CHAPTER 6 — THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Nathan did not sleep.
Not even for a minute.
He sat alone in the dark office, surrounded by documents, photographs, and unanswered questions.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same image.
A hospital room.
Grace holding newborn Lily.
His mother standing beside them.
And himself…
Somewhere in the background.
Unconscious.
A man who had supposedly never known his daughter existed.
But the photograph proved something else.
He had been there.
He had been there the night Lily was born.
And someone had made sure he forgot.
Nathan looked at the old picture again.
The edges were worn.
The colors had faded.
But the truth inside it remained.
Someone had stolen a memory from him.
Someone had stolen five years from him.
His phone rang.
Michael Reed.
Nathan answered immediately.
“What did you find?”
The attorney’s voice sounded serious.
“Something that changes everything.”
Nathan stood.
“Tell me.”
“I checked the hospital records from five years ago.”
“And?”
“There is no official record showing you were admitted.”
Nathan frowned.
“But the picture.”
“I know.”
Michael paused.
“That’s the problem.”
Nathan walked toward the window.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone removed the record.”
Nathan looked at the city below.
His father had spent years controlling companies.
Influencing politicians.
Manipulating people.
But erasing a hospital record?
That required more than money.
It required access.
Power.
And cooperation.
“Who could do that?”
Michael answered quietly.
“Someone inside your family.”
The next morning, the first attack came.
Not from Victoria.
Not from the media.
From the company itself.
At 8:00 a.m., every major financial news network reported the same story.
COLE CORPORATION BOARD CALLS FOR EMERGENCY REVIEW OF CEO’S LEADERSHIP.
Nathan watched the headline appear on his computer screen.
He almost laughed.
Almost.
Because the timing was too perfect.
The moment he protected Grace.
The moment he challenged the family.
The moment he started searching for the truth.
They attacked.
His assistant entered the office.
“Mr. Cole?”
Nathan didn’t turn.
“Yes?”
“The board meeting has been scheduled.”
“When?”
“Today.”
Nathan smiled slightly.
“Of course it has.”
His assistant hesitated.
“Sir…”
Nathan looked back.
“What?”
“Some employees are saying the allegations against Ms. Miller are true.”
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“Some employees?”
She lowered her eyes.
“The story is spreading.”
Nathan closed his laptop.
“Then we stop it.”
The emergency boardroom meeting was already full when Nathan arrived.
Every seat was occupied.
Every face looked serious.
But Nathan noticed something.
They weren’t angry.
They were prepared.
This wasn’t a meeting.
It was a trial.
Richard Hale stood first.
“Nathan.”
The older executive gave him a disappointed look.
“You have placed this company in a dangerous position.”
Nathan sat down.
“Because I defended an innocent woman?”
Richard sighed.
“Because you allowed personal emotions to affect business decisions.”
Nathan looked around the room.
“Interesting.”
Nobody spoke.
“Because five years ago, when my father made personal decisions about my life, nobody called it emotional.”
The room became uncomfortable.
Richard’s face tightened.
“Your father protected this company.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“He protected his control over it.”
A few executives exchanged looks.
Richard noticed.
“Nathan, be careful.”
“There it is again.”
“What?”
“The warning.”
Nathan looked directly at him.
“Everyone keeps telling me to be careful.”
He paused.
“Careful of the truth.”
Richard opened a folder.
“Since you refuse to prioritize the company, we have prepared a temporary leadership review.”
Nathan looked at the documents.
Suspension.
Investigation.
Restriction of authority.
They wanted to remove him.
“Who approved this?”
Richard answered:
“The board.”
Nathan looked around.
“Everyone?”
Silence.
Then one person raised her hand.
Victoria.
Nathan’s face changed.
She was sitting at the end of the table.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly calm.
Like nothing had happened.
“You?”
Victoria looked at him.
“I’m protecting what we built.”
Nathan stared.
“What we built?”
Her expression remained cold.
“Our future.”
Nathan laughed quietly.
“Our future was a business contract.”
Victoria’s eyes sharpened.
“You think Grace understands your world?”
Nathan stood.
“And you think you do?”
The room became silent.
Victoria looked at him.
“I know what it takes to survive.”
Nathan looked at her.
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“You know what it takes to win.”
A pause.
“But you never learned what it takes to love.”
For the first time…
Victoria looked hurt.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
That evening, Nathan returned home early.
He found Grace sitting with Lily in the living room.
Lily was watching cartoons.
Grace immediately noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
Nathan sat down.
“They’re trying to remove me from the company.”
Grace became worried.
“Because of me?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Lily.
“Because of the truth.”
Grace was quiet.
Then she asked:
“Are you scared?”
Nathan thought about it.
For most of his life, he had been afraid.
Afraid of disappointing his father.
Afraid of losing the company.
Afraid of becoming someone his family considered weak.
But now?
“No.”
Grace looked surprised.
“Why?”
Nathan smiled sadly.
“Because for the first time, I have something worth losing.”
Later that night, Lily woke up crying.
Nathan heard her from the hallway.
He walked in.
She was sitting on the bed.
“Daddy?”
Nathan immediately went to her.
“What happened?”
“I had a bad dream.”
He sat beside her.
“What about?”
Lily looked down.
“Someone took Mommy away.”
Nathan’s heart tightened.
“Who?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she whispered:
“But Mommy was crying.”
Nathan looked toward the door.
Grace was standing there.
She had heard.
And her face had gone pale.
Because she knew exactly what Lily was remembering.
A night from five years ago.
A night she had tried to forget.
After Lily fell asleep, Nathan and Grace sat in the kitchen.
“You know what she remembers.”
Grace looked down.
“Yes.”
“Tell me.”
Grace stayed silent.
Nathan didn’t push.
Not because he didn’t want the truth.
Because he understood fear now.
Finally, she spoke.
“The night Lily was born wasn’t the only night your family came after me.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What happened?”
Grace swallowed.
“Two days after we left the hospital, someone tried to take Lily.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“What?”
“I escaped.”
“Who?”
Grace shook her head.
“I never saw his face.”
Nathan’s hands tightened.
“But you know it was connected to my family.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Grace looked at him.
“Because before he left…”
She paused.
“He said your father’s name.”
At midnight, Nathan received another message.
This time from Daniel, his security chief.
We found the person who leaked Grace’s information.
Nathan immediately replied.
Who?
The answer came seconds later.
A name.
Nathan stared.
Because it wasn’t Victoria.
It wasn’t Arthur Hargrove.
It wasn’t one of the executives.
It was someone much closer.
Someone who had been beside Nathan since childhood.
Someone who had attended every family event.
Someone who had smiled at Lily only hours earlier.
The message showed the name:
EVELYN COLE.
Nathan stopped breathing.
His mother.
The next morning, Nathan confronted Evelyn at her mansion.
She opened the door before he knocked.
Almost like she was expecting him.
“You know.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Did you leak Grace’s information?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
A painful silence followed.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.”
Nathan felt betrayed.
More than he expected.
“Why?”
His mother looked older suddenly.
Tired.
Broken.
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“By destroying me?”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“By forcing you to see the truth.”
Nathan froze.
“What truth?”
Evelyn looked toward the street.
Then whispered:
“Your father wasn’t the mastermind.”
Nathan felt cold.
“What are you saying?”
Evelyn looked directly into his eyes.
“The man you spent your entire life fearing…”
A pause.
“He was only following orders.”
Nathan’s heart stopped.
“Whose orders?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
May you like
And she said the words that changed everything:
“Mine.”
