Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

The arrest warrant changed everything.

The clinic could no longer remain secure.

Uniformed officers surrounded the entrance.

News crews blocked the road.

Julian’s legal team called repeatedly, warning him not to resist.

Elena stood beside the bed, pulling a dark coat over her hospital clothing.

“You are not surrendering,” Julian said.

“If I run, Camila’s story becomes believable.”

“You are thirty-four weeks pregnant.”

“And innocent.”

“Innocence does not protect anyone in my family.”

Elena looked at him.

“That is the first honest thing you have said about them.”

Julian contacted federal investigator Daniel Reeves.

Reeves had spent twenty years prosecuting financial crimes.

He owed Julian a favor after Rossi shipping records helped dismantle a smuggling network.

“I need federal protection for a witness,” Julian said.

“Who?”

“My wife.”

Reeves was silent.

“The woman on the news?”

“The woman being framed on the news.”

“Local prosecutors have a signed complaint and transaction records.”

“Forged.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Give me twelve hours.”

“I cannot stop an arrest without evidence.”

“You can take custody of the financial records she uncovered.”

“That may create jurisdiction.”

“Do it.”

Reeves agreed to send agents.

The local police entered the clinic before they arrived.

A detective approached Elena.

“Elena Rossi, you are under arrest for theft of private financial documents, fraudulent access to corporate systems, and attempted extortion.”

Julian stepped between them.

“She is under medical supervision.”

“We have a physician authorized to examine her.”

“Authorized by whom?”

“The district attorney.”

Elena touched Julian’s arm.

“Let them do this.”

“No.”

“They want you to resist.”

The detective reached for the handcuffs.

Julian caught his wrist.

“You will not place metal restraints on a pregnant woman.”

“Mr. Rossi, step aside.”

Marcus appeared with Clara and the digital drive.

“Federal agents are entering the building,” he announced.

The detective looked toward the corridor.

Daniel Reeves entered with four agents.

He presented an order taking possession of evidence connected to an interstate financial conspiracy.

The local officers argued.

Reeves remained calm.

“For the next twenty-four hours, Mrs. Rossi is a cooperating federal witness.”

The detective lowered the handcuffs.

“This is not over.”

“No,” Elena said.

“It is only beginning.”

They left through the front entrance.

Cameras flashed violently.

Reporters shouted questions.

“Julian, is Elena blackmailing you?”

“Is Camila pregnant with your child?”

“Did your wife steal from the Rossi Group?”

Julian stopped.

His attorneys urged him to continue walking.

He turned toward the cameras.

“Elena Rossi is my lawful wife.”

The crowd grew louder.

“She did not steal from my company.”

“She uncovered theft inside it.”

A reporter called out.

“Are you denying Camila Laurent’s pregnancy?”

“I am denying that I am the father of any child she may be carrying.”

The statement exploded across every live broadcast.

Elena stared at him.

Julian continued.

“Anyone who threatened my wife, interfered with her communications, forged documents, or placed her unborn child at risk will be exposed.”

He looked directly into the nearest camera.

“That includes anyone carrying the Rossi name.”

At Rossi Tower, Sofia watched the statement from Julian’s private office.

Camila stood near the desk.

Matteo sat in a chair with his injured shoulder bandaged.

“You said he would protect the company,” Camila said.

Sofia turned off the television.

“He is protecting what he believes belongs to him.”

“He humiliated me publicly.”

“You announced a pregnancy he knows cannot be his.”

“He was supposed to doubt himself.”

Matteo laughed.

“Julian may be arrogant, but he keeps careful records of where he places his body.”

Camila glared at him.

“You told me Elena would never reappear.”

“I told you she would be controlled.”

“You failed.”

Matteo’s smile vanished.

“Be careful.”

Sofia walked toward the window.

“The trust changes the strategy.”

Camila looked at her.

“You found it?”

“Not yet.”

“Then why are we standing here?”

“Because the key is with Julian.”

Matteo adjusted his sling.

“Let me handle him.”

“You pointed a gun at his wife and returned without the ledger,” Sofia replied.

“Your methods are becoming emotional.”

“He had Marcus.”

Sofia’s face hardened.

“Marcus should have been removed years ago.”

Camila looked between them.

“What happens when Elena’s child is born?”

No one answered.

Camila’s expression changed.

“You cannot touch the baby.”

Matteo smiled coldly.

“Your concern is touching.”

“I agreed to ruin Julian.”

“I did not agree to harm a child.”

Sofia turned toward her.

“You agreed to revenge.”

“Revenge has consequences.”

Camila held Sofia’s gaze.

“My mother died because of your family.”

“And your father has spent twenty-three years preparing you to become useful.”

Camila flinched.

Sofia saw it.

“Do not pretend you entered Julian’s bed for justice.”

“I never entered his bed.”

“No.”

Sofia’s voice became cruel.

“You failed at that too.”

At the federal office, Elena gave Reeves a complete statement.

She described the threats, forged letters, hidden accounts, and attempted abduction.

Julian listened from behind a glass partition.

For the first time, he heard every detail of the night she disappeared.

Sofia had arrived at the mansion after midnight.

She had shown Elena live surveillance of Julian’s car.

Then Gabriel Sloane entered carrying a folder.

Inside were false medical reports declaring Elena mentally unstable.

A prepared confession claimed she had stolen two million euros.

A second document transferred her personal property to the Rossi family.

“They told me to sign,” Elena said.

“What happened when you refused?” Reeves asked.

“Sloane placed a photograph of Julian on the table.”

“What kind of photograph?”

“He was asleep.”

Julian’s breath caught.

“There was a laser sight on his chest.”

Elena continued.

“They said the next photograph would be taken after they pulled the trigger.”

Reeves leaned forward.

“So you signed.”

“Yes.”

“They took my phone.”

“My passport.”

“My wedding ring.”

“Then they drove me to Marseille.”

“How did you escape?”

“The driver stopped at a private airfield.”

“A woman was waiting there.”

“Clara?”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“It was Camila.”

Julian stared through the glass.

Elena looked toward him.

“She gave me cash and told me how to reach the shelter.”

Reeves frowned.

“Camila helped you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She said she did not want me killed.”

“Then why did she participate in framing you?”

Elena’s voice lowered.

“Because she wanted me gone.”

“She simply did not want my death on her conscience.”

After the interview, Julian confronted Clara.

“You knew Camila helped Elena escape.”

“No.”

“Elena never told you?”

“She told me someone intervened.”

“She did not give me a name.”

Julian found Elena standing near the window.

“Why did you protect Camila?”

“I was not protecting her.”

“You omitted her role.”

“She saved my life.”

“She also destroyed it.”

“Yes.”

Elena turned.

“People can do both.”

Julian studied her face.

“You still believe there is something good in her.”

“I believe she is afraid of Matteo.”

Marcus entered carrying a tablet.

“Reeves analyzed the drive.”

“What did he find?”

“The four hundred million dollars was divided into two groups.”

“Bribes and concealment payments.”

“And?”

Marcus displayed a list of medical transfers.

“The second group paid for fertility treatments.”

Julian frowned.

“For whom?”

Marcus enlarged the document.

The patient name was hidden behind a code.

But the clinic identifier was visible.

Elena recognized it.

“That is the clinic where my pregnancy was confirmed.”

Marcus nodded.

“Someone accessed Elena’s prenatal records before she disappeared.”

Julian looked at the payment authorization.

It bore Sofia’s signature.

“They knew about the baby before Elena told anyone.”

“There is more,” Marcus said.

“The records include a scheduled genetic procedure.”

Elena read the page.

Her face drained of color.

“They planned to falsify paternity evidence.”

Julian looked at her.

Marcus scrolled lower.

The intended legal mother was listed as Camila Laurent.

The embryo identification number matched Elena’s unborn child.

They had never intended merely to make Elena disappear.

They intended to take her son.
