Chapter 3 - THE LOCKED ROOM

Everyone heard it.
Click.
A door closing upstairs.
Arthur immediately turned toward the staircase.
“Stay here.”
Two security officers followed him.
Mark moved toward the stairs.
Arthur stopped him.
“You stay.”
“But that's my house.”
Arthur's voice was ice.
“Not tonight.”
Clara looked at the envelope again.
Her mother's letter was still in her hand.
She read the final paragraph.
If you are reading this because your husband has tried to make you believe you have nowhere to go, remember this: the house was placed in your name for a reason.
Clara's knees nearly gave out.
Maria caught her arm.
“Mrs. Clara.”
“I’m okay.”
She wasn't.
She looked at Mark.
“You knew.”
He shook his head.
“I didn't know about the letter.”
“But you knew about the trust.”
Mark said nothing.
That was enough.
Clara backed away.
“You lied to me.”
“I was trying to protect us.”
“From what?”
Mark looked toward Arthur.
“From him.”
Arthur returned from the staircase.
“We found the room.”
Mark's expression changed instantly.
Arthur noticed.
“What is it?”
Mark didn't answer.
Arthur looked at security.
“Open it.”
One officer stepped forward.
The door was locked.
He tried the handle.
Nothing.
“Break it.”
Mark shouted.
“No!”
Everyone turned.
Arthur looked at him.
“Why?”
Mark's voice cracked.
“Because you don't understand.”
Arthur smiled.
“Then explain.”
Mark couldn't.
The officer forced the door open.
The room was small.
Dark.
No furniture except a desk.
A computer.
Three filing cabinets.
And a wall covered with photographs.
Clara walked toward it.
Then stopped.
Photographs of her.
Leaving work.
Entering the hospital.
Shopping.
Sleeping in the passenger seat of a car.
Walking with Maria.
Talking to her father.
Her hand instinctively went to her belly.
“Why are there pictures of me?”
Mark didn't answer.
Arthur walked to the desk.
There was a folder.
On it were four words:
PROJECT: CLARA MORRISON
Clara's blood turned cold.
Arthur opened it.
Inside were bank statements.
Property records.
Copies of Clara's passport.
Medical appointment schedules.
And a typed document titled:
EXIT STRATEGY
Arthur read the first page.
Then his expression hardened.
Mark whispered:
“Arthur…”
Arthur looked at him.
“You've been planning this for months.”
Mark shook his head.
“Not like that.”
Arthur threw the folder onto the desk.
“Then what is it?”
Mark stared at the papers.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
“From your pregnant wife?”
“She was going to leave me.”
Clara looked at him.
“When?”
Mark didn't answer.
“When was I going to leave you?”
Silence.
Clara walked closer.
“You know what's funny?”
Mark looked at her.
“I spent months thinking I was losing my mind.”
Her voice trembled.
“I thought maybe I was too emotional.”
She pointed at the photographs.
“But you were watching me.”
Mark lowered his head.
Arthur opened another file.
His expression suddenly changed.
“Clara.”
She looked at him.
“What?”
He held up a bank statement.
“This account isn't yours.”
Mark's eyes widened.
Arthur read the account holder's name.
MORRISON FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY: CLARA MORRISON
Clara stared.
“How much?”
Arthur looked at the balance.
He went silent.
Clara stepped closer.
“How much, Dad?”
Arthur finally answered.
“Thirty-eight million dollars.”
The room went silent.
Mark's face turned white.
Clara looked at him.
“You knew.”
Mark whispered:
“I knew there was money.”
“How much?”
“I didn't know the exact amount.”
Arthur slammed the folder shut.
“You accessed her inheritance.”
Mark shook his head.
“I invested it.”
“Without authorization.”
“I was her husband.”
“That doesn't make it yours.”
Mark's voice became desperate.
“I made that money grow!”
Arthur looked at the statements.
“You transferred almost six million dollars into companies connected to you.”
Mark froze.
Clara stared at him.
“Six million?”
Mark swallowed.
“It wasn't theft.”
Arthur laughed once.
Coldly.
“No?”
He opened another folder.
“This company is owned by your brother.”
Mark said nothing.
Arthur opened another.
“This one is controlled by your mistress.”
Clara froze.
“My what?”
Mark looked at her.
“Clara—”
She whispered:
“Your mistress?”
Mark closed his eyes.
Arthur turned toward him.
“Who is she?”
Mark said nothing.
Clara's voice broke.
“Who is she?”
Then Maria walked into the room.
She was holding her phone.
Her face was pale.
“Mr. Arthur.”
Arthur turned.
“What?”
Maria looked at Clara.
Then Mark.
Then back at Arthur.
“I found something else in the security backup.”
“What?”
Maria held out the phone.
“It isn't just footage of Mr. Mark planning to throw Clara out.”
Arthur took it.
Maria whispered:
“It shows him meeting a woman in this house.”
Clara stared at the screen.
“Who?”
Maria hesitated.
Then pressed play.
The video appeared.
A woman walked into the room.
Her face became visible.
Clara stopped breathing.
Because she knew her.
She had trusted her.
She had invited her into this house.
She had even called her family.
Mark's secret wasn't just an affair.
It was someone much closer.
Someone who had been helping him from inside the house.
And when Clara finally recognized the woman on the screen, she whispered one name:
“Maria…”
Maria's face went white.
“I can explain.”
Arthur slowly turned toward the housekeeper.
May you like
The room went silent.
And Clara realized that the person who had claimed to protect her might have been standing beside her all along for a very different reason.
