CHAPTER 17: THE BLOOD THAT WASN’T MINE

The sentence on the desk felt like it had been carved into my soul.

“The daughter of Charles Whitmore was never Charles Whitmore’s daughter.”

I read it again.

And again.

But the words did not change.

They remained there.

Cold.

Cruel.

Impossible.

My entire life had been built around one truth.

I was Evelyn Whitmore.

Daughter of Charles Whitmore.

He was the man who raised me.

The man who protected me.

The man who held my hand after my mother died.

The man who told me I was the only thing in this world he could never lose.

And now…

Someone was saying he was not my father.

“Dad…”

My voice barely came out.

I turned toward Charles.

His face had lost all color.

Not because he was confused.

Because he knew.

That was the part that destroyed me.

He knew.

“Tell me this is a lie.”

The room became silent.

Adrian stood frozen beside me.

Ethan looked between us.

Even Vanessa, who had spent months manipulating everyone, looked shocked.

My father slowly closed his eyes.

And that was the moment my heart broke.

Because silence was an answer.

“Dad.”

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

He looked at me.

And the pain in his eyes was worse than any confession.

“Evelyn…”

“No.”

My voice became sharper.

“Not another secret.”

I shook my head.

“I am done being protected by lies.”

My father lowered his eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

I laughed bitterly.

“When I was forty?”

“When I was old enough to handle it?”

“After you had spent my entire life letting me believe something that wasn’t true?”

My father said nothing.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Evelyn…”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He stopped.

“Not you.”

My voice trembled.

“Everyone knew something except me.”

I looked around the room.

“My husband.”

“My father.”

“Andrew.”

“Martin.”

“Everyone.”

A tear fell from my eye.

“And I was the only person living inside a lie.”

No one spoke.

Then my father finally said:

“You are my daughter.”

The words confused me.

I stared.

“What?”

He took a breath.

“Your blood may not come from me.”

A pause.

“But you are my daughter.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

My voice broke.

“Who is my father?”

My father looked away.

And that hesitation told me everything.

There was a name.

A person.

A truth he had buried.

“Dad.”

He finally whispered:

“Your biological father was…”

Before he could finish—

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone froze.

Again.

The same pattern.

The same warning.

Someone was controlling the situation.

Then the television screen inside the hidden room turned on.

A video began playing.

Martin Keene appeared.

Sitting in a dark room.

Vanessa beside him.

Her face was different now.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

Only fear.

Martin smiled at the camera.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

My hands tightened.

“Martin.”

His voice continued.

“I know Charles is about to tell you a story.”

A pause.

“But before he does…”

He leaned closer.

“I want you to hear the truth from me.”

My father stepped forward.

“Turn it off.”

But nobody moved.

Martin continued.

“Twenty years ago, your mother was not running from Andrew Mercer.”

“She was running from Charles Whitmore.”

The room went silent.

My father looked devastated.

“That’s not true.”

Martin smiled.

“Isn’t it?”

The video changed.

Documents appeared.

Old records.

Medical files.

DNA reports.

My breathing became heavier.

“Evelyn…”

Adrian whispered.

I ignored him.

The screen showed a DNA test.

A name.

A result.

I could barely read it.

But I saw enough.

Charles Whitmore — Excluded.

My knees almost weakened.

“No.”

My father stepped toward me.

“Evelyn, listen—”

I moved away.

“Don’t.”

The word hurt him.

But I needed space.

I needed air.

Martin’s voice continued.

“Your mother loved Charles.”

A pause.

“But she made one mistake.”

“She trusted him with a child that wasn’t his.”

I looked at the screen.

“Who?”

The video showed another document.

Another name.

And when I saw it…

Everything stopped.

Because the name belonged to the one person nobody expected.

Andrew Mercer.

My stomach turned.

No.

Not possible.

My mother.

Andrew Mercer.

The man my family hated.

The man connected to every tragedy.

“He is lying.”

Adrian said immediately.

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

His expression changed.

Because he realized he had no proof.

Martin continued.

“Your mother never told Charles because she knew what Andrew would do.”

“She knew he would use Evelyn as a connection between two empires.”

“She knew he would turn her daughter into a weapon.”

My father closed his eyes.

And suddenly…

I understood.

My mother had not hidden me from Andrew.

She had hidden me from everyone.

Because I was the one thing everyone wanted.

The bridge between two powerful families.

The person who could unite them.

Or destroy them.

The video continued.

“But Charles made another mistake.”

Martin smiled.

“He believed raising Evelyn would erase the truth.”

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

“Evelyn Whitmore was never the daughter of one empire.”

A pause.

“She was the heir to two.”

The video ended.

Silence.

No one moved.

Then I looked at my father.

“Is it true?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know what part you mean.”

My anger exploded.

“Everything!”

I stepped closer.

“Is Andrew Mercer my father?”

My father looked broken.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Ethan looked away.

And I felt like the ground beneath me had disappeared.

My whole life.

My name.

My family.

My identity.

Everything changed in one sentence.

I looked at my father.

“Why?”

His voice shook.

“Because your mother begged me.”

“Begged you?”

“She knew Andrew would never let you live normally.”

“She knew he would use you.”

“So she asked me to become your father.”

I stared.

“And you agreed?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The answer came immediately.

“Because I loved her.”

A painful silence.

“And because I loved you.”

I looked away.

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to be angry.

But all I saw was the man who raised me.

The man who taught me to walk.

The man who stayed awake beside my hospital bed when I was sick.

The man who gave me a life.

Even if he was not my biological father.

Then Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

His face was pale.

“There’s something wrong.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

Ethan looked at the video screen.

“Martin lied.”

I stared.

“Why?”

Ethan looked at me.

“Because I know my father.”

A pause.

“And Andrew Mercer never had a daughter.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Your mother was hiding something else.”

My father looked alarmed.

“Ethan.”

“No.”

His voice became serious.

“Twenty years ago, Andrew believed Evelyn was his daughter.”

A pause.

“But then he discovered something.”

“What?”

Ethan looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

“He discovered that the DNA test was fake.”

The room froze.

“What are you saying?”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“Your mother lied.”

Silence.

“Andrew Mercer may not be your father.”

My heartbeat stopped.

“Then who is?”

Ethan looked toward the hidden door.

The one Martin escaped through.

And whispered:

“The real person who knows…”

“Is the man who created the fake DNA test.”

A pause.

“And he has been beside your family for twenty years.”

My blood turned cold.

Because there was only one person left.

One person connected to every secret.

Every lie.

Every disappearance.

The person who had access to all the records.

The person who knew the truth before anyone else.

Martin Keene.

But Martin was gone.

And now…

The only question was:

May you like

Was he hiding the truth?

Or was he the truth?
