Chapter 15 — The Child They Built the Empire Around

The explosion sent another tremor through the underground passage.
Arthur pulled Ethan against his chest.
“Everyone move!”
A-02 pointed toward a narrow tunnel.
“This way.”
Daniel followed.
Jonathan grabbed the remaining files.
Elena stayed beside Ethan.
They ran.
Behind them, alarms screamed through the underground complex.
Red lights flashed.
Then a mechanical voice echoed from hidden speakers.
“SUCCESSION PROTOCOL INITIATED.”
Arthur stopped.
A-02 grabbed his shoulder.
“Keep moving.”
“What did it just say?”
“Exactly what I warned you about.”
“Explain.”
“There isn't time.”
“I need answers.”
“You'll get them.”
“When?”
“When Ethan is safe.”
They reached a steel door.
A-02 pressed her hand against it.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Jonathan looked at the panel.
“It's locked.”
A-02 cursed.
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“Ethan.”
The boy understood.
He placed his palm against the scanner.
The door immediately opened.
Everyone stared.
A-02 whispered,
“He shouldn't be able to do that.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because this door recognizes only bloodline descendants.”
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“Then why does it recognize Ethan?”
A-02 looked at him.
“Because he's the first successful combination.”
Jonathan frowned.
“Combination of what?”
A-02 opened the door.
Inside was a laboratory.
Unlike the dusty archive, this room looked untouched.
Clean glass walls.
Medical equipment.
Old monitors.
And one enormous screen.
On it were three profiles.
A-01 — ARTHUR VANCE
A-02 — UNKNOWN
A-03 — ETHAN VANCE
Arthur stared.
“No.”
A-02 nodded.
“Yes.”
Jonathan walked toward the screen.
“A-03 isn't a person.”
“What?”
“He's listed as a genetic continuation.”
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?”
A-02 answered.
“They weren't trying to find an heir.”
Arthur's face tightened.
“What were they trying to create?”
“A bloodline they could control.”
Silence.
Arthur looked at the profiles.
“So Ethan…”
“Was never supposed to exist naturally.”
Elena stepped forward.
“That's impossible.”
A-02 looked at her.
“Is it?”
Elena's face went pale.
“What are you saying?”
“Your pregnancy was monitored from the beginning.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“Mara reported every medical appointment.”
“No.”
“Gerald received the records.”
Elena backed away.
“No…”
“And Alexander knew the exact date Ethan would be born.”
Arthur turned toward Elena.
She looked devastated.
“I didn't know.”
Arthur immediately took her hand.
“I believe you.”
A-02 watched them.
Then she pointed at another screen.
“Look.”
A video began playing.
A young Elena entered a hospital room.
She was pregnant.
A doctor spoke to her.
“We'll need another blood sample.”
Elena nodded.
The video continued.
Then the screen changed.
Alexander appeared.
Arthur's fists clenched.
Alexander looked directly into the camera.
“Proceed.”
The video ended.
Elena covered her mouth.
“They were watching me.”
Arthur pulled her close.
“They've been watching all of us.”
A-02 shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed at Ethan.
“They've been watching him.”
Arthur turned.
“What makes him so important?”
A-02 walked toward the central computer.
“Because Ethan carries something neither you nor I have.”
She entered a code.
A hidden file opened.
ORIGINAL SUCCESSION PROTOCOL
Arthur read the first line.
The Vance empire shall remain dormant until the birth of the third generation heir.
His eyes widened.
“Third generation.”
A-02 nodded.
“Edward was the first generation.”
“Alexander and I…”
“Second.”
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“And he's the third.”
“Yes.”
Jonathan read further.
“Upon activation, all dormant Vance assets transfer to the third-generation heir.”
Arthur frowned.
“That doesn't explain why Alexander wants him.”
A-02 looked at him.
“Because the heir doesn't just inherit the assets.”
She opened another file.
A map appeared.
Thousands of companies.
Banks.
Properties.
Investment funds.
Private foundations.
Media companies.
Energy firms.
Technology companies.
All connected to one central account.
The Vance empire.
At the center was Ethan's name.
Arthur stared.
“He owns all of this?”
“Not yet.”
“What happens when he turns eighteen?”
A-02's voice dropped.
“The system activates automatically.”
Arthur's face hardened.
“And Alexander?”
“He controls the mechanism.”
Jonathan suddenly understood.
“So the trust isn't protecting Ethan.”
“No.”
A-02 looked at him.
“It is waiting for him.”
Arthur stepped toward the screen.
“Then we destroy it.”
A-02 shook her head.
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust is protected by international law and a succession clause Edward created decades ago.”
Jonathan looked stunned.
“Edward created this?”
“Yes.”
Arthur stared at the screen.
“Why would my father build something like this?”
A-02's expression softened.
“Because he knew the Circle would eventually come for Ethan.”
Arthur shook his head.
“He could have told me.”
“He tried.”
Arthur looked at her.
“What?”
A-02 opened another file.
A recording appeared.
Edward.
Older.
Exhausted.
His eyes were filled with regret.
“Arthur, if you're seeing this, then the Circle has activated Ethan's succession file.”
Arthur stared at the screen.
Edward continued.
“I need you to understand something.”
The recording paused.
Then resumed.
“I never created the trust to make Ethan rich.”
Arthur leaned closer.
“I created it because Ethan is the only person who can destroy the Circle.”
Arthur's eyes widened.
Jonathan whispered,
“How?”
Edward continued.
“The Circle has spent generations building power around the Vance bloodline.”
He took a breath.
“But they made one mistake.”
“What mistake?” Arthur whispered.
Edward answered from the recording.
“They believed the heir would obey them.”
A faint smile appeared.
“He won't.”
The screen changed.
Ethan's genetic profile appeared.
Then a second profile.
Arthur's.
Then a third.
A-02's.
Three lines connected.
A-01 + A-02 = ORIGINAL LINE
A-01 + ELENA = A-03
Arthur stared.
Then noticed something.
A red warning appeared beneath Ethan's profile.
UNSTABLE ACTIVATION RISK
Jonathan stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
A-02 looked frightened.
“It means someone has already tried to activate him.”
Arthur turned.
“Who?”
The laboratory doors suddenly locked.
Every screen went black.
Then Alexander's voice came through the speakers.
“You finally found the truth.”
Arthur grabbed Ethan.
“Alexander!”
A slow laugh echoed through the room.
“You've spent your entire life believing Edward saved you.”
Arthur shouted,
“He did.”
“No.”
The voice became colder.
“He stole you.”
Arthur froze.
“What?”
Alexander continued.
“Your father didn't rescue you from the Circle.”
“He rescued you from me.”
A-02 stepped toward the speaker.
“Alexander, stop.”
He laughed.
“You still think you were his sister?”
A-02 froze.
“What did you say?”
Alexander's voice lowered.
“You were never Arthur's twin.”
A-02's face drained of color.
Arthur looked at her.
“What is he talking about?”
Alexander answered:
“She was created from Arthur.”
Silence.
A-02 staggered backward.
“No.”
“She wasn't born.”
“No.”
“She was made.”
Arthur stared at the woman who looked exactly like him.
Alexander continued.
“And that's why she was never meant to survive.”
A-02 whispered,
“Why?”
The speakers crackled.
Then Alexander said the words that changed everything.
“Because you were the prototype.”
The lights suddenly returned.
The laboratory door opened.
Alexander stood on the other side.
Behind him were armed men.
But Alexander wasn't looking at Arthur.
He was looking at Ethan.
And smiling.
“Hello, grandson.”
Arthur stepped in front of his son.
“You will never touch him.”
Alexander's smile widened.
“Oh, Arthur.”
He raised a small black device.
“You still don't understand.”
He pressed a button.
Ethan suddenly grabbed his chest.
His eyes widened.
“Dad…”
Arthur caught him.
“Ethan!”
The boy collapsed into his arms.
Alexander calmly watched.
“The succession protocol has already begun.”
May you like
And on every screen in the laboratory, one message appeared:
A-03 ACTIVATION: 01:00
