Chapter 14 — The Mother Before the Mother

Arthur stared at the tiny photograph.
His fingers trembled.
Mara Hayes stood behind Rebecca.
Younger.
Much younger.
But unmistakably her.
And the words beneath the image remained burned into his mind.
SHE WAS YOUR FIRST MOTHER.
Arthur looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel didn't answer.
He was staring at the photograph as though he'd seen a ghost.
“Daniel?”
“I don't know.”
Arthur's eyes hardened.
“You're lying.”
“I swear I'm not.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Let me see it.”
Arthur handed him the pendant.
Jonathan examined the photograph beneath the small glass cover.
“This isn't ordinary paper.”
“What do you mean?”
“It looks like archival film.”
He turned it toward the emergency light.
“There are microscopic markings.”
Arthur frowned.
“Can you read them?”
Jonathan pulled out his phone and enlarged the image.
A string of numbers appeared along the edge.
H-17 / M-01 / TRANSFER 1988
Rebecca's voice suddenly echoed through the communication speaker.
“Arthur.”
He froze.
“Mom?”
“Listen carefully.”
Arthur looked around.
The underground corridor was dark and narrow.
“Where are you?”
“Still in the archive.”
“Alexander is there?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Arthur clenched his jaw.
“Get out.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to delay him.”
Arthur looked at Ethan.
Then back at the speaker.
“Tell me about Mara.”
Silence.
“Mom?”
Rebecca finally answered.
“Mara wasn't your mother.”
Arthur exhaled.
“Then what does the photograph mean?”
“She was the first person assigned to raise you.”
Assigned.
The word hit him strangely.
“Assigned?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
“Halcyon Circle.”
Arthur's blood ran cold.
Rebecca continued.
“When you were born, they didn't call you Arthur.”
“What did they call me?”
“H-17.”
Ethan looked at his father.
“Dad?”
Arthur pulled him closer.
Rebecca's voice continued.
“You were part of a succession program.”
Jonathan's face hardened.
“The program we found in B-17.”
“Yes.”
“What was its purpose?”
“To identify children who could legally and genetically control the Vance assets.”
Arthur stared at the corridor walls.
“So I was raised as an experiment?”
“No.”
Rebecca's voice cracked.
“You were raised as a weapon.”
Arthur went silent.
Daniel looked away.
Arthur slowly asked,
“Against whom?”
Rebecca answered,
“Against the people who controlled the Circle.”
Jonathan frowned.
“Alexander?”
“No.”
Again that word.
No.
Always no.
Arthur was beginning to hate it.
“Then who?”
Rebecca whispered:
“The person Alexander fears.”
A sudden metallic crash echoed through the speaker.
Arthur jumped.
“Mom?”
No answer.
“Mom!”
Static.
Then—
a man's voice.
Alexander.
“You should have listened to her.”
Arthur's face went cold.
“You're going to pay for this.”
Alexander laughed softly.
“You still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
“Your mother was never the prisoner.”
Arthur froze.
“What?”
“She was the bait.”
The transmission ended.
Daniel immediately grabbed Arthur's arm.
“We have to move.”
“Not without her.”
“If we go back, Alexander gets all of us.”
Arthur pulled away.
“She's my mother.”
“And Ethan is your son!”
Arthur stopped.
Daniel pointed at Ethan.
“That's exactly what they want.”
Arthur looked at his son.
The boy was frightened but silent.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Dad…”
Arthur crouched.
“What?”
“I know where the door is.”
Everyone stared at him.
“What door?”
“The one Grandma told me about.”
Arthur's heart stopped.
“What did she tell you?”
Ethan pointed down the corridor.
“She said if the lights turn red, I have to find the door with three lines.”
Jonathan looked at the walls.
The emergency lights were red.
Daniel moved forward.
“One…”
He checked the first door.
Nothing.
“Two…”
Nothing.
“Three.”
A small steel panel appeared beneath a layer of dust.
Jonathan touched it.
A fingerprint scanner lit up.
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“Try your hand.”
Ethan hesitated.
Then placed his palm against the scanner.
ACCESS GRANTED.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
No weapons.
No money.
No computers.
Only photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Arthur walked slowly inside.
Photographs covered every wall.
His childhood.
His first birthday.
His first day at school.
His first broken arm.
His wedding.
Ethan's birth.
Ethan's first steps.
Every moment of his life.
Someone had been watching.
For decades.
Arthur's stomach twisted.
“This is sick.”
Jonathan picked up a folder.
“This isn't surveillance.”
“What is it?”
“Documentation.”
Arthur turned.
“Documentation of what?”
Jonathan opened the folder.
The first page contained a single sentence.
SUBJECT A-01 SUCCESSFULLY TRANSFERRED TO VANCE PROTECTION PROGRAM.
Arthur stared.
“A-01.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What about A-02?”
Jonathan turned the page.
There was no name.
Only a photograph.
A little girl.
Dark hair.
Dark eyes.
And the same scar beneath the chin.
Arthur's face went pale.
“She looks like me.”
Daniel whispered,
“She is your sister.”
Arthur looked at him.
“My what?”
Before Daniel could answer, the lights flickered.
Then Ethan screamed.
Arthur spun around.
A red laser dot appeared on the wall beside Ethan's head.
“DOWN!”
Arthur tackled Ethan.
A gunshot exploded through the corridor.
The glass behind them shattered.
Daniel pulled Elena behind a concrete pillar.
Jonathan dropped to the floor.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Arthur looked toward the doorway.
Someone stood at the far end.
A woman.
Holding a rifle.
She stepped into the light.
Arthur recognized her face.
It was the woman from the photograph.
The little girl had grown up.
She looked exactly like him.
But she wasn't Rebecca.
She wasn't Mara.
She was someone else.
She lowered the rifle.
“Arthur.”
He stared.
“Who are you?”
The woman looked at Ethan.
Then back at him.
“I am A-02.”
Arthur's blood ran cold.
“And you,” she said, “are A-01.”
She smiled sadly.
“Your twin.”
Then the entire building shook.
A deep explosion thundered above them.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Daniel looked upward.
“Alexander found us.”
The woman grabbed Arthur's arm.
“Then we have less than five minutes.”
“To do what?”
“To stop him from reaching Ethan.”
Arthur looked at his son.
Then at the woman who shared his face.
“What happens if he does?”
Her expression became deadly serious.
“He activates the succession protocol.”
“And?”
She whispered:
“Ethan becomes the legal owner of everything.”
Arthur frowned.
“That sounds like what we've been trying to protect.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
She looked directly at Ethan.
“If Alexander activates it…”
A second explosion rocked the building.
May you like
“…Ethan won't be the owner.”
“He'll be the key.”
