Chapter 12 - THE LAST MOVE

The hospital was empty when they arrived.

Too empty.

The emergency entrance had been cleared.

Security guards stood at every door.

Arthur stepped out of the SUV first.

“Stay behind me.”

Clara nodded.

She was beginning to recognize the pattern.

Every time Richard wanted something, he created a crisis.

Every crisis forced Clara to move.

Every movement pushed her closer to the place he wanted her.

This time, she refused to play by his rules.

They entered the hospital.

Mark was sitting alone in an examination room.

His shirt was torn.

There was blood on his forehead.

Clara stopped when she saw him.

“Where's my baby?”

Mark looked at her.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Arthur grabbed him by the collar.

“You better start talking.”

Mark raised his hands.

“I was brought here.”

“By whom?”

“Richard.”

Clara stepped forward.

“What did he want?”

Mark looked at her.

“The trust.”

“We have it.”

Mark's face changed.

“You shouldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because that's exactly what he wanted.”

Clara froze.

Mark continued.

“He knew you would find it.”

Arthur stared.

“How?”

Mark swallowed.

“Because Evelyn told him.”

Clara's face hardened.

“Where is Evelyn?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is Richard?”

“I don't know.”

Arthur released him.

Mark collapsed against the wall.

“I thought I could beat him.”

Clara looked at him.

“You thought you could use me.”

Mark lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of losing money?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Of becoming nothing.”

Clara stared.

Mark continued.

“My father spent my entire life telling me that power was the only thing that mattered.”

“And you believed him.”

“Yes.”

“You became him.”

Mark nodded.

“I did.”

For the first time, he looked genuinely ashamed.

“I thought if I controlled the trust, I could finally prove I wasn't weak.”

Clara's voice was cold.

“You destroyed your marriage for that.”

“I know.”

“You tried to take my home.”

“I know.”

“You planned to take my baby.”

Mark closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Clara turned away.

She couldn't forgive him.

Not now.

Maybe not ever.

But there was one thing she needed.

“Where is Richard taking me?”

Mark looked up.

“He doesn't want you at the hospital.”

“Then where?”

“The old Whitlock estate.”

Arthur's expression changed.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“It was demolished fifteen years ago.”

Mark shook his head.

“Not all of it.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“The underground vault.”

Arthur looked at him.

“You knew?”

“I knew it existed.”

Mark nodded.

“My father kept everything there.”

Clara understood.

“The final evidence.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Arthur's phone rang.

A text appeared.

BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST.

Then another.

COME TO THE ESTATE ALONE.

Arthur looked at Clara.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“We don't have to.”

He took out the USB.

“The files are encrypted, but we can create a false copy.”

Arthur understood.

“Bait.”

Clara nodded.

“For the first time, we're going to control the trap.”

They prepared for one hour.

A fake trust was placed inside a briefcase.

The real documents were secured elsewhere.

The security team surrounded the estate.

Clara wore a concealed microphone.

Arthur stayed within range.

Daniel monitored the audio.

At 11:30 p.m., Clara entered the abandoned property.

The old mansion stood in darkness.

She walked through the broken front doors.

“Richard?”

Her voice echoed.

Nothing.

Then a light turned on.

Richard appeared at the end of the hall.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Cold-eyed.

Exactly as she had imagined.

But seeing him in person was different.

He looked at her for a long time.

“You really do have her eyes.”

Clara held the briefcase.

“You killed my mother.”

Richard smiled sadly.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

“You murdered her.”

“She chose her fate.”

Clara's hands tightened.

“You've been manipulating Mark.”

“Yes.”

“Evelyn.”

“She was useful.”

“My father.”

Richard's expression changed.

“Arthur stole my family.”

Clara shook her head.

“You never had one.”

Richard's eyes hardened.

“I am your father.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You are the man whose blood I inherited.”

Her voice became steady.

“You are not the man who raised me.”

Richard stared.

Arthur listened through the hidden microphone.

Richard extended his hand.

“The trust.”

Clara held up the briefcase.

“First, tell me why.”

“Why what?”

“Why did you kill Mom?”

Richard looked away.

Then he whispered:

“Because she chose Arthur.”

Clara's eyes narrowed.

“So this was jealousy.”

“It was betrayal.”

“You were never entitled to her.”

Richard laughed.

“You sound exactly like her.”

“Good.”

Richard suddenly pulled a gun.

Arthur's voice came through Clara's earpiece.

“Don't move.”

Richard pointed it at her.

“Give me the trust.”

Clara looked directly into his eyes.

“You're not getting it.”

Richard stepped closer.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand everything.”

She smiled.

“That's why you're afraid.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

Clara touched her ear.

“The entire conversation is being recorded.”

Richard's face changed.

Arthur's security team burst through the doors.

Richard spun around.

But before he could run—

Mark appeared behind him.

“It's over, Dad.”

Richard stared.

“You?”

Mark stepped forward.

“I gave them everything.”

Richard's face twisted with rage.

“You pathetic coward.”

Mark shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Clara.

“Just a man finally admitting what he did.”

Richard raised the gun.

Security tackled him.

The weapon skidded across the floor.

Richard was restrained.

Clara stood still.

The man who had haunted her family for decades was finally on the ground.

Arthur walked toward her.

He didn't speak.

He simply pulled her into his arms.

Clara cried.

Not because she was afraid.

Because the truth had finally arrived.

But Daniel suddenly shouted:

“Arthur!”

Everyone turned.

Daniel was staring at the security monitor.

“There's another vehicle.”

Arthur frowned.

“Whose?”

Daniel zoomed in.

A black SUV.

Then another.

Then another.

Arthur's expression hardened.

Richard smiled from the floor.

“You thought I came alone?”

Clara's heart sank.

Richard whispered:

“You still don't know what your mother was really hiding.”

And then the mansion's underground vault door began to open.

Slowly.

By itself.

Inside was a single wooden cradle.

And beside it—

a photograph of Eleanor holding a baby.

But the baby wasn't Clara.

Arthur stared at the photograph.

His face turned completely white.

Clara looked at him.

“Dad?”

Arthur couldn't answer.

May you like

Because he recognized the child.

And suddenly the entire story of her family was about to change again.
