CHAPTER 1 — THE DAUGHTER HE NEVER KNEW

The hockey stick was still lying on the kitchen floor.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For several seconds, Nathan Cole couldn’t understand what he was seeing.

The woman he was supposed to marry in fourteen days was standing in the middle of his kitchen, her expensive white dress stained with a few drops of blood from the woman lying on the floor.

Grace Miller.

The quiet maid.

The woman who had barely looked him in the eyes since the day she started working in his home.

The woman who had always lowered her voice, apologized too much, and disappeared whenever important guests arrived.

Nathan had thought she was simply shy.

Now he realized he had never truly seen her.

Because lying beneath her protective arms was a little girl.

A little girl who had just called him something impossible.

Something that shattered five years of his life in a single second.

“Daddy…”

The word echoed in Nathan’s mind.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a small, innocent whisper from a child who had no idea she had just destroyed the world of one of the richest men in America.

Nathan stared at Lily.

His daughter.

The thought felt unreal.

Impossible.

His eyes moved from the child to Grace.

Grace was still holding Lily tightly.

Her face was pale.

Her lips trembled.

But the fear in her eyes wasn’t for herself.

It was for the little girl.

That was when Nathan understood something that hurt more than anything.

Grace had spent years protecting this child.

Alone.

Without him.

“Grace…” Nathan finally whispered.

His voice sounded unfamiliar.

“You need to tell me the truth.”

Grace closed her eyes.

For five years, she had imagined this moment.

She imagined Nathan finding out.

She imagined his anger.

His confusion.

His hatred.

But she had never imagined it happening like this.

With Lily crying.

With Victoria standing nearby.

With a weapon on the floor.

“I wanted to tell you,” Grace said softly.

Her voice broke.

“So many times.”

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“Nathan, don’t listen to her.”

Her voice was calm again.

Almost too calm.

“She is manipulating you.”

Nathan slowly turned his head toward her.

For the first time since entering the room, he looked at Victoria.

Really looked at her.

The woman he thought he knew.

The woman who laughed beside him at charity events.

The woman who held his hand in front of cameras.

The woman who had convinced him she was the only person in his life who truly loved him.

But now he saw something different.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

Because she knew the truth was finally escaping.

“What happened here?” Nathan asked.

Victoria swallowed.

“She attacked me.”

The lie came instantly.

Smoothly.

Practiced.

Nathan looked down at the hockey stick.

Then at Grace’s injured shoulder.

Then at Lily’s terrified face.

“No.”

The word came quietly.

But it carried more power than shouting.

Victoria froze.

“What?”

Nathan stepped closer.

“You’re lying.”

The kitchen became colder.

Victoria stared at him.

“You believe her?”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“No.”

Then his eyes moved back to Victoria.

“I believe what I see.”

For the first time, Victoria looked small.

But only for a moment.

Then her expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

Something darker replaced it.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria smiled faintly.

A smile without warmth.

“It means you should ask your father why Grace disappeared five years ago.”

Nathan felt his chest tighten.

His father.

Even after death, that man still controlled his life.

Nathan’s father, William Cole, had built the Cole Corporation from nothing.

He had been respected.

Feared.

Powerful.

And Nathan had spent his entire life trying to become the son his father wanted.

But William had died two years earlier.

Taking most of his secrets with him.

Or so Nathan believed.

Grace slowly tried to stand.

Nathan immediately moved toward her.

“Don’t.”

She flinched.

Not because she feared him.

Because she wasn’t used to anyone helping her.

Nathan stopped.

That tiny reaction hurt him.

“How long?” he asked.

Grace looked confused.

“What?”

“How long did you know?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Since the day she was born.”

Nathan felt the air leave his lungs.

“Five years.”

Grace nodded.

“Five years.”

“And you never told me?”

The pain in his voice was impossible to hide.

Grace looked down.

“I tried.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you?”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Because your father threatened me.”

Silence.

Even Victoria stopped pretending.

Nathan’s face changed.

“My father?”

Grace nodded slowly.

“He found out I was pregnant before I could tell you.”

Nathan stepped backward.

“No.”

“He came to my apartment.”

“Stop.”

“He told me that if I contacted you, he would destroy my life.”

“Grace…”

“He said he would make sure I lost Lily.”

Nathan shook his head.

“My father wouldn’t do that.”

But even as he said it, he remembered.

The contracts.

The threats.

The way William controlled everyone around him.

The way employees disappeared after disagreeing with him.

The way people lowered their voices whenever they spoke his name.

Grace looked at him.

“He told me you would choose him over me.”

Nathan said nothing.

Because deep down…

He knew exactly why Grace believed that.

Because he had.

For most of his life.

He had chosen his father.

Until now.

Lily slowly reached toward him.

Nathan looked at her tiny hand.

A child he never held.

A child whose first steps he missed.

Her first words.

Her first birthday.

Every moment stolen.

“Can I…”

His voice broke.

“Can I hold her?”

Grace hesitated.

That hesitation destroyed him.

She wasn’t protecting Lily from Victoria anymore.

She was protecting Lily from him.

After everything that happened, she didn’t know if Nathan was safe.

That realization hurt more than any accusation.

Finally, Grace nodded.

Slowly.

Nathan knelt down.

Lily looked at him carefully.

Then she reached forward.

The moment Nathan lifted her into his arms, something inside him collapsed.

She was so small.

So light.

Yet she carried five years of secrets.

Five years of loneliness.

Five years of a life he should have shared.

Lily placed her head against his chest.

Nathan closed his eyes.

And for the first time in years…

The billionaire who owned skyscrapers, companies, and private jets felt completely powerless.

Because he had everything.

Except the one thing that mattered.

His daughter.

Behind him, Victoria quietly picked up her phone.

Nobody noticed.

Nobody saw the message she sent.

“The girl is confirmed. Begin phase two.”

Two days later, Nathan Cole learned the truth.

Or at least, he learned the first piece of it.

Because the envelope from his father’s safe was not a confession.

It was a warning.

Nathan’s attorney, Michael Reed, arrived at the mansion just after sunrise.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Like he hadn’t slept.

“Nathan.”

Michael placed a sealed brown envelope on the table.

“This was found inside your father’s private vault.”

Nathan stared at it.

“Why didn’t you give this to me earlier?”

Michael hesitated.

“Because your father instructed me not to.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“My father is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you still following his orders?”

Michael looked at the envelope.

“Because William Cole was very specific.”

Nathan picked it up.

“What did he say?”

Michael took a breath.

“He said…”

The attorney’s voice lowered.

“If Nathan ever discovers the truth about Grace Miller and the child, give him this.”

Nathan felt his fingers tighten around the envelope.

“And?”

Michael looked directly at him.

“He said, ‘My son will finally understand who the real enemy was.’”

Nathan opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

His father.

Victoria’s father.

And a younger Grace.

Standing together.

Nathan’s blood ran cold.

Because the photo was dated…

Five years ago.

The same year Lily was born.

Under the photograph was one sentence written in William Cole’s handwriting.

“The child was never the secret.”

Nathan stared at the words.

Then turned the page.

And found the name of the person who had ordered Grace’s disappearance.

A name he never expected.

A name that would change everything.

Nathan Cole.

Not him.

His father.

But written beneath it was a second line.

A line that made his heart stop.

“You were never meant to know your own daughter.”

And below that…

A signature.

Not William’s.

Not Victoria’s.

Someone else.

May you like

Someone still alive.

Someone who had been watching Nathan his entire life.
