CHAPTER 15 — THE WOMAN WHO LOST EVERYTHING

Nathan arrived at the abandoned church just before midnight.

The location was strange.

Almost symbolic.

A place where people came to confess.

A place where secrets were supposed to be released.

The old wooden doors creaked as he pushed them open.

Inside, only one person waited.

A man standing near the altar.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying the weight of years on his face.

Nathan immediately recognized him.

Not because they had met.

Because he had seen him before.

In photographs.

In old files.

In the shadows of his family’s history.

“Thomas Vale.”

The man turned.

“You finally came.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“You called me.”

Thomas nodded.

“I did.”

“You said you know why my father saved Lily.”

Thomas looked toward the empty church.

“I know why he made the choice.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“Then tell me.”

Thomas was silent for several seconds.

Then he said:

“Because Lily was the only innocent person left.”

The answer angered Nathan.

“Innocent?”

His voice rose.

“My father destroyed Grace’s life.”

“Yes.”

“He erased my memory.”

“Yes.”

“He manipulated everyone around him.”

“Yes.”

Nathan stared.

“And you call him protecting someone?”

Thomas looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I call it his final attempt to undo what he had done.”

Thomas opened an old folder.

Inside were medical records.

Photographs.

Documents.

The same kind of evidence Nathan had been chasing for weeks.

But this time…

Something was different.

These were originals.

Untouched.

“Five years ago,” Thomas began, “William discovered something.”

Nathan looked at the files.

“What?”

“Eleanor Hargrove wasn’t trying to control the company.”

Nathan frowned.

“What was she trying to do?”

Thomas looked at him.

“She was trying to erase every surviving member of the Vale bloodline.”

Nathan froze.

“Why?”

Thomas answered quietly:

“Because Eleanor’s family had been responsible for the original betrayal.”

Nathan stared.

“I thought the Hargroves were working with my family.”

“They were.”

“Then why destroy the Vales?”

Thomas looked at the documents.

“Because the Hargroves wanted the company for themselves.”

Nathan slowly understood.

The Cole family had stolen the company.

But the Hargroves wanted to steal it from them.

Everyone had been fighting over the same thing.

Power.

Control.

Ownership.

And Grace and Lily were the only people who never wanted any of it.

“Then why did my father help Eleanor?”

Thomas looked away.

“Because William was weak.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

Nobody had ever described his father that way.

“Explain.”

“He spent his entire life trying to protect the empire.”

Thomas sighed.

“When Eleanor offered him a way to keep control, he accepted.”

Nathan looked at the files.

“But then he changed.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Thomas answered:

“When he met Lily.”

Five years earlier.

William Cole entered the hospital room expecting a problem.

A negotiation.

A threat.

A situation to control.

That was how he lived.

Everything was business.

Everything had a price.

Then he saw Lily.

A newborn baby.

His granddaughter.

Tiny.

Fragile.

Completely unaware of the world waiting to use her.

And for the first time in decades…

William Cole felt something he hated.

Guilt.

He looked at Nathan sleeping nearby.

His son.

The boy he raised to value power over emotion.

And he realized what he had created.

A man who had everything.

Except freedom.

That night, William made a decision.

He would continue the lie.

But he would change the ending.

Present day.

Nathan listened silently.

“So my father protected Lily?”

Thomas nodded.

“Not because she was the heir.”

A pause.

“Because she was the only thing in that room that didn’t deserve the consequences of adults’ mistakes.”

Nathan looked down.

For years, he had wanted to hate his father.

It was easier.

Simple.

But the truth was harder.

William Cole was not a hero.

He was not innocent.

He was a man who caused pain.

Then spent the end of his life trying to repair a fraction of it.

Nathan returned home before sunrise.

Grace was awake.

She knew immediately something had happened.

“What did you find?”

Nathan sat down.

For a moment, he couldn’t speak.

Then:

“Your mother died because of the war between these families.”

Grace’s face changed.

“My mother?”

Nathan nodded.

“But William tried to stop it.”

She looked confused.

“Why?”

Nathan looked toward Lily’s room.

“Because he realized something.”

“What?”

“That children shouldn’t inherit the sins of their parents.”

Grace looked down.

“That’s what he should have believed from the beginning.”

Nathan nodded.

“You’re right.”

The answer surprised her.

Because Nathan wasn’t defending his father.

He was accepting the truth.

Meanwhile, Victoria Hargrove sat alone in her apartment.

Everything was gone.

The wedding.

The company.

The future she had spent her entire life preparing for.

The media had turned against her.

The board had abandoned her.

Her father disappeared from public view.

For the first time…

Victoria had nothing.

No influence.

No power.

No image.

Only herself.

A knock came at the door.

She expected security.

Instead…

It was Grace.

Victoria froze.

“What are you doing here?”

Grace stepped inside.

“I wanted answers.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“From me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Grace looked at her.

“Because I think we were both used.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

Nobody had ever said that to her.

“You hate me.”

Grace was silent.

“Yes.”

Victoria looked away.

“But?”

Grace continued:

“But I also know what it feels like to have powerful people decide your entire life.”

Victoria looked at her.

For the first time, there was no anger between them.

Only two women who had both been controlled.

Victoria finally spoke.

“My mother told me you were dangerous.”

Grace said nothing.

“She said if Lily existed, I would lose everything.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“She was right.”

Grace looked surprised.

Victoria continued.

“But she never told me the truth.”

“What truth?”

Victoria looked down.

“That Lily wasn’t the threat.”

A pause.

“She was the proof.”

Grace understood.

The proof of everything.

The stolen inheritance.

The corruption.

The lies.

Victoria handed Grace a small envelope.

“What is this?”

“Something my mother hid.”

Grace opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

The same one Nathan had found.

But this version had writing on the back.

Grace read it.

Her hands began shaking.

“What does it say?”

Victoria looked away.

“It says Eleanor knew Lily would be born before anyone else.”

Grace looked up.

“How?”

Victoria whispered:

“Because she was the doctor who delivered her.”

Silence.

Grace dropped the photograph.

“That’s impossible.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“That’s the final secret.”

Nathan arrived moments later after Grace called him.

When he saw Victoria there, his expression immediately changed.

“What is she doing here?”

Grace held up the photograph.

“Nathan.”

He looked.

Then stopped.

Because the handwriting.

The date.

The signature.

Everything matched.

Eleanor Hargrove had been there the night Lily was born.

She wasn’t just part of the conspiracy.

She was at the beginning.

Nathan whispered:

“She delivered my daughter.”

Grace nodded.

“And she knew everything.”

That night, Nathan confronted Eleanor.

But when he arrived at her mansion…

The house was empty.

No guards.

No employees.

Nothing.

Except one envelope on the table.

Inside was a letter.

Eleanor’s handwriting.

Nathan opened it.

The first sentence made his blood freeze.

“Nathan, if you are reading this, then I have already lost.”

He continued.

“But before you judge me, you need to understand one thing.”

A pause.

“I did not try to destroy Lily.”

Nathan frowned.

The next sentence appeared.

“I tried to save her from the person who truly wanted her gone.”

Nathan stopped.

Because below it was a name.

A name that made no sense.

A name that belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had been helping him.

Someone who had always claimed to be on his side.

The letter ended with:

“The person who wanted Lily erased was not a Hargrove.”

“It was a Cole.”

Nathan stared at the page.

May you like

Because after everything…

The enemy was still inside his own family.
