Chapter 11 — The Heir Who Had Been Erased

Arthur couldn't move.

The photograph remained frozen across hundreds of screens.

A little boy stood between Alexander Vance and Elena's mother.

Dark hair.

Familiar eyes.

The same small birthmark beneath the left ear.

Arthur knew that face.

He had seen it every morning in the mirror for most of his life.

But there was something wrong.

The boy in the photograph was four years old.

And the date was thirty-two years ago.

Arthur was supposed to have been born twenty-eight years ago.

He looked at Daniel.

“That's not me.”

Daniel didn't answer.

“Daniel.”

His brother's eyes were fixed on the screen.

“That is you.”

“No.”

Arthur shook his head.

“I'm twenty-eight.”

Daniel slowly turned toward him.

“You were told you were twenty-eight.”

Arthur's stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Before Daniel could answer, Elena spoke.

“My mother.”

Everyone looked at her.

“She was holding the child.”

Arthur turned back to the photograph.

Elena stepped closer.

“That means she knew you.”

Daniel nodded.

“She did.”

Arthur stared at him.

“How?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she was there when you were born.”

The room went silent.

Arthur's voice became almost inaudible.

“My mother?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Then who?”

Daniel pointed at the photograph.

“Her.”

Arthur stared.

“Elena's mother?”

“Yes.”

Arthur laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the truth had become too absurd to process.

“My mother was dead before I was born.”

Daniel said nothing.

Arthur turned toward him.

“That's what Dad told me.”

“Yes.”

“That's what the hospital records said.”

“Yes.”

“That's what everyone said.”

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

“Because the records were changed.”

Arthur's face hardened.

“By whom?”

“Edward.”

The word hit like a bullet.

Arthur stepped backward.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

“He changed your birth records.”

“Why?”

“To hide you.”

“From Alexander?”

Daniel shook his head.

“From the entire Halcyon Circle.”

Jonathan moved closer.

“Wait.”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“If Arthur was four years old thirty-two years ago, the dates don't match.”

Daniel looked at him.

“They don't.”

Jonathan frowned.

“Then that isn't Arthur.”

Arthur's heart stopped.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“That isn't Arthur.”

Arthur exhaled.

“Then who is he?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“I don't know.”

Jonathan zoomed in on the image.

The little boy turned slightly toward the camera.

The birthmark was visible.

But so was something else.

A thin scar above the eyebrow.

Arthur touched his own forehead.

He had never had a scar there.

Daniel noticed.

“So you see it.”

Arthur nodded.

“That isn't me.”

Elena stared at the photograph.

“Then why does he look exactly like you?”

Nobody answered.

A new file appeared on the screens.

SUBJECT A-01

Then another.

SUBJECT A-02

Then another.

SUBJECT A-03

Hundreds of files appeared.

Arthur looked around.

“What is this?”

Jonathan's face drained of color.

“Genetic profiles.”

Daniel stared at the screens.

“Edward was tracking bloodlines.”

Arthur frowned.

“Why?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because Alexander wasn't trying to steal the Vance fortune.”

Arthur looked at him.

“He was trying to replace the Vance bloodline.”

The lights flickered.

A voice came through the speakers.

Not Edward's.

A woman's.

“Correct.”

Elena froze.

She knew the voice.

“Mom?”

The speakers crackled.

Then the woman's voice returned.

“Elena.”

She stepped toward the center of the room.

“Where are you?”

“I am closer than you think.”

“Why did you lie to me?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“For twenty-two years.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

The woman's voice trembled.

“Because the last time I told the truth, they killed everyone around me.”

Elena's breathing became uneven.

“Who are they?”

The answer came softly.

“The Vance family.”

Arthur looked at the speaker.

“What?”

Elena turned toward him.

Her mother's voice continued.

“Not your father.”

A pause.

“His father.”

Arthur felt cold.

“Edward?”

“No.”

The voice lowered.

“Edward's father.”

Daniel stepped back.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

Arthur stared at him.

“He died before I was born.”

“That's what the family records say.”

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

“What really happened?”

The woman answered:

“He founded the first version of the Halcyon Circle.”

Silence.

Jonathan whispered,

“So the organization is older than Edward.”

“Much older.”

Arthur looked at the files.

“And Alexander?”

“He inherited it.”

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“Then why did Father fight him?”

“Because Edward discovered what Alexander was doing.”

“What was he doing?”

The answer came slowly.

“Creating heirs.”

Arthur stared.

“Creating?”

“Children with carefully selected bloodlines.”

Elena's face went pale.

“Why?”

“To guarantee control.”

Arthur looked at the photograph of the little boy.

“Who is that?”

The woman answered:

“Your father's first attempt.”

Arthur felt his stomach turn.

“Attempt at what?”

“To create the perfect successor.”

Daniel stepped toward the speaker.

“That's impossible.”

“It happened.”

“How?”

“Through genetic selection.”

Jonathan looked horrified.

“You're saying they experimented on children?”

“No.”

The woman corrected him.

“They experimented on families.”

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“What does that have to do with Ethan?”

The speakers went silent.

Elena whispered,

“Mom?”

No answer.

Arthur's voice rose.

“What does Ethan have to do with this?”

Still nothing.

Then the screen changed.

A new photograph appeared.

Ethan.

Taken at school.

Then another.

Ethan at the Vance mansion.

Another.

Ethan sleeping.

Another.

Ethan walking beside Arthur.

Arthur's blood turned cold.

“They've been watching him.”

Daniel nodded.

“For years.”

Arthur stared at the screens.

“How long?”

A number appeared.

10 YEARS, 4 MONTHS, 17 DAYS.

Arthur's face went blank.

“That is Ethan's entire life.”

“Yes.”

The woman's voice returned.

“Your son was never chosen because of the inheritance.”

Arthur looked at the screen.

“Then why?”

“Because of his blood.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Arthur whispered,

“What blood?”

The answer was almost inaudible.

“Yours.”

Arthur turned toward Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“It means they believe you're the key.”

“The key to what?”

“The original Vance agreement.”

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Edward created the trust because he knew the Halcyon Circle would come after Arthur.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Why would they care about me?”

“Because you're not Edward's biological son.”

Arthur froze.

Elena stared at Daniel.

“What?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Arthur was adopted.”

The archive seemed to disappear around him.

Arthur stared at his brother.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That's impossible.”

“Your birth certificate was replaced.”

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“My father raised me.”

“Yes.”

“He loved me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide this?”

“Because your biological parents were targets.”

“Who were they?”

Daniel hesitated.

Arthur stepped toward him.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at Elena.

Then at the photograph.

“Your biological father was Alexander's greatest enemy.”

Arthur's voice dropped.

“Who?”

Daniel finally answered.

“Thomas Hayes.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“My mother's brother.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your uncle.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“My mother had a brother?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared.”

“When?”

“Thirty-two years ago.”

Arthur looked at the photograph.

The little boy.

Alexander.

Elena's mother.

And a child who looked like him.

Suddenly everything seemed connected.

The bloodline.

The trust.

The photograph.

The hidden records.

Ethan.

Arthur whispered,

“I'm Thomas Hayes's son.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Arthur stepped back.

“My whole life…”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Was built on a secret.”

A loud metallic sound came from the archive door.

Everyone turned.

The lock began to disengage.

Jonathan grabbed the nearest metal bar.

Daniel raised his weapon.

Arthur pulled Elena behind him.

The door opened slowly.

No one entered.

Instead, a small black box slid across the floor.

It stopped at Arthur's feet.

Arthur looked down.

There was a handwritten label.

FOR MY SON.

Arthur crouched.

He recognized the handwriting immediately.

Edward.

He opened the box.

Inside was a cassette recorder.

An old photograph.

And a key.

The photograph showed Edward holding a newborn baby.

Arthur stared.

His hands began shaking.

On the back:

ARTHUR — DAY ONE.

He turned the photograph over.

There was another sentence.

I DIDN'T STEAL YOU FROM YOUR FAMILY. I SAVED YOU FROM THEM.

Arthur pressed the cassette recorder.

Edward's voice filled the room.

“My son…”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“If you are hearing this, then the truth has finally reached you.”

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand one thing before you judge me.”

A pause.

“I never lied because I didn't love you.”

Arthur's eyes filled.

“I lied because I did.”

The recording crackled.

“Your biological father, Thomas Hayes, discovered the Halcyon Circle's true purpose.”

Arthur looked at Elena.

“Thomas was trying to destroy it.”

Edward continued.

“Alexander killed him.”

Elena's face crumpled.

“My uncle…”

Edward's voice became quieter.

“Your mother survived.”

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“She gave birth to you.”

A long pause.

“But Alexander wanted you.”

Arthur's breathing stopped.

“He believed your bloodline could give him legal control of the original Vance assets.”

The recorder clicked.

“That's why I took you.”

Arthur whispered,

“You stole me.”

Edward answered through the recording.

“Yes.”

Arthur looked down.

“I became your father.”

The voice cracked.

“And I never regretted it.”

A long silence followed.

Then Edward said something that changed everything.

“But there is one thing I never told you.”

Arthur stared at the recorder.

“Your mother wasn't the only person who survived.”

The tape stopped.

Arthur pressed play.

Nothing.

He tried again.

Dead.

Then the screens suddenly went black.

A single red light appeared above the archive door.

LOCKDOWN INITIATED.

Jonathan looked at the control panel.

“Someone has taken control of the building.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

Arthur looked at Elena.

“What does this mean?”

Elena's face was frozen.

Then her mother's voice came through the speakers one final time.

“Arthur…”

He looked up.

“Your biological mother is not me.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“What?”

The woman continued:

“And if you want to know who she is…”

The archive doors slammed shut.

“…look at the woman standing beside you.”

Arthur slowly turned toward Elena.

She was staring at him in horror.

Because on the nearest screen—

a new file had appeared.

ELENA VANCE — BIOLOGICAL MATCH: 99.98%

Arthur's heart stopped.

And beneath it appeared another line:

MOTHER: CLASSIFIED.

Then every screen displayed one final message.

THE TRUTH ABOUT ELENA BEGINS WITH HER BIRTH.
