CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET CALLED PROJECT HAVEN

The words refused to leave Harrison's mind.

Project Haven.

He had spent twenty-two years uncovering hidden trusts, fraudulent corporations, and billion-dollar conspiracies. Criminals always left a trail.

But Project Haven was different.

It was as if someone had erased its existence from history.

No permits.

No contracts.

No board resolutions.

No emails.

Nothing.

Which meant someone with extraordinary authority had made sure it disappeared.

And Harrison intended to find out why.

At seven the next morning, Sarah Mitchell entered Harrison's office carrying two cups of black coffee.

"I searched every corporate database."

Harrison looked up.

"And?"

"Nothing."

She placed a thin folder on his desk.

"This is all I found."

He opened it.

Inside was a single property tax receipt.

An abandoned textile mill outside the small town of Millbrook, Pennsylvania.

Owner:

Haven Development LLC

The company had been dissolved six years earlier.

"No financial activity?" Harrison asked.

Sarah shook her head.

"Officially, no."

"But the property taxes were paid every year."

"By whom?"

"Cashier's checks."

"No sender."

Harrison smiled faintly.

"Someone wants that building to stay forgotten."

Sarah nodded.

"I already sent an investigator."

"When?"

"Last night."

Nearly two hours later, Harrison's phone rang.

Private Investigator Daniel Ross sounded unusually tense.

"I've been inside the old mill."

"What did you find?"

"It isn't abandoned."

Harrison sat upright.

"What do you mean?"

"There are fresh tire tracks."

"New security cameras."

"And armed guards."

Silence.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Whatever Project Haven is..."

"...someone is still protecting it."

Meanwhile, Khloe took her first steps since the surgery.

A physical therapist walked beside her as she slowly crossed the hospital room.

Every movement hurt.

But every step reminded her she was still alive.

The therapist smiled.

"You're making excellent progress."

Khloe looked toward the nursery.

"I have someone waiting for me."

"That's powerful motivation."

A soft knock interrupted them.

Harrison entered carrying a small pink blanket.

"I thought Evelyn might need this."

Khloe smiled.

"You bought it?"

He looked almost embarrassed.

"I had help."

She laughed quietly.

"You've never bought baby clothes in your life."

"I also discovered there are forty-three different kinds of baby bottles."

Khloe laughed harder than she had in weeks.

For a brief moment, neither of them thought about Richard.

Or court.

Or betrayal.

They were simply brother and sister again.

Then Harrison handed her another envelope.

"I wish this visit were only about blankets."

Her smile faded.

"What is it?"

"Evidence."

She hesitated before opening it.

Inside were enlarged photographs of offshore accounts.

Wire transfers.

Luxury purchases.

One photograph stopped her breathing.

Richard and Vanessa stood on a beach in Greece.

The timestamp caught her attention.

She checked the date again.

"No..."

Harrison remained silent.

Khloe's hands began to shake.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

She stared at the photograph through tears.

"I was in the hospital."

The date matched exactly.

It had been the week of her second miscarriage.

While she lay recovering from surgery...

Richard had told her he was attending an emergency business conference.

Instead...

He had been vacationing with Vanessa.

Khloe slowly lowered the photograph.

For the first time since the courthouse attack...

She stopped crying.

The tears simply wouldn't come anymore.

Something inside her had changed.

"I don't love him anymore."

Harrison looked at his sister carefully.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"I finally buried the man I thought he was."

Across the city, Richard arrived at the District Attorney's Office after receiving an official subpoena.

His attorney accompanied him.

Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Lawson entered the interview room carrying several files.

"Mr. Harrington."

"I'm here voluntarily."

"That will be noted."

She opened the first folder.

"Did you authorize thirty-eight million dollars in transfers to offshore entities?"

"My accountants handled routine transactions."

"Please answer yes or no."

Richard sighed.

"Yes."

Rebecca opened another file.

"Did you disclose those transfers to your board?"

"No."

"To your investors?"

"No."

"To your wife?"

Richard remained silent.

Rebecca closed the folder.

"The Commonwealth is considering additional charges beyond financial fraud."

His attorney leaned forward.

"On what basis?"

Rebecca's voice remained steady.

"Conspiracy."

Richard frowned.

"Conspiracy to commit what?"

She looked directly into his eyes.

"We're still determining that."

For the first time during the interview, genuine fear appeared on Richard's face.

That evening, Vanessa met secretly with a man in an underground parking garage.

He wore a gray suit and kept his baseball cap pulled low.

"You shouldn't have contacted me," he said.

"I had no choice."

"They're investigating everything."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"If they find the warehouse, we're finished."

The man looked around cautiously.

"They won't."

"You promised all the records were destroyed."

"They were."

"What about the backup?"

He hesitated.

Vanessa immediately noticed.

"There is a backup."

"It wasn't supposed to matter."

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"The person who created it disappeared years ago."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You never told Richard?"

"No."

Before either of them noticed, a dark SUV rolled quietly out of the shadows.

Inside, Daniel Ross raised a camera.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Every meeting.

Every face.

Every license plate.

Captured.

Just before midnight, Daniel arrived at Harrison's office.

He placed several photographs on the desk.

"I followed Vanessa."

Harrison examined each image carefully.

"Who's the man?"

Daniel slid over another sheet.

"I ran facial recognition."

The file read:

Ethan Mercer

Former Chief Financial Officer.

Resigned six years earlier.

Official reason:

Personal health issues.

Daniel shook his head.

"That was a lie."

"He disappeared the same week Project Haven was officially shut down."

Harrison's eyes narrowed.

"Where is he now?"

"No one knows."

Daniel pointed to the final photograph.

"But someone else might."

"What do you mean?"

Daniel enlarged one image on the screen.

In the reflection of a nearby car window, barely visible in the background, stood an elderly man watching Vanessa and Ethan from across the parking garage.

His face was partially hidden.

But Harrison recognized him instantly.

Thomas Gallagher.

The elderly courthouse janitor.

The same witness who had overheard Vanessa threaten Khloe.

Why was he following Ethan Mercer?

More importantly...

How did a courthouse janitor know one of Richard Harrington's former executives?

Harrison leaned back slowly.

"This was never just about an affair."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

"I think we've only uncovered the first layer."

Outside, thunder rolled across the Philadelphia skyline.

Somewhere in the darkness, a secret buried for six years was beginning to surface.

And when it did...

May you like

It wouldn't only destroy Richard Harrington.

It would expose a conspiracy far bigger than anyone had imagined.
