CHAPTER 19: THE MAN WHO SAVED ME FROM HIMSELF

The photograph slipped from my fingers.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the impossible had become real.
Andrew Mercer was alive.
And somehow…
He had been protecting me.
The same man everyone believed was the villain.
The same man my family blamed for destroying our lives.
The same man who had disappeared twenty years ago.
I stared at the photograph.
My mother.
Andrew.
A newborn child.
And the date.
A date proving Andrew Mercer had survived long after everyone believed he was gone.
“How?”
My voice barely escaped.
“How is this possible?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was asking the same question.
Adrian slowly took the photograph from my hand.
His face had completely changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Confusion.
“My father…”
He whispered.
“He was alive.”
Ethan stood frozen.
For the first time since I met him…
He looked lost.
“My entire life…”
His voice cracked.
“I hated a man who was still watching us?”
Nobody responded.
Because that was the cruelest part.
The truth did not simply reveal villains.
Sometimes it revealed that everyone had been wrong.
My father sat down slowly.
His wound had weakened him.
But the emotional pain was greater.
“I knew he survived.”
Everyone turned toward him.
I felt my heart drop.
“You knew?”
Charles Whitmore looked at me.
His eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.”
The anger returned immediately.
“Again?”
My voice became sharp.
“Another secret?”
“Evelyn…”
“No.”
I stepped away.
“I am tired of hearing that you were protecting me.”
My eyes filled.
“Everyone has been protecting me from the truth.”
I pointed toward the photograph.
“But every secret brought me closer to the same pain.”
My father lowered his head.
“I thought Andrew would come back for you.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed you were his daughter.”
I looked at him.
“But I’m not.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“That is what made it worse.”
Silence.
“Andrew knew the truth.”
My heartbeat increased.
“What truth?”
My father looked at Adrian.
Then Ethan.
Then me.
“He knew you were not his daughter.”
The room froze.
“What?”
My father continued.
“He discovered the DNA test was fake years ago.”
“Then why did he protect me?”
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Because he knew something.”
We looked at him.
“What?”
Adrian stared at the photograph.
“My father always said one thing.”
A pause.
“Blood is not the only thing that makes someone family.”
My eyes moved toward him.
“Where did he say that?”
“When I was young.”
Adrian looked down.
“I thought it was meaningless.”
A sad smile appeared.
“But maybe he was talking about you.”
The room became quiet.
Then Ethan suddenly stepped forward.
“I need to tell you something.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
He looked ashamed.
“Martin was not the one who brought me back.”
My father frowned.
“What?”
Ethan continued.
“Andrew contacted me.”
My eyes widened.
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Adrian stared.
“Why?”
Ethan looked at him.
“To stop me.”
Silence.
“You?”
Ethan nodded.
“I wanted revenge.”
His voice became heavy.
“I believed Adrian stole everything from me.”
A pause.
“But Andrew showed me the truth.”
“What truth?”
Ethan looked at me.
“That Adrian was never the enemy.”
I looked at Adrian.
The irony hurt.
Because the man I once saw as my greatest betrayal…
Had also been manipulated.
Just like everyone else.
“Then why didn’t Andrew come forward?”
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“Because he was dying.”
The room became silent.
“What?”
Ethan nodded.
“Andrew had cancer.”
My heart tightened.
“He knew he didn’t have much time.”
“Then why hide?”
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Ethan looked at me.
“Of destroying the only family you had left.”
The answer hurt.
Because suddenly Andrew Mercer was no longer a monster.
He was a man who had spent twenty years living with the consequences of his mistakes.
A man who knew revealing himself could destroy me.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Because only one person would call now.
Andrew.
Adrian answered immediately.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then Adrian’s face changed.
“He’s alive.”
I moved closer.
“What?”
Adrian put the phone on speaker.
An old voice came through.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“Adrian.”
Nobody breathed.
“Dad?”
Andrew Mercer laughed softly.
“I never thought I would hear you call me that again.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere I should have gone twenty years ago.”
My hands tightened.
“Why did you hide?”
A long silence.
Then Andrew answered.
“Because I failed.”
The words shocked everyone.
Andrew Mercer admitting failure.
“I failed your mother.”
A pause.
“I failed you.”
Another pause.
“I failed Ethan.”
Ethan looked away.
Andrew continued.
“And I refused to fail Evelyn.”
My heart stopped.
“Why me?”
His voice softened.
“Because your mother asked me.”
Silence.
“She knew the truth before anyone.”
“What truth?”
Andrew took a breath.
“The night she died…”
Everyone became still.
“I was not trying to kill her.”
“Then what happened?”
“She called me.”
My father closed his eyes.
“She asked me to help her escape.”
Escape.
From who?
Andrew continued.
“She discovered Martin’s plan.”
My blood ran cold.
“Martin?”
“Yes.”
“He wanted control over both families.”
“He wanted Charles’ empire.”
“He wanted my empire.”
A pause.
“And he wanted Evelyn because she was the connection between everything.”
My breathing slowed.
“Then who was driving the car?”
Silence.
Everyone waited.
Andrew finally answered.
“The driver was…”
The line suddenly became distorted.
A loud noise.
Then silence.
“Andrew?”
No answer.
“Andrew!”
The call ended.
Everyone stood frozen.
Then Adrian looked at his phone.
A message appeared.
Not from Andrew.
From Martin.
One sentence.
“You finally reached him.”
Another message appeared.
“Now ask yourself why he chose to save Evelyn instead of his own son.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Because that question hurt.
Not because it was true.
Because it was designed to destroy him.
Then another message arrived.
This time with a location.
And a photo.
Andrew Mercer.
Alive.
Sitting in a small cabin.
And beside him…
Was a woman.
An older woman.
A woman everyone believed had died twenty years ago.
My mother.
My hands began shaking.
“No…”
Impossible.
But there she was.
Alive.
And underneath the photograph was one final sentence:
“The dead woman you mourned for twenty years has been alive all along.”
Nobody spoke.
Because the greatest secret had finally been revealed.
My mother was alive.
And if that was true…
Then everything we knew about the accident…
May you like
Everything we knew about the past…
Was a lie:
