CHAPTER 10 — THE TRIAL OF GRACE MILLER

The arrest warrant arrived at 6:15 in the morning.

Nathan knew something was wrong the moment he saw the police vehicles outside the mansion.

Not one.

Not two.

Seven.

Black SUVs lined the driveway.

News cameras waited behind the gates.

Reporters already knew.

Which meant someone had called them.

Someone wanted this moment recorded.

Nathan walked downstairs and saw Grace standing in the foyer.

She was holding Lily.

Her face was pale.

But she wasn’t crying.

That scared Nathan more than anything.

Because he knew Grace.

She only became that quiet when she was terrified.

“What happened?” Nathan asked.

The officers stepped forward.

“Mr. Cole?”

Nathan looked at them.

“Yes?”

The lead investigator held up a document.

“We have a warrant for Grace Miller.”

Grace closed her eyes.

Nathan immediately stepped in front of her.

“On what charge?”

The officer hesitated.

Then said:

“Child abduction.”

The world went silent.

Lily tightened her arms around Grace.

“No.”

The little girl whispered.

“Mommy didn’t take me.”

Nathan felt something break inside him.

Because Lily was already learning the cruelty of the world.

A world where people could lie about the person who protected her most.

The evidence was everywhere.

Too much.

That was what made Nathan suspicious.

The police had photographs.

Documents.

Witness statements.

Everything.

Perfect.

Almost too perfect.

The first report claimed Grace had secretly taken Lily from the hospital five years earlier.

The second claimed she had hidden the child from Nathan for financial gain.

The third claimed she planned to leave the country.

Every accusation painted the same picture.

A desperate woman.

A stolen child.

A billionaire victim.

Except Nathan knew the truth.

Grace had never wanted money.

She had spent five years living quietly.

Working as a maid.

Wearing a uniform.

Cleaning the home of the man who didn’t know she had given him the greatest gift of his life.

If Grace wanted power…

She would have revealed Lily years ago.

At the police station, Nathan sat beside Grace during questioning.

The investigator placed the file on the table.

“You understand the seriousness of these accusations?”

Grace nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why did you hide Nathan Cole’s daughter?”

Grace looked down.

“I didn’t hide her.”

The investigator raised an eyebrow.

“You kept her identity secret.”

“Yes.”

“From her father.”

Grace looked directly at him.

“Because her father didn’t know.”

The investigator leaned forward.

“Convenient.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“Careful.”

The investigator looked at him.

“Mr. Cole, you are emotionally involved.”

Nathan leaned closer.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I am the person who knows exactly what happened.”

The investigator opened another folder.

“Then explain this.”

He pushed a document forward.

A custody agreement.

Grace’s signature.

Nathan read it.

His face changed.

“This isn’t real.”

The investigator smiled slightly.

“How do you know?”

“Because Grace never signed this.”

The investigator looked surprised.

“How can you be certain?”

Nathan looked at the signature.

“Because I know her handwriting.”

Grace looked at him.

For a second…

She forgot they were surrounded by police.

Because nobody had ever defended her like that.

Across the city, Victoria watched the news.

Grace’s arrest dominated every channel.

The headline:

“COLE FAMILY MAID ARRESTED IN SECRET HEIR CASE.”

Victoria sat silently.

Her father stood behind her.

“You should be happy.”

She didn’t answer.

Arthur noticed.

“What?”

Victoria looked at the screen.

“She looks exactly like I did.”

Arthur frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Trapped.”

The word surprised him.

Victoria continued.

“Everyone thinks I wanted this.”

Arthur remained silent.

“But I didn’t.”

For the first time in years, Victoria admitted something she hated.

“I wanted Nathan.”

Her father laughed.

“You wanted his name.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at the screen.

“I wanted the man before he became a weapon.”

Arthur stared at her.

Because he knew.

Victoria was starting to regret everything.

And regret was dangerous.

Nathan returned to the mansion after Grace’s temporary release.

Lily ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

He picked her up.

But his smile disappeared when he saw the fear in her eyes.

“Are they taking Mommy?”

Nathan hugged her tighter.

“No.”

“But they said bad things.”

“I know.”

“Are they true?”

Nathan looked at Grace.

Then back at Lily.

“No.”

His voice was certain.

“Your mommy protected you.”

Lily whispered:

“Will you protect her?”

Nathan swallowed.

“Yes.”

A simple promise.

But one he knew would cost him everything.

Michael Reed arrived that night with another discovery.

“Nathan.”

The urgency in his voice immediately got Nathan’s attention.

“What?”

“The evidence against Grace.”

“What about it?”

“It came from inside Cole Corporation.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“Who?”

Michael placed a file on the table.

“We traced the digital signature.”

Nathan opened it.

The name appeared.

Cole Family Legal Department.

Nathan stared.

“My own company.”

“Yes.”

“Who authorized it?”

Michael hesitated.

Nathan already knew.

“Tell me.”

Michael looked at him.

“Your father’s old legal advisor.”

Nathan frowned.

“He died.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then who signed?”

Michael turned the page.

Nathan’s face changed.

Because the signature belonged to someone alive.

Someone powerful.

Someone who had been helping him.

Richard Hale.

Nathan went straight to Richard’s office.

The older executive didn’t look surprised.

“You found out.”

Nathan closed the door.

“You framed Grace.”

Richard sighed.

“I protected the company.”

“You destroyed an innocent woman.”

Richard looked at him.

“Nathan, you still think this is about Grace.”

“What else would it be about?”

Richard stood.

“The company.”

Nathan laughed.

“No.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“You have no idea what your father built.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“Then tell me.”

Richard hesitated.

For the first time, Nathan saw fear.

“The Cole empire cannot survive the truth.”

“What truth?”

Richard looked away.

“The truth that your family stole everything.”

Nathan froze.

“You knew about the Vale family.”

Richard said nothing.

“That’s why Lily is dangerous.”

Silence.

Richard finally whispered:

“Yes.”

Nathan stared.

“Because she can take the company?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

That answer surprised him.

“Then why?”

Richard looked directly at him.

“Because she can expose every crime committed to create it.”

That night, Nathan returned home.

Grace was waiting.

“You found something.”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“What?”

He sat beside her.

“The people attacking you aren’t trying to remove you.”

Grace looked confused.

“Then what?”

Nathan looked toward Lily’s room.

“They’re trying to erase the proof.”

Grace understood.

Lily.

The child wasn’t the target because she was weak.

She was the target because she was powerful.

Not because of money.

Because of truth.

At midnight, Nathan received a final message.

A video.

No sender.

No explanation.

He pressed play.

The recording showed William Cole.

But this time…

He wasn’t angry.

He looked afraid.

“Nathan…”

His father stared into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then they have already come after Grace.”

Nathan leaned closer.

William continued:

“I need you to understand something.”

A pause.

“Grace Miller was never the danger.”

Nathan held his breath.

“The danger was the person who convinced me to destroy her life.”

The screen flickered.

Then William said the name.

A name Nathan never expected.

A name that made his entire body go cold.

“The person who started this was Victoria Hargrove’s mother.”

The video ended.

Nathan stared at the black screen.

Because the conspiracy was bigger than he imagined.

Victoria wasn’t the beginning.

She was only the next generation.

May you like

And somewhere in the shadows…

The person who created the entire plan was still alive.
