CHAPTER 7 — THE MILLIONAIRE WITHOUT POWER

Nathan couldn’t move.
His mother’s words kept repeating in his mind.
“The mastermind wasn’t your father.”
A cold silence filled Evelyn’s mansion.
Then she said the words that made his entire world tilt.
“It was me.”
Nathan stared at her.
For the first time in his life, he didn’t see his mother.
He saw a stranger.
A woman who had held his hand as a child.
A woman who kissed his forehead before school.
A woman who told him honesty mattered.
And yet…
She had been standing beside the biggest lie of his life.
“You?”
His voice was quiet.
But the pain behind it was impossible to hide.
“You did this?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“I made choices.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He stepped back.
“You controlled everything.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
His eyes hardened.
“My father said it.”
“Victoria said it.”
“Now you’re saying it.”
He looked around the room.
“Why does everyone who destroys my life always call it protection?”
Evelyn lowered her head.
Because she had no answer.
Five years earlier.
Evelyn remembered the night she made the decision that changed everything.
Grace was sitting in the hospital room.
Exhausted.
Holding newborn Lily.
Nathan was unconscious in the bed beside her.
He had collapsed from exhaustion after spending two days refusing to leave Grace’s side.
He didn’t know it then.
But that moment was the closest he had ever been to his daughter.
William stood near the window.
Cold.
Controlled.
Watching everything.
“She cannot stay.”
Evelyn looked at her husband.
“She is Nathan’s child.”
William turned.
“She is a weakness.”
Evelyn looked at Lily.
A tiny baby.
Completely innocent.
“She is family.”
William’s expression didn’t change.
“Family is exactly why this must be handled.”
Evelyn remembered the fear she felt.
Because she knew William.
When he decided something, he didn’t negotiate.
He removed obstacles.
But then William said something she never forgot.
“If Nathan knows about this child, he will destroy everything we built.”
Evelyn frowned.
“He would never choose business over his daughter.”
William smiled.
“That is why we cannot allow him to choose.”
Present day.
Nathan stared at his mother.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn wiped her tears.
“I changed the hospital records.”
Nathan felt sick.
“You erased me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father convinced me that if you knew, he would use Lily against you.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn looked away.
“Your father wasn’t protecting the company.”
A pause.
“He was protecting a secret.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“What secret?”
Evelyn hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The Cole family was never supposed to inherit everything.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“Your grandfather made a promise.”
“To who?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“To another branch of the family.”
Nathan felt a chill.
Another branch.
Another secret.
Another lie.
That evening, Nathan returned to the mansion.
But it no longer felt like home.
Every wall held a memory.
Every room held a question.
Grace found him standing in the hallway.
“You talked to her.”
Nathan nodded.
Grace immediately knew.
“She told you.”
“She was involved.”
Grace closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because I knew there was more.”
The answer surprised him.
“You knew?”
Grace nodded.
“Your mother helped me escape.”
Nathan froze.
“But she also helped hide the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Grace looked toward Lily’s room.
“Because she was afraid.”
Nathan’s voice softened.
“Of my father?”
Grace shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“Of something bigger.”
The next morning, Nathan arrived at Cole Corporation.
But something was different.
Employees stopped talking when he walked past.
Executives avoided eye contact.
His assistant rushed toward him.
“Mr. Cole.”
“What happened?”
She handed him a tablet.
Nathan looked at the screen.
A breaking announcement.
COLE CORPORATION BOARD VOTES TO REMOVE NATHAN COLE AS CEO PENDING INVESTIGATION.
He stared.
“They moved quickly.”
His assistant nodded.
“Your access has been restricted.”
Nathan looked up.
“What?”
“Your company accounts.”
“Blocked.”
“Your corporate authority.”
“Suspended.”
Nathan almost smiled.
Because now he understood.
They weren’t trying to investigate him.
They were trying to isolate him.
Remove his power.
Remove his ability to fight.
The billionaire who controlled thousands of employees suddenly had nothing.
No company.
No authority.
No protection.
Inside the boardroom, Richard Hale waited.
“You should have accepted the arrangement.”
Nathan walked in.
“What arrangement?”
Richard sighed.
“The one your father created.”
Nathan stared.
“The one where everyone controls my life?”
Richard didn’t deny it.
“That is how families like ours survive.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“No.”
His voice was cold.
“That is how families like ours rot.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You are willing to destroy generations of work for one woman?”
Nathan looked directly at him.
“For my daughter.”
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“You sound exactly like your father.”
Nathan stopped.
The words hit him.
Because that was what everyone feared.
Becoming William Cole.
But Nathan finally understood.
His father wasn’t powerful because he controlled people.
He was weak because he needed to.
“I am nothing like him.”
Richard smiled slightly.
“Then prove it.”
That night, Nathan returned home without security.
Without assistants.
Without the army of employees that followed him everywhere.
For the first time in years…
He was just Nathan.
Grace noticed immediately.
“What happened?”
He placed his phone on the table.
“They took everything.”
Her face changed.
“The company?”
“Yes.”
“Your accounts?”
“Yes.”
She looked worried.
“Nathan…”
He looked at Lily playing nearby.
Then smiled.
“But they made one mistake.”
Grace looked at him.
“What?”
“They thought my power came from money.”
A small smile appeared.
“It never did.”
Later that night, Nathan received a package.
No sender.
No address.
Inside was an old family journal.
The handwriting belonged to his grandfather.
Nathan opened the first page.
One sentence immediately caught his attention.
“The Cole fortune was built on a stolen inheritance.”
He turned the page.
Then another.
And another.
Until he found a name.
A name connected to Lily.
A name connected to Grace.
A name that explained why everyone was terrified of the child.
Nathan whispered:
“No…”
Because the truth was finally becoming clear.
Lily wasn’t dangerous because she was the heir.
She was dangerous because she was proof.
Proof that the Cole family had taken everything from someone else.
May you like
And that someone…
Was still alive.
