Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING

Clara couldn't move.
The words seemed impossible.
Who killed her?
Her mother had died in a car accident when Clara was four.
At least, that's what she had been told.
A rainy highway.
A truck.
A terrible accident.
No one had ever questioned it.
Not Arthur.
Not the police.
Not even Clara.
Now Daniel was telling her it had never been an accident.
Arthur stood by the window.
His back was turned.
Clara looked at him.
“Dad?”
He didn't respond.
“Did Mom die because someone killed her?”
Arthur finally turned.
His eyes were red.
“I suspected.”
Clara's voice cracked.
“You suspected?”
“I never had proof.”
Daniel spoke quietly.
“You had more than enough reason.”
Arthur looked at him.
“I had a daughter to protect.”
Daniel nodded.
“And Eleanor wanted exactly that.”
Clara placed the cassette on the table.
“Play it.”
Daniel inserted it into an old recorder.
Static filled the room.
Then—
a woman's voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
Clara stopped breathing.
Her mother's voice.
“Daniel, if you're hearing this, then something has happened.”
Clara covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“I don't know how much time I have.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
Eleanor continued.
“Richard knows about the trust.”
Static.
“He knows I moved the assets.”
Another pause.
“He knows about Clara.”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“But he doesn't know the final beneficiary clause.”
Daniel looked at her.
The recording continued.
“If anyone tries to make Clara believe the house belongs to them, she must not fight for the house.”
Clara frowned.
“What?”
Her mother's voice continued.
“Let them believe the house is all she has.”
Arthur stared at the recorder.
“Why would she say that?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Eleanor continued.
“The house is only the visible piece.”
Clara's heart began racing.
“The real assets are elsewhere.”
Static.
“Clara must never sign a transfer.”
Clara looked at the forged document Mark had created.
Her mother's voice continued.
“If my daughter is married when she learns this, trust no one who asks her to sign anything.”
Clara's face went pale.
Mark.
Every sentence suddenly felt like a warning written specifically for him.
Then Eleanor said something that changed everything.
“The person who knows the entire truth is the man I trusted with my life.”
Daniel looked down.
Arthur stared at him.
Eleanor continued:
“Arthur must protect Clara.”
Clara looked at her father.
“But he cannot tell her who her biological father is.”
Arthur's face crumbled.
Clara stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“Because if Richard discovers the truth, Clara becomes the last person capable of destroying everything he built.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Clara slowly turned toward Arthur.
“Who is my father?”
Arthur didn't answer.
“Dad.”
He looked at her.
“I don't know how to tell you.”
“Tell me the truth.”
Arthur swallowed.
“Your biological father was Richard Whitlock.”
Clara stared at him.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Clara backed away.
“Mark's father?”
Arthur nodded.
The room seemed to spin.
“That means…”
Daniel finished the sentence.
“You are Richard Whitlock's daughter.”
Clara stared at the photograph.
Her entire life had just shifted.
Mark wasn't simply her husband.
His father wasn't merely a businessman who had once betrayed her family.
Richard Whitlock was her biological father.
Clara whispered:
“Does Mark know?”
Arthur looked at her.
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“But someone does.”
“Who?”
Daniel pulled another file from his briefcase.
Inside was a photograph of Mark and Evelyn.
Clara's stomach dropped.
“Evelyn.”
Daniel nodded.
“She discovered the truth six months ago.”
Clara's voice became cold.
“How?”
“Mark's brother Ethan found the old records.”
Arthur frowned.
“Why would Ethan investigate?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because Ethan suspected his father had hidden another child.”
Clara stared.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“And Evelyn?”
“She used the information to manipulate Mark.”
Clara remembered the video.
You have to get her out before the baby is born.
Now she understood.
Evelyn hadn't merely wanted Clara gone.
She wanted the trust.
Daniel opened another document.
“The inheritance structure has a succession clause.”
Arthur leaned forward.
“What kind?”
Daniel looked at Clara.
“If you die before the trust matures, the assets pass to your child.”
Clara's blood went cold.
“My baby.”
“Yes.”
Arthur suddenly understood.
“That's why they want her gone.”
Daniel nodded.
“Not just gone.”
He looked at Clara's stomach.
“They need control over the child.”
Clara instinctively stepped backward.
“They would never…”
Daniel interrupted.
“Your husband has already arranged meetings with a private adoption attorney.”
Clara froze.
“What?”
“He intended to claim you were mentally unstable.”
Arthur's face hardened.
“He planned to take the baby.”
Daniel nodded.
“And control the trust through the child.”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“So the eviction…”
“Was step one.”
Daniel placed another folder on the table.
“Step two was a psychiatric evaluation.”
Another.
“Step three was temporary custody.”
Another.
“And step four was transferring the trust.”
Arthur looked at Clara.
“They planned the entire thing.”
Clara wiped her tears.
“Then we stop them.”
Daniel nodded.
But before anyone could speak—
Arthur's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?”
A pause.
“Say that again.”
He listened.
Then looked at Clara.
“Mark is gone.”
Clara froze.
“How?”
Arthur ended the call.
“Security lost him ten minutes ago.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“He wasn't alone.”
Arthur looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel pointed toward the door.
“Evelyn wasn't calling Mark last night.”
“She was calling someone else.”
“Who?”
May you like
Daniel's face turned pale.
“Richard.”
