CHAPTER 12 — THE MAN CALLED THE FOUNDER

Silence swallowed the tunnel.

The man standing before them did not raise a weapon.

He didn't need to.

Every armed guard behind him stood perfectly still, waiting for a single command.

Power radiated from him—not through fear or violence, but through absolute control.

He looked at Harrison with quiet curiosity.

"You have your father's eyes."

Harrison stepped forward.

"You murdered him."

The man smiled faintly.

"That's what you've been told."

"I've seen his letter."

"I've read the evidence."

"And yet..."

The Founder spread his hands calmly.

"...you still don't know the truth."

Edward Harrington's voice trembled.

"Don't listen to him."

The Founder glanced toward Edward.

"You've spent eight years hiding."

"You should have spent them telling the truth."

Daniel slowly shifted his weight, searching for an opening.

The Founder's gaze moved to him immediately.

"If you're considering shooting me..."

He nodded toward the guards.

"...you'll never leave this tunnel."

Daniel knew he was right.

There were too many of them.

The Founder returned his attention to Harrison.

"I didn't come here to kill you."

"Then why are you here?"

"To offer you a choice."

Harrison almost laughed.

"You think I negotiate with criminals?"

"I think you're a lawyer."

"And lawyers understand evidence."

The Founder reached into his coat and removed a thin folder.

He tossed it onto the concrete floor.

"It belongs to you."

Harrison didn't move.

"Open it."

After a brief hesitation, Harrison bent down and picked it up.

The first page froze him in place.

James Cole

Confidential Employment Evaluation

The signature at the bottom wasn't Edward Harrington's.

It belonged to his own father.

"You forged this."

The Founder shook his head.

"Turn the page."

Harrison did.

A handwritten letter appeared.

It was unmistakably James Cole's handwriting.

If Project Haven ever becomes a weapon instead of a shield... it must end.

Harrison frowned.

"A shield?"

The Founder nodded.

"That's what Edward never understood."

Twenty-eight years earlier...

Project Haven had not been created to blackmail politicians.

Nor to protect billionaires.

It had begun for an entirely different reason.

Judges accepting bribes.

Corporations poisoning communities.

Powerful families buying justice.

Law enforcement agencies too compromised to act.

The Founder had gathered evidence privately.

Not to sell it.

Not to hide it forever.

But to ensure that if the legal system failed...

Someone still possessed the truth.

James Cole had joined the project believing exactly that.

So had Edward Harrington.

For years, it worked.

Until greed entered the picture.

Several powerful members began using the archive for leverage.

Careers were destroyed.

Judges were manipulated.

Fortunes changed hands.

The project had become the very corruption it was created to stop.

"My father tried to expose it."

The Founder nodded.

"Yes."

"He wanted to burn everything."

Edward interrupted.

"And he was right!"

"No."

The Founder's voice remained calm.

"He was only partly right."

He looked directly at Harrison.

"Your father believed every file should be destroyed."

"I believed only the corrupted ones should disappear."

Edward laughed bitterly.

"That debate cost dozens of lives."

Meanwhile, outside the mill...

Detective Laura Simmons ignored orders.

SWAT had not yet arrived.

Every instinct told her Harrison was running out of time.

She assembled four officers.

"We're going in."

One officer hesitated.

"Captain said to wait."

Laura looked toward the abandoned building.

"If Harrison Cole dies because I followed procedure..."

"...I won't forgive myself."

The team entered through the maintenance tunnel.

Across Philadelphia, Richard finally opened his father's journal.

The first pages contained ordinary memories.

Business meetings.

Family vacations.

Richard's childhood birthdays.

Then the tone changed.

One entry stopped him cold.

Richard is brilliant.

But he wants approval more than truth.

That weakness frightens me.

Richard kept reading.

Another entry.

Vanessa Kensington has entered his life.

Someone introduced her intentionally.

I fear my son doesn't realize he's being manipulated.

Richard stared at the page.

Manipulated?

He turned another page.

The final completed entry had been written just days before Edward disappeared.

If anything happens to me...

Tell Richard this was never about love.

Vanessa was chosen.

Richard's breathing stopped.

Chosen?

By whom?

Back underground, Harrison closed the folder.

"You expect me to believe Vanessa was part of this?"

"I expect you to investigate it."

The Founder remained composed.

"She didn't enter Richard's life by accident."

Edward looked horrified.

"You used that girl."

"No."

"I recruited her."

The words echoed through the tunnel.

The guards remained motionless.

Even Daniel looked stunned.

The Founder continued.

"Vanessa believed she was helping expose financial corruption inside Harrington Commercial."

"She never knew the entire truth."

Harrison frowned.

"She became Richard's mistress under your orders?"

The Founder answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Silence.

"She was never meant to fall in love with him."

"She was meant to watch him."

Edward whispered,

"My God..."

The Founder turned toward him.

"You think Richard created the corruption."

"He inherited it."

"You think Vanessa destroyed his marriage."

"No."

"His own choices did."

Suddenly, a gunshot shattered the silence.

One of the guards collapsed.

A second shot echoed through the tunnel.

Laura Simmons and her officers emerged from the maintenance passage.

"Federal agents!"

"Drop your weapons!"

Chaos erupted.

Guards scrambled for cover.

Gunfire exploded through the underground chamber.

Daniel pulled Harrison behind a concrete pillar.

Edward fell to the ground as bullets ricocheted around them.

The Founder never moved.

He simply watched the firefight unfolding around him.

Then he looked at Harrison one last time.

"We're out of time."

He reached into his coat and tossed a small brass key through the smoke.

Harrison caught it instinctively.

"What is this?"

"The last vault."

"Inside..."

The Founder paused.

"...is the only evidence that can identify everyone who truly controls Project Haven."

Before Harrison could ask another question, smoke grenades filled the tunnel.

Visibility vanished.

The guards retreated with military precision.

By the time the smoke cleared...

The Founder was gone.

Only the brass key remained in Harrison's hand.
