CHAPTER 17 — THE LAST BATTLE FOR LILY

The world watched the screen in complete silence.

The DNA report remained visible behind Nathan.

A result nobody expected.

A result that destroyed every version of the truth they had been given.

LILY MILLER MATCHES THE COLE BLOODLINE.

But not through Nathan.

Through Charles Cole.

Nathan stared at the document.

His mind struggled to process it.

Charles.

His uncle.

The man who had spent weeks trying to destroy him.

Was connected to Lily.

Not as an enemy.

As family.

The reporters exploded.

Questions filled the room.

“Mr. Cole, is Charles Cole Lily’s biological grandfather?”

“Was William Cole hiding another child?”

“Is the Cole family inheritance fraudulent?”

Nathan didn’t answer.

Because for the first time…

He had no idea what the truth was.

Behind the cameras, Michael Reed rushed toward him.

“Nathan.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Tell me this is wrong.”

Michael’s face was pale.

“I can’t.”

Nathan looked back at the screen.

“How?”

The attorney opened a file.

“The DNA comparison wasn’t between Lily and Charles directly.”

Nathan frowned.

“What?”

“It was between Lily and archived Cole genetic records.”

Michael paused.

“Charles provided them.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“He planned this.”

“Yes.”

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

Nathan clenched his fists.

Charles didn’t accidentally discover the truth.

He had been waiting.

At the mansion, Grace watched the broadcast.

Lily sat beside her.

“Mommy?”

Grace immediately turned.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Why are people talking about me?”

Grace forced a smile.

“Because sometimes adults make things complicated.”

Lily looked confused.

“Am I in trouble?”

Grace’s heart broke.

“No.”

She hugged her daughter.

“You did nothing wrong.”

But deep down…

Grace was terrified.

Because she knew what powerful people did when children became valuable.

They stopped seeing them as children.

They saw them as keys.

Nathan returned home that night.

He found Grace sitting at the kitchen table.

The same kitchen where everything began.

The same place where Victoria raised the hockey stick.

The same place where Lily whispered her first word to him.

“Daddy.”

Grace looked at him.

“You found out.”

Nathan nodded.

“She’s connected to Charles.”

Grace looked down.

“I knew something was wrong.”

Nathan sat across from her.

“What do you mean?”

Grace took a breath.

“When Lily was born…”

She hesitated.

“There was someone else at the hospital.”

Nathan looked at her.

“Who?”

Grace whispered:

“Charles.”

Five years earlier.

Grace remembered the hospital hallway.

The night everything changed.

Nathan was unconscious.

William was angry.

Evelyn was afraid.

But one person appeared unexpectedly.

Charles Cole.

He looked different from William.

Less controlled.

More emotional.

He saw Lily.

And his expression changed.

Not like a businessman.

Like a grandfather.

Grace remembered him saying:

“She has my mother’s eyes.”

Grace had been confused.

“Your mother?”

Charles immediately realized he said too much.

Then William arrived.

And the conversation ended.

Present day.

Nathan stared at Grace.

“You never told me.”

“I forgot.”

Nathan looked surprised.

“You forgot?”

Grace nodded.

“Because so much happened after.”

She looked toward Lily’s room.

“I was trying to survive.”

Nathan understood.

Five years of fear could bury memories.

Meanwhile, Charles Cole sat in a private room watching the news.

Daniel stood nearby.

“You did it.”

Charles smiled.

“Almost.”

Daniel frowned.

“Almost?”

Charles looked at the screen.

“Nathan still has something I never had.”

“What?”

Charles answered:

“People who believe in him.”

Daniel was silent.

Because that was the one thing Charles never understood.

He believed power came from control.

Nathan had discovered power came from connection.

“Father.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Was this always your plan?”

Charles looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Even Lily?”

Charles’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

“She was never supposed to suffer.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why attack her?”

Charles sighed.

“Because I needed Nathan to reveal the truth.”

Daniel stared.

“You could have just told him.”

Charles laughed.

“No one believes the truth when it comes from a person they hate.”

Nathan and Michael began investigating Charles.

Not his claims.

His past.

They discovered something shocking.

Charles wasn’t removed from the Cole family because of a business disagreement.

He was removed because of a secret.

A secret William buried.

Twenty years earlier, Charles had a daughter.

A daughter nobody knew about.

A daughter whose existence threatened the family.

Her name:

Emily Cole.

Nathan stared at the records.

“Another child?”

Michael nodded.

“Another secret.”

Nathan felt exhausted.

“How many people did my family erase?”

Michael didn’t answer.

Because nobody knew.

The search for Emily led nowhere.

No school records.

No employment history.

No social media.

Nothing.

Just like Adrian Vale.

Just like Grace.

Someone had erased another person.

But why?

Then Nathan found the connection.

Emily’s birth date.

The same year Charles disappeared.

The same year William took control of the company.

Nathan looked at the timeline.

And suddenly understood.

William wasn’t just hiding enemies.

He was hiding family members.

That night, Nathan received a call.

A woman.

Unknown number.

“Is this Nathan Cole?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Emily.”

Nathan froze.

“Emily who?”

Silence.

Then:

“Emily Cole.”

Nathan stood.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Why?”

Her voice trembled.

“Because someone has been looking for me.”

Nathan’s heart tightened.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your father.”

Nathan froze.

“My father is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then who?”

Emily whispered:

“The person who continued his work.”

The call ended.

Nathan immediately called Michael.

“We need to find Emily Cole.”

Michael was silent.

“Nathan.”

“What?”

“There is something else.”

“What?”

Michael’s voice became quiet.

“Emily isn’t Charles’s only hidden child.”

Nathan felt cold.

“What do you mean?”

“Your grandfather had another child.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another person.

Another life destroyed.

The Cole family wasn’t a dynasty.

It was a graveyard of buried truths.

The next day, Nathan decided to do something nobody expected.

He withdrew all legal claims to the Cole empire.

The announcement shocked everyone.

Reporters surrounded him.

“Why are you giving up?”

Nathan looked at the cameras.

“Because I finally understand.”

A pause.

“The mistake my family made was believing ownership was more important than people.”

He continued:

“I don’t need the company to prove who I am.”

The reporters became silent.

“I need my daughter to know I chose her.”

But before Nathan could leave…

A lawyer approached.

“Mr. Cole.”

Nathan stopped.

“This was delivered for you.”

An envelope.

No sender.

Inside:

A photograph.

A document.

And a handwritten note.

Nathan opened it.

The note contained one sentence:

“If you want to save Lily, stop looking for the past.”

Below it:

“Look at the person standing beside you.”

Nathan’s heart stopped.

Because the photograph showed…

Grace.

Holding newborn Lily.

But behind them…

Standing in the hospital doorway…

Was Nathan.

And beside him…

Was someone else.

Someone he recognized.

Someone who had been helping him from the beginning.

Michael Reed.

Nathan stared at the image.

Because the impossible had happened again.

The person he trusted most…

Had been there from the beginning.

The final battle was no longer about the Cole empire.

May you like

It was about discovering who had truly protected Lily…

And who had secretly controlled her entire life.
