CHAPTER 10: THE MAN WHO STOOD BESIDE US ALL ALONG

The photograph remained on Adrian’s phone screen.

A single image.

A single moment.

Yet it changed everything.

Because the man standing behind my father in that photograph was not a stranger.

Not an enemy we had never met.

Not some hidden criminal operating from the shadows.

He was someone who had been sitting at our family table.

Someone who knew our birthdays.

Someone who attended my wedding.

Someone who had held my father’s trust for twenty-five years.

Martin Keene.

My father’s closest advisor.

His right hand.

The man who knew every financial decision Charles Whitmore had ever made.

I stared at the image.

My mind refused to accept it.

“No.”

The word escaped my mouth.

Adrian looked at me.

“You know him.”

I nodded slowly.

“Everyone knows him.”

“Tell me who he is.”

I looked at the photograph again.

“Martin Keene.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Because Martin had always been there.

He was the man who helped my father organize charity events.

The man who attended family dinners.

The man who brought me gifts when I was younger.

The man who told me after my mother died that I would always have a family protecting me.

The thought made my stomach turn.

Because now I wondered…

Was he protecting me?

Or was he protecting himself?

“He was with my father the night my mother died.”

Adrian became silent.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“My father trusted him more than anyone.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Then we need to find him.”

I nodded.

But before we could move…

The hospital lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then returned.

A strange feeling crawled over me.

Not fear.

Something else.

The feeling of being watched.

I looked down the hallway.

Nothing.

Only doctors.

Nurses.

Security.

People moving through the hospital.

But I knew something.

People like Andrew Mercer and Martin Keene did not survive for decades by making careless mistakes.

Someone was always watching.

Someone was always planning.

“Evelyn.”

Adrian’s voice brought me back.

“What?”

“We need to talk.”

I looked at him.

“About what?”

“About Vanessa.”

The name immediately changed the atmosphere.

I crossed my arms.

“What about her?”

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

For once, he wasn’t angry.

He was ashamed.

“I found something.”

“What?”

He took a deep breath.

“Vanessa never met me by accident.”

I stared.

“What do you mean?”

“She approached me.”

I frowned.

“Of course she did.”

“No.”

His voice became serious.

“You don’t understand.”

He looked toward the hospital windows.

“She knew things about me before we ever met.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What things?”

“My past.”

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Andrew?”

“Yes.”

I studied his face.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He looked down.

“Because I was ashamed.”

The answer surprised me.

“I spent my entire life running away from my father.”

He paused.

“But somehow, I became the person I hated.”

I remained silent.

Because part of me wanted to believe him.

Another part remembered the marble floor.

The pain.

The betrayal.

“I thought I could control everything.”

He continued.

“My company.”

“My reputation.”

“My marriage.”

His voice became quieter.

“And then I realized Vanessa knew exactly how to manipulate me.”

I looked at him.

“Are you saying she used you?”

“Yes.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“The worst part is…”

He looked at me.

“I let her.”

Silence.

For the first time, Adrian was not blaming someone else.

He was looking at himself.

And that was something I never saw during our marriage.

“I found messages between Vanessa and someone else.”

My expression changed.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did they say?”

Adrian pulled out his phone.

He showed me screenshots.

The conversation was encrypted.

But some messages were visible.

The wife knows too much.

Make sure Adrian trusts you.

The Whitmore girl cannot discover the truth.

My heart tightened.

“The Whitmore girl.”

I whispered.

“They were talking about me.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who sent those messages?”

“I’m trying to find out.”

I looked at him.

“You mean you don’t know?”

“No.”

For a moment, I saw the same frustration I felt.

The feeling of being surrounded by people with secrets.

Then Adrian said something unexpected.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

The apology came so quietly that I almost missed it.

“For what?”

“For everything.”

I said nothing.

He continued.

“I was cruel.”

“Yes.”

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I believed the worst things about you because someone else told me what I wanted to hear.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Don’t blame Vanessa for everything.”

“I’m not.”

His answer was immediate.

“I made the choices.”

That was the first thing he said that sounded like accountability.

But forgiveness was not something he could request.

It was something he had to earn.

Before I could respond…

A nurse suddenly rushed toward us.

“Ms. Whitmore?”

I stood immediately.

“What happened?”

The nurse looked nervous.

“Your father woke up.”

My heart jumped.

“Is he okay?”

“He’s asking for you.”

I followed her toward the room.

Adrian stayed behind.

For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t come.

Then he followed.

Inside the private room, my father looked smaller.

That was something I had never imagined.

Charles Whitmore was always larger than life.

But lying in that hospital bed…

He was simply my father.

“Evelyn.”

His voice was weak.

I immediately held his hand.

“I’m here.”

His eyes moved toward Adrian.

The expression changed instantly.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

“Adrian.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

My father looked at him.

“You have no idea what you married into.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“I’m starting to understand.”

My father looked at me.

“Did you find the letter?”

I froze.

“You knew?”

A painful silence.

Then my father nodded.

“Yes.”

I felt hurt again.

“Dad…”

“I know.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know I failed you.”

The words were difficult for him.

“But there is something you need to know.”

I leaned closer.

“What?”

He looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

“The person who attacked me…”

My heartbeat increased.

“Was not Martin.”

I froze.

“What?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What do you mean?”

My father’s breathing became heavier.

“Martin was there.”

“Then why isn’t he the shooter?”

My father looked terrified.

Because what he said next changed everything.

“Because Martin was trying to stop him.”

Silence.

The room went completely quiet.

Adrian frowned.

“Stop who?”

My father looked at me.

And his eyes filled with fear.

“The person who pulled the trigger…”

A pause.

“Was someone you both know.”

I felt cold.

“Who?”

My father squeezed my hand.

Then whispered the name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Adrian step backward.

A name that proved the enemy was much closer than we thought.

“Vanessa.”

I stared.

“No.”

My father nodded.

“She was not working alone.”

Adrian’s face became pale.

“Then who was she working with?”

My father closed his eyes.

And with the last strength he had, he said:

“The man who has been controlling her from the beginning…”

A pause.

“Is the same man who destroyed both our families twenty years ago.”

The monitor beside him began beeping faster.

Doctors rushed into the room.

We were forced outside.

Adrian stood beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because both of us knew.

Andrew Mercer had returned.

But he was not the mastermind.

He was only one piece of a much bigger game.

And somewhere in the shadows…

The real person who had planned everything was still watching.

Then my phone received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“Your father lied to you again.”

My breath stopped.

Another message appeared.

“Ask him why your mother was carrying another man’s child when she died.”

I stared at the screen.

And suddenly…

The mystery was no longer about who killed my mother.

May you like

It was about the secret my mother had died protecting.

A secret that could destroy the entire Whitmore family:
