Chapter 11 - THE ORIGINAL TRUST

By midnight, the library had become a war room.
Documents covered the table.
Old photographs.
Bank records.
Court filings.
Property deeds.
Everything Eleanor had left behind.
Clara sat in the middle of it all.
She was exhausted.
But she refused to leave.
Arthur studied the original trust documents.
“There has to be a clue.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Eleanor was meticulous.”
“She knew Richard would come after her.”
“Yes.”
“So she would have hidden the original somewhere he could never find.”
Clara looked at the photograph of her mother.
“Where would she hide something important?”
Arthur thought.
“Somewhere ordinary.”
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Maria suddenly spoke.
“Mrs. Clara.”
Clara turned.
“What?”
“Your mother's sewing room.”
Clara frowned.
“What about it?”
“After she died, nobody was allowed to touch the cabinet.”
Arthur looked at her.
“I had forgotten about that.”
They went upstairs.
The sewing room had remained almost untouched for decades.
A dusty machine.
Old fabric.
A wooden cabinet.
Clara opened it.
Nothing.
She checked the drawers.
Nothing.
Maria pointed toward the sewing machine.
“Mrs. Eleanor always kept a red thread underneath it.”
Clara looked.
There was a small wooden compartment.
She opened it.
Inside was a key.
A tiny brass key.
Daniel smiled.
“Of course.”
Arthur looked at him.
“What does it open?”
Clara remembered.
“The old bank box.”
They drove there under heavy security.
The bank was closed.
But Arthur had legal authority over the family trust.
A manager was brought in.
The brass key opened a private safe deposit box.
Inside was a sealed metal container.
Clara's hands shook.
She opened it.
Inside:
The original trust.
A USB drive.
Three photographs.
And one handwritten letter.
Clara opened the letter.
Her mother's handwriting.
My beloved Clara,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally found you.
Clara's eyes filled.
Do not trust anyone who tells you that this inheritance is the most valuable thing I left you.
She looked up.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What?”
Clara continued reading.
The money is only a shield. The evidence is the weapon.
Inside the USB was a video.
They played it.
Eleanor appeared.
But this recording was different.
She was sitting across from Richard.
Young.
Angry.
Terrified.
Richard's voice was clear.
“You think you can hide the accounts?”
Eleanor answered:
“I already did.”
“You're carrying my child.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“And she will never know you.”
Richard slammed his hand on the table.
“She belongs to me.”
“No.”
Eleanor's voice was firm.
“She belongs to herself.”
Richard leaned closer.
“You can't erase me.”
“No.”
Eleanor stared directly at him.
“But I can erase your rights.”
Richard laughed.
“You think Arthur will protect you?”
“He already is.”
Richard's face changed.
Then came the sentence that made Arthur sit down.
“I know what you did to Daniel.”
Daniel went completely still.
Richard answered:
“Daniel is alive.”
The video froze.
Clara turned.
“You knew.”
Daniel's face was pale.
“I suspected.”
Arthur looked at him.
“What did Richard do?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
“He tried to frame me for the financial crimes.”
Clara stared.
“Why?”
“Because I discovered the offshore accounts.”
Arthur understood.
“Daniel was the one who could expose him.”
“Yes.”
The video resumed.
Richard stood up.
“If you don't give me the trust, Clara will never be safe.”
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“She'll be safer without you.”
The recording ended.
Then the final file opened.
A list of bank accounts.
Names.
Dates.
Transfers.
Everything.
Richard's entire financial network.
Including Mark.
Including Evelyn.
Including Blackridge Holdings.
Arthur stared at the screen.
“This is enough to bury all of them.”
Daniel nodded.
“Except there's one problem.”
“What?”
“The files are encrypted.”
Clara frowned.
“Can you open them?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Only your mother's password can unlock the final folder.”
Arthur looked at the letter.
“Did she leave it?”
Clara searched the envelope.
Nothing.
Then she noticed something.
A sentence at the bottom.
The password is the name of the person I trusted most.
Arthur looked at her.
“Me?”
Clara shook her head.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Maybe.”
He typed:
ARTHUR.
Wrong.
He tried:
CLARA.
Wrong.
DANIEL.
Wrong.
Clara suddenly remembered something.
Her mother had called someone by a nickname.
Not Arthur.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
“Mom used to call me…”
She stopped.
Then smiled faintly.
“Little Sparrow.”
Daniel typed it.
The screen unlocked.
A final folder appeared.
RICHARD — MURDER
Arthur stared.
Clara's heart stopped.
Inside were photographs of the damaged car.
Brake components.
Police reports.
And an audio recording.
Daniel pressed play.
Richard's voice.
Clear.
Undeniable.
“The brakes will fail before they reach the bridge.”
A second voice asked:
“What about Eleanor?”
Richard answered:
“She won't survive.”
Clara covered her mouth.
Arthur's eyes closed.
The truth was finally there.
Her mother's death had never been an accident.
Then another recording started.
Richard again.
“But Arthur will.”
The room went silent.
Clara looked at her father.
“He knew you would survive.”
Arthur whispered:
“He wanted me to live with it.”
Clara looked at the screen.
Then the phone rang.
Unknown number.
Daniel answered.
Richard's voice came through.
“You found it.”
Clara stared.
“How?”
Richard laughed.
“Because I wanted you to.”
Daniel's face changed.
“What?”
Richard continued:
“The evidence was never the prize.”
The call ended.
Arthur immediately looked at the security team.
“Find him.”
A guard rushed into the room.
“Sir!”
Arthur turned.
“What?”
“There's a problem.”
“What?”
“Mark has been found.”
Clara's heart jumped.
“Where?”
The guard looked at her.
“At the hospital.”
Clara froze.
“Why is Mark at the hospital?”
The guard hesitated.
“He's not there for himself.”
Arthur's face hardened.
“Then who?”
The guard answered:
“The baby's medical records show an emergency admission.”
Clara's blood ran cold.
“But my baby is here.”
Daniel looked at the phone.
Then at Clara.
“It's a trap.”
Arthur nodded.
“And Mark isn't the target.”
Clara touched her stomach.
“Then who is?”
May you like
Daniel looked at her.
“You are.”
