CHAPTER 11: THE CHILD MY MOTHER HID

The message on my phone burned into my mind.
“Ask him why your mother was carrying another man’s child when she died.”
For several seconds, I could not breathe.
The hospital hallway around me disappeared.
The voices of doctors.
The footsteps of nurses.
The machines beeping behind the emergency room door.
Everything became distant.
There was only one sentence.
One impossible accusation.
My mother.
Pregnant.
With another man’s child.
I looked at Adrian.
He had read the message too.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
Neither of us knew what to say.
Because this was not another business secret.
Not another hidden investment.
Not another lie about money.
This was my mother.
The woman whose memory had shaped my entire life.
The woman I had spent years believing was the purest person I knew.
“No.”
The word escaped my lips.
Adrian looked at me.
“Evelyn…”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.”
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew there were some wounds that logic could not immediately heal.
“My mother died when I was young.”
My voice became unsteady.
“She had me.”
I looked at the phone.
“She only had me.”
Adrian remained silent.
And somehow that silence hurt.
“You believe it?”
I asked.
His eyes moved toward mine.
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
“I don’t.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent this message wants you to react emotionally.”
He stepped closer.
“They want you to doubt everyone.”
I looked away.
“But what if it’s true?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because that was the question both of us feared.
What if it was true?
What if the perfect image I had of my mother was only another carefully protected illusion?
A door opened.
My father’s doctor stepped outside.
“Ms. Whitmore?”
I immediately turned.
“How is my father?”
“He’s stable.”
I released the breath I didn’t realize I was holding.
“But he is asking for you.”
I looked at Adrian.
Then back at the doctor.
“I’ll go alone.”
Adrian understood.
He nodded.
“I’ll wait here.”
For once…
He did not argue.
He did not demand answers.
He simply accepted my decision.
I walked into my father’s room.
The lights were dim.
The machines were quieter now.
My father opened his eyes when he saw me.
“Evelyn.”
I sat beside him.
“Dad.”
He looked at my face.
And immediately knew.
“What happened?”
I wanted to lie.
I wanted to protect him.
But I was tired of secrets.
I held up my phone.
His eyes moved to the screen.
And the moment he read the message…
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Who sent this?”
I studied him.
“You know.”
His silence answered before his words did.
“Dad.”
My voice shook.
“Was my mother pregnant?”
He closed his eyes.
A painful silence filled the room.
Then he whispered:
“Yes.”
The word shattered something inside me.
I stood frozen.
For twenty years, I had believed I knew my family.
I believed I knew my history.
But every day since Adrian hurt me…
Another piece of my life had turned into a lie.
“How long did you know?”
My father opened his eyes.
“Since the beginning.”
I stepped backward.
“You knew?”
His voice became weak.
“Evelyn, listen to me.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You knew my entire life that my mother had another child?”
His face showed pain.
“There was no child.”
I stopped.
“What?”
He took a breath.
“Your mother was pregnant.”
“Then—”
“She lost the baby.”
The room became silent.
I looked at him.
“Before she died?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
My anger became mixed with confusion.
“Then why would someone send me that?”
My father looked away.
“Because they want you to believe something else.”
“What?”
His eyes met mine.
“That your mother betrayed me.”
I frowned.
“She didn’t?”
“No.”
His answer was firm.
“Your mother never betrayed our family.”
“Then who was the father?”
My father hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than anything.
Because even now…
He was still choosing what to tell me.
“Dad.”
He looked exhausted.
“The father was…”
The door suddenly opened.
Adrian walked in.
My father immediately stopped speaking.
I turned.
“What are you doing here?”
His expression was serious.
“Security found something.”
“What?”
He looked at my father.
“Someone accessed the hospital system.”
My father’s face changed.
“What?”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Someone deleted medical records from twenty years ago.”
My blood ran cold.
“Which records?”
He looked at me.
“Your mother’s.”
Silence.
My father gripped the blanket.
“They found out.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
But before he answered…
The lights in the hospital room suddenly went out.
Again.
Just like the library.
Darkness swallowed everything.
A second later…
The emergency lights turned on.
But something was wrong.
The door to my father’s room was open.
The security guard who had been standing outside was unconscious on the floor.
And on my father’s bed…
Was a small envelope.
No name.
No address.
Only one word written on the front.
EVELYN.
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
Adrian moved closer.
“Don’t open it.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because whoever left it here wants you to.”
I stared at the envelope.
He was right.
This was a trap.
But after twenty years of being protected by lies…
I needed the truth.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
My mother.
Standing outside a hospital.
Holding a newborn baby.
My entire body froze.
Because beside her…
Was a man.
A man I recognized immediately.
A man whose face I had seen in old photographs.
A man whose name had haunted my family for twenty years.
Andrew Mercer.
I turned the photograph over.
There was a sentence written on the back.
My hands started shaking.
“Your mother did not die protecting Adrian.”
I looked at Adrian.
Then continued reading.
“She died protecting the child she had with Andrew Mercer.”
The room became silent.
My father looked away.
Adrian stared at the photograph.
And I realized something terrifying.
The secret was not that my mother had another child.
The secret was that the child might have survived.
And if that was true…
Someone had spent twenty years hiding a person who could change everything.
The hospital doors suddenly opened.
A security officer rushed in.
“Mr. Whitmore!”
My father looked up.
“What?”
The officer was pale.
“We checked the security footage.”
“Who entered the room?”
The officer swallowed.
Then looked directly at me.
“It was not an intruder.”
My heart sank.
“Then who?”
The officer hesitated.
And said:
“Someone who still has authorized access to this hospital.”
A pause.
“Someone from the Whitmore family.”
I looked at my father.
He looked terrified.
Adrian stepped forward.
And for the first time…
We both understood.
May you like
The person destroying our families was not hiding outside.
They had been standing beside us the entire time:
