CHAPTER 18: THE LAST LIE OF MARTIN KEENE

The room remained silent after Ethan finished speaking.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that comes when everyone realizes the truth they were chasing was never the truth at all.
For twenty years, everyone had been searching for answers.
Who killed my mother?
Why did Andrew Mercer disappear?
Why did Martin Keene betray us?
Why did Adrian hide what he knew?
But now…
A much bigger question had appeared.
Who was I?
I looked at the people around me.
My father.
The man who raised me.
Adrian.
The man who loved me and destroyed me.
Ethan.
The man who had spent years believing he was abandoned.
And somewhere out there…
Martin.
The man who had controlled all of them.
“You’re saying the DNA test was fake?”
My voice was quiet.
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
His expression changed.
Because the answer was not simple.
“Because I saw the original file.”
My father looked at him.
“Where?”
“In my father’s private archive.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“My father kept records?”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Andrew recorded everything.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“He trusted nobody.”
That sounded exactly like the man everyone described.
A man who controlled everything.
A man who believed secrets were weapons.
“What did the original file say?”
I asked.
Ethan looked at me.
“That your mother was not trying to hide you from Andrew.”
A pause.
“She was trying to hide you from Martin.”
The room became colder.
My father looked confused.
“Why?”
Ethan answered:
“Because Martin knew something.”
“What?”
“That Andrew was not the only dangerous man in the room.”
I closed my eyes.
Another layer.
Another secret.
It felt like every answer only created more questions.
“What did Martin know?”
Ethan looked toward the door where Martin disappeared.
“He knew who your real father was.”
My heart tightened.
“And?”
“He used that information to control everyone.”
Adrian frowned.
“How?”
Ethan looked at him.
“He convinced you that your father abandoned you.”
A pause.
“He convinced Charles that protecting Evelyn meant hiding the truth.”
Another pause.
“And he convinced me that everyone betrayed me.”
The realization was painful.
Martin had not created chaos.
He had studied it.
He found every person's weakness.
Then he used it.
My father's weakness was guilt.
Adrian's weakness was insecurity.
Ethan's weakness was abandonment.
And mine…
Was trust.
The one thing I gave too easily.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone turned.
Unknown number.
Again.
I stared at the screen.
“Answer it.”
My father whispered.
I hesitated.
Then accepted.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
Martin.
“Hello, Evelyn.”
My entire body became tense.
“Where are you?”
A soft laugh.
“Still asking the wrong questions.”
My anger rose.
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
“You manipulated everyone.”
“I revealed what was already broken.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“You lied about my identity.”
“No.”
A pause.
“I protected the truth.”
“Then tell me.”
Silence.
“Tell me who my father is.”
Martin laughed quietly.
“I knew that would be the first thing you asked.”
“Answer me.”
Another pause.
Then:
“Your mother loved three men in her life.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Your biological father.”
“Your adoptive father.”
“And the man who thought he deserved her.”
The meaning was clear.
Andrew.
Charles.
Martin.
My stomach tightened.
“My mother loved you?”
A strange sadness entered his voice.
“She understood me.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No.”
He admitted.
“It wasn’t.”
For the first time…
Martin sounded human.
Not like a mastermind.
Not like a villain.
Just a broken man.
“She never chose me.”
A pause.
“And I spent twenty years trying to punish everyone who did.”
I said nothing.
Because there was something disturbing about hearing him admit it.
He knew.
He knew he was wrong.
And he continued anyway.
“Martin.”
My father stepped closer.
“Why did you kill her?”
The phone became silent.
I looked at my father.
Then at the phone.
Finally, Martin answered.
“I didn’t.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
My father whispered.
“I did not kill your wife, Charles.”
“Then who did?”
Another silence.
Then Martin said:
“The person who benefited most from her death.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Martin did not answer.
Instead, he said:
“Evelyn, look behind the old portrait in the room.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The portrait of your mother.”
Everyone looked around.
At the far wall was an old painting.
A portrait of my mother.
My father immediately walked toward it.
“No.”
His voice changed.
“What?”
He touched the frame.
Then stopped.
“What is it?”
He looked at me.
“I never noticed.”
A hidden compartment.
Behind my mother’s portrait.
My father opened it.
Inside was a small metal box.
Old.
Locked.
But the key was attached.
My hands trembled.
Because my mother had hidden it.
Not my father.
Not Andrew.
Not Martin.
My mother.
I opened the box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And one final letter.
This one was addressed:
To Evelyn.
My breathing stopped.
I unfolded it.
My dearest Evelyn,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.
I continued.
I need you to understand something.
Your father is not the man everyone thinks.
I looked at Charles.
My father looked terrified.
The letter continued.
The man who raised you loves you.
A tear fell from my eye.
But the man who gave you life is someone else.
I kept reading.
I could not tell you because the moment the truth became public, you would become a target.
My hands shook.
Then came the sentence that changed everything:
Your biological father is not Andrew Mercer.
The room froze.
Ethan looked shocked.
Adrian stepped closer.
I continued.
Your father is the one person who spent twenty years protecting you from the truth.
My heart stopped.
Who?
Who had protected me?
The final line of the letter was written larger.
As if my mother wanted to make sure I never missed it.
Evelyn, your father is…
The ink stopped.
The letter was incomplete.
Torn.
Again.
Someone had removed the final answer.
I screamed in frustration.
“Why does everyone keep taking the truth away from me?”
Nobody answered.
Then my father suddenly looked at the documents inside the box.
His face changed.
“What?”
I looked at him.
“What is it?”
He picked up a photograph.
His hands were shaking.
“Impossible.”
“What?”
He handed it to me.
The photograph showed my mother.
Holding a newborn baby.
But this time…
There was a man standing beside her.
Not Andrew.
Not Charles.
Someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had been protecting me my entire life.
I stared at the photograph.
And my heart stopped.
Because the man standing beside my mother…
Was Adrian’s father.
Andrew Mercer.
But written on the back of the photograph was a date.
A date after Andrew Mercer was supposed to be dead.
Then a second message appeared on my phone.
From Martin.
One final sentence:
“Now you know why I had to disappear.”
I looked at Adrian.
His face was pale.
Because he understood what I understood.
Andrew Mercer had never been hiding from us.
He had been hiding the fact that he was alive.
And the biggest secret of all…
May you like
Was not who my father was.
It was why Andrew Mercer had spent twenty years protecting me.
