CHAPTER 9: THE SHOT IN THE DARK

The sound of the gunshot continued to echo through the library long after it happened.
One second.
Two seconds.
Three seconds.
Nobody moved.
Because the human mind needs time to accept impossible things.
And what I was seeing was impossible.
My father.
Charles Whitmore.
The man who had survived corporate wars, political attacks, and enemies powerful enough to destroy entire companies…
Was lying on the floor.
Blood spread slowly across the white carpet beneath him.
“Dad!”
I dropped beside him.
For the first time in years, I forgot about Adrian.
I forgot about Andrew.
I forgot about every secret that had exploded around me.
There was only one thought.
My father was hurt.
“Dad, open your eyes.”
My hands trembled as I pressed against the wound.
His eyes opened slightly.
“Evelyn…”
His voice was weak.
“I’m okay.”
“No, you’re not.”
My voice broke.
“You were shot.”
He tried to smile.
A small, stubborn smile.
“Your mother would have hated seeing you cry.”
The mention of my mother almost destroyed me.
“Don’t talk.”
I looked toward the door.
“Someone call emergency services!”
Security rushed into the room.
The estate that had always been controlled and silent suddenly became chaos.
Guards searched every hallway.
Employees whispered.
Phones rang.
But one person was missing.
Andrew Mercer.
The man who had walked into my life carrying the truth.
The man who claimed he wanted to expose the past.
The man who disappeared the moment a bullet entered my father’s body.
My mind immediately returned to one question.
Was he the shooter?
Or was he running from the real one?
Forty minutes later, my father was transported to Whitmore Medical Center.
A private hospital owned by my family.
A place designed for emergencies involving powerful people.
But tonight, the walls felt colder than any public hospital.
I sat outside the operating room.
My hands still had my father’s blood on them.
I stared at them.
Because those hands had signed divorce papers.
Those hands had held Adrian’s face.
Those hands had worn a wedding ring.
And tonight…
Those same hands had tried to save my father.
Life had a cruel way of reminding people what truly mattered.
A doctor finally stepped out.
I immediately stood.
“How is he?”
The doctor removed his mask.
“The bullet missed his heart.”
I exhaled.
“He’s lucky.”
But the doctor’s expression remained serious.
“However…”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“He lost a lot of blood.”
“Will he be okay?”
The doctor looked toward the operating room.
“We won’t know until he wakes up.”
I nodded slowly.
Then another voice spoke behind me.
“He wouldn’t have been there if I hadn’t called him.”
I turned.
Adrian.
Standing at the end of the hallway.
For a moment…
I felt everything return.
The pain.
The betrayal.
The anger.
He looked different.
No expensive suit confidence.
No arrogant smile.
No businessman pretending to control everything.
Just a tired man standing in a hospital hallway.
“You came.”
The words came out colder than I intended.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because I needed to see if he was alive.”
I almost laughed.
“Your concern surprises me.”
His expression tightened.
“I deserve that.”
That answer caught me off guard.
Because Adrian Vale rarely admitted fault.
“I know what I did.”
His voice was quiet.
“I know what I became.”
I looked away.
“Knowing doesn’t fix it.”
“I know.”
Again.
That word.
I hated how sincere it sounded.
“How did you get here?”
He hesitated.
Then answered.
“Andrew called me.”
My eyes moved back to him.
“What?”
“He told me to come.”
“Andrew Mercer?”
Adrian nodded.
“Before the shooting.”
A chill moved through me.
“What did he say?”
Adrian looked down.
“He said…”
He swallowed.
“‘Your wife finally knows the truth. Now you need to decide if you’re going to protect her or protect yourself.’”
I stared at him.
“Why would he say that?”
“Because he knows something.”
“What?”
Adrian looked at the operating room door.
“Something about my father.”
Silence.
Then I asked:
“Where is he?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t know.”
“You were with him?”
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
He looked at me.
And for the first time…
I saw fear.
Real fear.
“Because I found something.”
My heart slowed.
“What?”
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Brown.
Similar to the letter my mother wrote.
“I found this in my father’s old storage facility.”
He handed it to me.
I looked at the handwriting.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized it.
My mother.
“Where did you get this?”
“Hidden inside a wall.”
I looked at him.
“Why would your father have a letter from my mother?”
Adrian’s face became painful.
“I don’t know.”
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Another letter.
But this one was not written to me.
It was written to Adrian.
My eyes moved across the first line.
Adrian,
If you are reading this, then Andrew failed to keep you away from the truth.
I looked at Adrian.
He went pale.
I continued.
I know you believe your father is a monster.
Maybe he is.
But you need to know something.
The night your father disappeared, he did not run.
My heartbeat increased.
He was trying to save someone.
I looked at Adrian.
His expression changed.
Save someone?
Who?
The letter continued.
Your father discovered who was responsible for the accident.
My hands tightened.
He wanted to expose them.
But someone stopped him.
The next sentence made both of us freeze.
The person who tried to kill me was not Andrew Mercer.
I stopped reading.
Adrian looked at me.
“Keep going.”
I continued.
The person who betrayed us was someone we trusted.
Someone who had access to both families.
Someone who knew exactly how to make everyone blame Andrew.
The page ended.
No name.
Again.
Another incomplete truth.
I looked at Adrian.
“Why does every secret end before the answer?”
He didn’t respond.
Because he was thinking the same thing.
Then his phone rang.
He looked down.
A message.
His face changed.
“What?”
I watched him.
“What happened?”
He turned the screen toward me.
It was a photo.
A security camera image.
Taken inside the Whitmore estate.
The library.
Minutes before the shooting.
And standing behind my father…
Was someone neither of us expected.
Someone who had been in our lives the entire time.
Someone who had a reason to hide the truth.
My heart stopped.
Because the person in the image was:
My father’s most trusted advisor.
The man who had worked beside Charles Whitmore for twenty-five years.
The man who knew every secret.
Every account.
Every weakness.
Adrian whispered:
“Evelyn…”
I looked at him.
“That man…”
His voice lowered.
“He was also my father’s lawyer twenty years ago.”
The hospital hallway suddenly felt colder.
Because the enemy was not outside our families.
The enemy had been invited inside.
May you like
And while my father fought for his life…
The person who tried to erase the truth was already preparing his next move:
