.
“So Thomas was my father's brother?”
Daniel nodded.
“Half-brother.”
Arthur looked at the file.
“Then my biological father was part of the Vance family.”
“Yes.”
“And that means…”
“You are still a Vance by blood.”
Arthur slowly understood.
The adoption had hidden him.
But it hadn't changed the bloodline.
Elena stepped closer.
“What about me?”
Daniel didn't answer.
She looked at the file.
Her name wasn't there.
“Why isn't my name listed?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because you aren't part of the succession.”
Elena exhaled.
“Then why are they watching me?”
“Because your mother was.”
Elena shook her head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It will.”
Daniel opened another folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Elena took it.
She read the name.
Then stopped.
Her fingers went numb.
Arthur looked over her shoulder.
The document listed Elena's birth mother.
But the name wasn't the woman she had always believed was her mother.
It was someone else.
Someone whose name Arthur recognized.
MARA HAYES.
Elena's face went completely white.
“No.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Who is Mara Hayes?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Daniel answered quietly.
“She was your mother's sister.”
Elena stared at him.
“My aunt?”
“Yes.”
“But Gerald said Mara Hayes raised him.”
Daniel nodded.
“She did.”
Arthur looked between them.
“Then what does she have to do with Elena?”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Everything.”
A loud alarm suddenly sounded.
The archive lights flashed red.
Jonathan looked at the security panel.
“Someone's accessing the building.”
Arthur grabbed his phone.
“Who?”
Jonathan checked the system.
“Unknown.”
“How many?”
“One.”
Daniel reached for his weapon.
“Where?”
Jonathan looked at the screen.
“Basement entrance.”
Arthur frowned.
“We're already in the basement.”
Jonathan's face changed.
“No.”
He pointed to another indicator.
“Someone is coming from below us.”
Arthur stared.
“Below?”
“There shouldn't be another level.”
Daniel's expression became grim.
“There is.”
Arthur looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because Father showed it to me once.”
“When?”
“Before the accident.”
Arthur felt another piece of the past fall into place.
“What is down there?”
Daniel hesitated.
“The original archive.”
Jonathan frowned.
“This isn't the original archive?”
“No.”
“Then what is this?”
“A copy.”
Arthur stared at the walls.
“All of this…”
“Was designed to distract anyone who found it.”
A metallic boom shook the floor.
Everyone froze.
Another boom.
Closer.
Elena grabbed Arthur's arm.
“Someone is coming.”
Arthur looked at Daniel.
“Can we get out?”
Daniel shook his head.
“The elevator is locked.”
Jonathan checked his phone.
“No signal.”
Arthur looked toward the archive door.
“Then we fight our way out.”
Daniel nodded.
But before they could move—
the floor beneath them vibrated.
A hidden panel opened.
A staircase appeared.
Descending into darkness.
Arthur looked down.
No lights.
No sound.
Then a woman's voice came from below.
“Arthur.”
He froze.
It wasn't Elena's mother.
It wasn't Maria.
It wasn't Gerald.
It was a voice he knew.
A voice from his childhood.
A voice he had heard every night when he was a boy.
His mother's voice.
Arthur whispered,
“Mom?”
The voice answered:
“Come downstairs.”
Elena looked at him.
“Arthur…”
He couldn't move.
Daniel stared into the darkness.
His face had lost all color.
Arthur noticed.
“You know that voice.”
Daniel nodded.
“I do.”
“Who is it?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Our mother.”
Arthur stared.
“But our mother died before I was born.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
The voice came again.
“Arthur.”
Then another voice followed.
A man's voice.
Older.
Colder.
Familiar.
“Daniel.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“Father.”
Edward's voice echoed from below.
“You have all been looking in the wrong place.”
Arthur stepped toward the staircase.
“Dad!”
No answer.
Then the lights beneath them switched on.
One by one.
Revealing a long underground corridor.
At the far end stood two figures.
An elderly woman.
And an elderly man.
Arthur's heart stopped.
He knew the woman.
She looked exactly like the woman in the photographs.
Elena's mother.
But the man beside her—
Arthur had never seen him in person.
Yet he knew his face.
It was Edward Vance.
Alive.
Older.
Leaning on a cane.
Watching his sons from the darkness.
Daniel whispered,
“Father…”
Edward lifted his eyes.
“Come closer.”
Arthur didn't move.
“You're alive.”
Edward nodded.
“For twenty-two years.”
“Why?”
Edward looked at Elena.
Then at Ethan's photograph on the file.
“Because I was waiting for the right heir.”
Arthur's expression hardened.
“You abandoned us.”
“I protected you.”
“You let me think you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“From Alexander?”
Edward shook his head.
“No.”
Arthur felt a chill.
“Then from who?”
Edward looked toward the elderly woman beside him.
Then he said:
“From the woman who gave birth to you.”
Arthur froze.
Elena's mother covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at Edward in disbelief.
And Arthur finally understood why everyone had been afraid to tell him the truth.
Because the woman standing beside Edward—
the woman who had just been revealed as Elena's mother—
was not Arthur's biological mother.
Edward slowly pointed toward the darkness behind Arthur.
“Your real mother is already inside this building.”
Arthur turned.
The archive door was open.
A woman stood there.
May you like
She was holding Ethan's brass key.
And she looked exactly like Arthur.
