Chapter 10 - THE MAN IN THE DARK

The house disappeared into darkness.
For one heartbeat, nobody moved.
Then Clara heard the sound again.
A man's breathing.
Close.
Far too close.
“Hello, daughter.”
Clara's blood turned cold.
Arthur immediately reached for her.
“Stay behind me.”
A flashlight snapped on.
One of the security officers raised it toward the hallway.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
Then another light flickered.
The emergency system was trying to restart.
Arthur looked toward the security team.
“Check the east wing.”
Two men disappeared down the corridor.
Another stayed with Clara.
Maria stood beside the staircase, frozen.
Ethan whispered:
“He's here.”
Arthur turned.
“Where?”
Ethan pointed toward the basement.
“My father always enters through the service tunnel.”
Arthur's expression changed.
“There is no service tunnel.”
Ethan looked at him.
“There was.”
The basement door suddenly slammed shut.
Clara jumped.
Arthur grabbed the handle.
Locked.
“Back away.”
The security officer stepped forward and forced the door open.
The basement was empty.
Except for one thing.
A laptop sat on the floor.
Its screen was glowing.
A video was playing.
Eleanor.
Clara's mother.
Young.
Terrified.
Sitting in the same basement decades earlier.
Clara stared at the screen.
Her mother's voice came through the speakers.
“If Clara ever sees this, it means Richard has returned.”
Clara stopped breathing.
Arthur whispered:
“Eleanor…”
The video continued.
“I need her to know one thing.”
Eleanor looked directly into the camera.
“Arthur did not kill me.”
Clara looked at her father.
He closed his eyes.
Her mother's voice continued.
“The accident was caused by Richard.”
Clara's hand flew to her mouth.
“He tampered with the brakes.”
Arthur's face collapsed.
“But he didn't expect Arthur to survive.”
Clara turned toward her father.
“You knew.”
Arthur shook his head.
“I knew someone had tampered with the car.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because there was no proof.”
The video continued.
“Richard believed I had hidden the final trust documents in the house.”
Eleanor looked frightened.
“He was wrong.”
She paused.
“The documents were never here.”
Clara frowned.
“Then where?”
Eleanor looked down.
“At the place where Clara took her first breath.”
Clara's eyes widened.
“The hospital.”
Arthur nodded slowly.
“The old maternity hospital.”
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel had arrived with another security team.
“It's not the hospital.”
Arthur frowned.
“Then where?”
Daniel looked at Clara.
“Your mother was referring to something else.”
“What?”
Daniel stepped toward the laptop.
“Your birth certificate.”
Clara stared.
“What about it?”
“The original was never filed at the hospital.”
He opened another document.
“It was sealed by a judge.”
“Why?”
“Because the identity of your biological father was legally protected.”
Arthur looked at him.
“Richard.”
Daniel nodded.
“But there's more.”
He opened the document.
The original certificate contained a second name.
Clara stared.
Her mother's name.
Arthur's name.
Then a third line.
Biological Father: Richard Whitlock.
But underneath it was another notation.
Parental Rights: Permanently Terminated.
Clara froze.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel answered:
“Your mother had Richard legally stripped of parental rights before you were born.”
Arthur nodded.
“She knew what he was.”
Clara looked at the screen.
“Then why did he say he gave me life?”
“Because he did.”
Daniel looked at her.
“But he never earned the right to call himself your father.”
Suddenly the laptop screen changed.
A live camera feed appeared.
Clara's bedroom.
Then the nursery.
Then the hallway.
Someone had access to every camera.
Mark.
Or Richard.
The camera moved.
Slowly.
Until it focused on Clara.
A voice came through the speakers.
“You should have listened to your mother.”
Richard.
Arthur stepped forward.
“Come out.”
Richard laughed.
“You still think this is about money.”
Arthur's voice hardened.
“Then tell us what you want.”
“I want what Eleanor stole.”
Clara stared at the screen.
“She didn't steal anything.”
“She stole my daughter.”
“No.”
Clara's voice was stronger now.
“She protected me from you.”
Silence.
Then Richard answered:
“She turned you against me before you were old enough to understand.”
Clara's eyes hardened.
“You abandoned me.”
“I watched you.”
“You stalked me.”
“I protected you.”
“You manipulated Mark.”
Richard laughed.
“Mark manipulated himself.”
Clara suddenly understood.
“Then why did you help him?”
“Because he was useful.”
Arthur looked toward Ethan.
“What about Evelyn?”
Richard's voice became colder.
“She was greedy.”
“And Mark?”
“He was desperate.”
Clara whispered:
“And my baby?”
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“Your baby is the key.”
Arthur's face changed.
“What did you do?”
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, every screen in the house displayed the same message:
12 HOURS.
Then:
BRING ME THE ORIGINAL TRUST.
The screens went black.
Clara looked at Arthur.
“Dad…”
Arthur nodded.
“We find the trust.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“We don't find it.”
May you like
He looked at Clara.
“We make Richard believe we found it.”
