CHAPTER 13 — VAULT 13

The smoke lingered in the tunnel long after the gunfire stopped.
Detective Laura Simmons lowered her weapon and scanned the darkness.
"Clear!"
Her officers moved cautiously between the rows of steel cabinets.
Three masked guards had been arrested.
Two others lay wounded.
The rest had disappeared with the Founder.
Daniel Ross emerged from behind a concrete pillar.
"They vanished."
Laura looked around.
"There's only one entrance."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"There are tunnels beneath the tunnels."
Edward Harrington slowly pushed himself to his feet.
His breathing had become noticeably heavier.
The stress—and the cancer—were taking their toll.
"They planned every escape route years ago."
Harrison stood silently, staring at the brass key resting in his palm.
VAULT 13 — FINAL TRUTH
Laura approached him.
"What is that?"
"A key."
"To what?"
"I don't know."
Edward answered instead.
"I do."
Everyone turned toward him.
"Vault 13 was never listed on the official blueprints."
"It wasn't part of Project Haven."
"It was built beneath it."
Daniel frowned.
"Who had access?"
Edward smiled sadly.
"Only three people."
"The Founder."
"Myself."
"And James Cole."
Harrison's grip tightened around the key.
"My father."
Edward nodded.
"He designed the security system himself."
Hours later, a federal forensic team secured the underground archive.
Every cabinet was photographed.
Every hard drive cataloged.
Nothing would leave the site until a federal judge authorized it.
Laura walked beside Harrison.
"We've contacted the Attorney General."
"They'll want everything."
Harrison looked at the endless rows of evidence.
"They can't have everything."
Laura stopped walking.
"What?"
"My father wrote something before he died."
"He believed some of these files would destroy innocent lives."
Laura nodded slowly.
"You agree with him."
"I do."
She studied Harrison carefully.
"You realize people will accuse you of hiding evidence."
"I know."
"But justice isn't measured by how many lives we ruin."
"It's measured by how many we save."
Laura didn't answer.
For the first time, she understood why Harrison Cole had become the most respected trial lawyer in Pennsylvania.
He wasn't obsessed with winning.
He was obsessed with doing what was right.
Across the city, Richard Harrington drove to Vanessa's apartment.
He hadn't spoken to her since reading his father's journal.
She opened the door cautiously.
"You shouldn't be here."
"We need to talk."
Vanessa stepped aside.
The apartment was half empty.
Suitcases stood near the entrance.
"You were leaving."
She avoided his eyes.
"I didn't have much choice."
Richard held up the journal.
"My father wrote about you."
Vanessa's face lost its color.
"He said..."
"...you were chosen."
Silence.
Richard took another step.
"Tell me the truth."
She stared at the floor.
"Everything started as an assignment."
His heart sank.
"What assignment?"
"I was told Harrington Commercial was laundering money."
"I was supposed to get close to you."
"Gather evidence."
"Report everything."
Richard's voice cracked.
"So none of it was real?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"At first..."
"No."
"But later..."
She looked up, tears filling her eyes.
"I fell in love with you."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"You expect me to believe that after everything that's happened?"
"I never meant for Khloe to get hurt."
"You pushed my pregnant wife down a flight of stairs."
Vanessa burst into tears.
"I know."
"I replay that moment every night."
Richard looked at the woman he had destroyed his marriage for.
For the first time...
He saw someone just as broken as he was.
At Harrison's townhouse, Khloe gently rocked baby Evelyn to sleep.
The tiny girl had finally gained enough weight to leave intensive care.
Her soft breathing filled the quiet nursery.
Harrison entered carrying a small wooden box.
"You should have this."
Khloe opened it.
Inside lay their father's wristwatch.
She smiled through tears.
"I haven't seen this since the funeral."
"He wanted you to have it."
Harrison hesitated.
"There was something else."
He told her everything.
Project Haven.
The Founder.
Their father's secret role.
Edward Harrington.
Vault 13.
When he finished, Khloe remained silent for a long time.
Finally, she asked,
"Do you trust the Founder?"
Harrison looked toward the sleeping baby.
"I trust facts."
"Not people."
Khloe nodded.
"Dad taught you well."
Late that night, Edward led Harrison and Daniel to the deepest section of the underground complex.
The official archive ended at Vault 12.
Beyond it stood a blank concrete wall.
Edward pointed toward the floor.
"Help me."
The three men pushed aside an old steel shelving unit.
Hidden beneath it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
Daniel shined his flashlight downward.
"There was another level all along."
Edward smiled weakly.
"James insisted on building it."
They descended carefully.
The air grew colder.
The staircase ended before a massive circular steel door.
No keypad.
No fingerprint scanner.
Only an old mechanical lock.
Above it, engraved into the metal, were four words.
THE TRUTH HAS A PRICE
Harrison inserted the brass key.
The lock clicked.
Slowly...
The enormous door swung inward.
Inside was a single room.
Unlike the vast archive above, Vault 13 contained almost nothing.
One oak desk.
One leather chair.
One floor-to-ceiling bookshelf.
And one sealed envelope resting neatly in the center of the desk.
Across the front, written in James Cole's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:
For My Son—Only Open After You Learn Who The Founder Is.
Harrison's hands trembled as he reached for the envelope.
But before he could touch it—
A familiar voice echoed from behind them.
"You've finally arrived."
The three men turned.
Standing in the doorway was Richard Harrington.
Alone.
Unarmed.
Holding his father's journal.
"I think..."
May you like
he said quietly,
"...it's time all of us learned the whole truth together."
