Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE FOOTAGE

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Clara stared at Maria.

Maria stared at the floor.

Arthur held the phone in one hand, the security footage still frozen on the screen.

Mark looked from one woman to the other.

Then he smiled.

It was small.

Almost relieved.

Because for the first time that night, someone else was under suspicion.

“See?” Mark said quietly. “I told you.”

Clara slowly turned toward him.

“You told me what?”

“That Maria has never been loyal to you.”

Maria's head snapped up.

“That is a lie.”

Mark shrugged.

“Is it?”

Arthur stepped between them.

“Everyone stops talking.”

His voice cut through the room.

He looked at Maria.

“You said you called me because you were concerned about Clara.”

“I was.”

“Then explain why you're in this footage.”

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn't helping him.”

Arthur said nothing.

Maria pointed at the screen.

“That footage is from eight months ago.”

Clara's face tightened.

“Eight months?”

Maria nodded.

“Yes.”

Arthur looked at the timestamp.

It was exactly eight months earlier.

Clara remembered that period.

She had been three months pregnant.

Mark had been traveling constantly.

Or at least, that's what he had told her.

Maria swallowed.

“I was meeting that woman because I was trying to find out what she was doing here.”

Mark laughed.

“Convenient.”

Maria turned toward him.

“You knew I was watching you.”

His smile disappeared.

Arthur noticed.

“You knew?”

Mark said nothing.

Maria continued.

“You threatened me.”

Clara stared.

“What did he threaten you with?”

Maria looked at her.

“My son.”

The room went silent.

Maria wiped her cheek.

“My son had a debt from an old business. Mark found out.”

Mark's expression hardened.

“I didn't threaten anyone.”

“You told me if I spoke to Mrs. Clara, you'd make sure my son lost everything.”

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“Is there proof?”

Maria nodded.

“Yes.”

She reached into her apron pocket.

A tiny flash drive appeared between her fingers.

“I kept every message.”

Mark's face changed.

Arthur took it.

“Why didn't you give me this before?”

Maria looked at Clara.

“Because I was afraid.”

Clara whispered:

“You should have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

“The night you asked me why Mark was checking your phone.”

Clara remembered.

Maria had started to say something.

Mark had entered the kitchen.

The conversation had ended.

Clara looked away.

She suddenly remembered dozens of moments she had dismissed.

Maria warning her not to sign something.

Maria asking why Mark had changed the locks on the office.

Maria quietly taking photographs of documents.

At the time, Clara thought she was simply being protective.

Now it all made sense.

Arthur connected the flash drive to the computer.

A folder opened.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Messages.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Audio recordings.

And one video.

Arthur clicked it.

The screen showed Mark sitting across from the same woman from the security footage.

This time, her face was clear.

Clara recognized her instantly.

Her sister-in-law.

Evelyn.

Mark's brother Ethan's wife.

Clara's lips parted.

“No…”

Evelyn had been at every family dinner.

Every holiday.

Every baby shower.

She had held Clara's hands and promised she would always be there.

Now Clara watched her lean across the table toward Mark.

Evelyn's voice came through the speakers.

“You have to get her out before the baby is born.”

Mark answered:

“I know.”

“And the trust?”

“I'll handle it.”

Evelyn leaned back.

“What about Arthur?”

Mark smiled.

“He thinks Clara owns the house.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“And?”

Mark's voice dropped.

“She doesn't.”

Clara's heart stopped.

Arthur paused the video.

“What does he mean?”

Mark didn't answer.

Arthur played it again.

Evelyn asked:

“Are you sure the transfer went through?”

Mark replied:

“The documents are signed.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Then once Clara leaves, everything changes.”

The video ended.

Clara looked at Mark.

“What documents?”

Mark said nothing.

Arthur opened the next file.

There it was.

A property transfer document.

Clara's name appeared on it.

But underneath her signature was another signature.

A forged signature.

Arthur stared at it.

Then looked at Clara.

“You never signed this.”

“No.”

Arthur's expression became terrifyingly calm.

Mark stepped backward.

“Wait.”

Arthur held up the document.

“You forged her signature.”

“I had authorization.”

“You did not.”

“I was her husband.”

“That isn't authorization.”

Mark's voice rose.

“You don't understand the arrangement!”

Arthur slammed the folder shut.

“Then explain it.”

Mark couldn't.

Clara stared at him.

“What did you transfer?”

Mark's silence lasted too long.

Arthur answered for him.

“The house.”

Clara's eyes widened.

“What?”

Mark whispered:

“I was going to sell it.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Clara grabbed the edge of the desk.

“You were going to sell my mother's house?”

Mark looked at her.

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.”

She laughed once.

A broken, disbelieving sound.

“You were going to throw me out of my own house…”

Mark stepped toward her.

“…after selling it behind my back.”

Arthur stepped between them.

Mark stopped.

Then Clara noticed something.

One line on the transfer document.

Purchaser: Blackridge Holdings LLC.

She knew that name.

It had appeared on Mark's financial statements.

The same company that had received millions from the family trust.

Clara looked at Arthur.

“Dad…”

Arthur was already reaching for his phone.

“Call Daniel.”

Then he looked at Mark.

“And call the police.”

Mark's face went completely white.

But before anyone could move—

his phone rang.

The screen displayed one name.

EVELYN.

Arthur looked at him.

“Answer it.”

Mark hesitated.

“Put it on speaker.”

Mark slowly accepted the call.

Evelyn's frightened voice came through.

“Mark?”

Nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Did they find the basement?”

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

Clara's blood ran cold.

“What basement?”

The line went dead.

May you like

Arthur turned toward Mark.

“Now you're going to tell me everything.”
