CHAPTER 14 — MY FATHER'S LAST CONFESSION

No one spoke.
The heavy steel door to Vault 13 remained open behind Richard Harrington.
For a long moment, the only sound was the steady hum of the underground ventilation system.
Daniel Ross instinctively stepped between Richard and Harrison.
"You've got a lot of nerve coming here."
Richard didn't argue.
"I know."
He slowly placed Edward's leather journal on the oak desk.
"I'm not here to fight."
Edward Harrington looked at his son with eyes filled with regret.
"You shouldn't have come."
Richard met his father's gaze.
"You spent eight years hiding from me."
"I spent eight years trying to keep you alive."
The words hung in the air.
Harrison finally stepped forward.
"If either of you is lying..."
"...this conversation ends now."
Neither man answered.
Instead, Harrison picked up the envelope addressed to him.
His father's handwriting had faded with time, but every letter remained unmistakable.
With careful hands, he broke the wax seal.
Inside was a twelve-page letter.
And a single photograph.
The picture showed two young men standing shoulder to shoulder outside a small courthouse.
One was James Cole.
The other was a much younger Edward Harrington.
Both were laughing.
Both looked hopeful.
On the back of the photograph, James had written:
"The law gave us justice. We dreamed Project Haven would protect it."
Harrison swallowed hard.
He continued reading.
Harry,
If you've reached this room, then you've already discovered that I wasn't simply an accountant.
I helped build Project Haven.
Not because I wanted power.
Because I believed the truth should never depend on who was rich enough to hide it.
Harrison paused.
Every person in the room listened.
Edward was my friend before he was my partner.
He wasn't perfect.
Neither was I.
But together we believed ordinary people deserved protection from extraordinary corruption.
Edward lowered his head.
Tears quietly rolled down his face.
The next page changed everything.
The Founder did not create Project Haven.
Edward and I did.
The Founder stole it.
Daniel looked up sharply.
"What?"
Harrison continued reading.
We never knew his real name.
He joined us after helping expose several corrupt judges.
He earned our trust.
Then, little by little, he convinced powerful people to fund our work.
The funding became influence.
Influence became control.
Control became fear.
Project Haven slowly stopped serving justice.
It began serving itself.
Richard stared at his father's journal.
"So everything my company became..."
Edward answered quietly.
"...began before you ever became CEO."
Richard sank into the leather chair.
"My entire life..."
"...was built on someone else's lies."
"No," Edward said.
"It was built on my silence."
Harrison turned another page.
His father's handwriting became shakier.
The ink had smeared in several places.
When I realized what Project Haven had become, I decided to expose everything.
Edward agreed.
The Founder found out first.
The room fell silent.
Harry...
If I'm gone, don't waste your life chasing revenge.
Revenge only creates another Founder.
Finish what we started instead.
Return justice to the people.
Harrison closed his eyes.
His father hadn't asked him to destroy anyone.
He had asked him to rebuild something.
Suddenly, Richard spoke.
"There are missing pages."
Everyone looked toward him.
He pointed at the letter.
"The page numbers."
Harrison checked.
Page Nine.
Then Eleven.
Page Ten was gone.
Someone had removed it decades earlier.
Edward's expression changed instantly.
"No..."
"What is it?" Harrison asked.
"Page Ten."
Edward's voice shook.
"It contained the Founder's identity."
Silence.
Someone had stolen the only page naming the man responsible for decades of corruption.
Daniel immediately searched the room.
Bookshelves.
Desk drawers.
Hidden compartments.
Nothing.
Then Khloe's father's old wristwatch—still resting in Harrison's pocket—began vibrating.
Everyone frowned.
"It's a mechanical watch," Richard said.
"It can't vibrate."
Harrison slowly removed it.
The second hand had stopped moving.
Instead, the watch pointed toward the bookshelf.
Edward's eyes widened.
"James..."
"He built another lock."
Harrison examined the shelves carefully.
One book protruded slightly farther than the others.
He pulled it.
A soft click echoed through the room.
Part of the bookshelf slowly slid aside.
Behind it lay a narrow hidden compartment.
Inside rested a small steel box.
No larger than a jewelry case.
Across the lid, engraved in tiny letters, were the words:
IF PAGE TEN IS MISSING...
OPEN THIS INSTEAD.
Harrison exchanged a glance with Edward.
James Cole had anticipated the theft.
He had prepared a backup.
With trembling hands, Harrison lifted the lid.
Inside were three items.
A USB flash drive.
An old cassette tape.
And a sealed envelope marked:
To the child of the man who betrayed us.
Richard frowned.
"My father?"
Edward slowly shook his head.
"No..."
His voice barely escaped.
"That envelope..."
"...isn't for you."
Everyone turned toward him.
Edward stared at Harrison.
Then, with tears in his eyes, he whispered the words no one expected.
"It was written..."
"...for the Founder's son."
The room froze.
If the Founder had a child...
Then the conspiracy hadn't ended with one generation.
It had already passed to the next.
May you like
And somewhere outside these walls...
The heir to Project Haven was still waiting.
