Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN JULIAN CALLED MOTHER

Julian reached the neonatal center in eleven minutes.
The bassinet beside Elena’s bed was empty.
One guard lay unconscious in the corridor.
A second had been locked inside a medication room.
The surveillance system showed a nurse leaving with Luca inside a transport incubator.
The nurse’s identification belonged to a woman who had died two years earlier.
Elena stood barefoot near the window.
She wore a hospital robe.
A nurse attempted to make her sit.
Elena refused.
“Where is my son?”
Julian crossed the room.
“I will find him.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
He took her hands.
“It is a promise.”
“I believed your promises before.”
The words were not cruel.
They were terrified.
Julian felt their truth.
Reeves arrived with agents.
Camila described Victor’s plan.
Federal teams searched Laurent properties, airports, private clinics, and coastal roads.
No one found the transport vehicle.
Clara analyzed the route.
The false nurse avoided every public camera.
Only someone with access to old Rossi security plans could have designed the escape.
“Sofia,” Julian said.
“She is in federal custody,” Reeves replied.
“She has contacted attorneys.”
“No visitors.”
“No calls.”
Julian looked at Marcus.
“My mother always prepared alternatives.”
Marcus nodded.
“There may be an extraction protocol from the years your father faced kidnapping threats.”
They searched archived Rossi security documents.
One route led from the neonatal center to an abandoned marina.
A private tunnel connected the marina to a warehouse once owned by Rossi Shipping.
The property had been sold ten years earlier.
The buyer was a Laurent company.
Julian prepared to leave.
Elena blocked the door.
“I am coming.”
“You gave birth three days ago.”
“He is my son.”
“You are barely able to stand.”
“Then help me stand.”
Julian wanted to refuse.
He looked into her eyes and understood that leaving her behind would not protect her.
It would only make her powerless again.
They traveled in an armored federal vehicle.
At the marina, agents found the transport vehicle abandoned near the water.
The incubator was empty.
A white blanket lay inside.
Elena picked it up.
It smelled faintly of Luca’s hospital soap.
A security camera had recorded a speedboat leaving thirty minutes earlier.
Its destination could have been anywhere along the coast.
Camila examined the image.
“That is my father’s boat.”
“Where would he take Luca?” Julian asked.
“There is an island property.”
Victor had inherited it from Isabella.
The property did not appear in corporate records.
Only family members knew it existed.
Reeves prepared helicopters.
A storm moved over the coast.
Flying conditions deteriorated.
Julian refused to wait.
They boarded a federal patrol boat.
Elena remained inside the cabin with a medic.
Camila sat opposite her.
For several minutes, neither woman spoke.
At last, Camila said, “I am sorry.”
Elena looked at her.
“That is a small sentence.”
“I know.”
“You helped them make Julian believe I stole from him.”
“Yes.”
“You helped them take my identity.”
“Yes.”
“You stood beside him while I cleaned hotel rooms.”
Camila’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
“Why should I care that you are sorry?”
“You should not.”
Elena studied her.
Camila continued.
“I thought destroying Julian would repair something inside my father.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
“It only revealed there was nothing inside him that revenge had not already consumed.”
Elena looked at the white blanket in her hands.
“Do you know why I did not tell investigators you helped me escape?”
“Because you are better than I am.”
“No.”
Elena’s voice was quiet.
“Because I knew one day you would have to decide which act defined you.”
Camila looked at her.
“This is that day,” Elena said.
The island appeared through heavy rain.
A stone house stood above the cliffs.
Federal agents approached from the southern shore.
Julian, Marcus, Camila, and Elena entered through an underground boathouse.
They heard Luca crying before they saw anyone.
Elena moved toward the sound.
Julian caught her hand.
“Stay behind me.”
They reached a long drawing room.
Victor stood near the fireplace holding Luca.
Sofia sat in a chair beside him.
She was no longer in federal custody clothing.
A compromised transport officer had helped her escape.
Gabriel Sloane stood near the doors.
His chest was bandaged beneath his shirt.
“You survived,” Julian said.
Sloane smiled.
“I am paid to.”
Elena looked only at Luca.
“Give me my baby.”
Victor held him closer.
“He has the Rossi eyes.”
“He is hungry,” Elena said.
“He needs me.”
Sofia watched her.
“You were always more resilient than I expected.”
“You mistook kindness for weakness.”
“I mistook love for a form of obedience.”
Julian looked at his mother.
“You arranged your own escape.”
“I arranged it years ago.”
“You kidnapped your grandson.”
“I prevented Victor from killing him.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“You said the child was leverage.”
“He is.”
Sofia stood.
“She contacted me from custody,” she explained.
“She told me Victor had purchased the nurse.”
“I offered him the island in exchange for bringing Luca here.”
“You used my son to escape.”
“I saved his life.”
“You always rename your crimes.”
Sofia looked almost wounded.
“I did what was necessary.”
“You murdered Isabella.”
“I removed a threat.”
Camila flinched.
Victor turned toward Sofia.
“You admitted it.”
“I never denied it to you.”
“You told me Augusto ordered the collapse.”
“I told you what allowed you to remain useful.”
Victor’s grip on Luca tightened.
The baby cried louder.
Elena stepped forward.
“Please.”
Victor looked at her.
“You understand loss now.”
“No.”
Elena’s voice remained steady.
“I understand what loss has made you.”
“You believe compassion can shame me?”
“No.”
“I believe your daughter is watching.”
Victor looked toward Camila.
She held the original Monaco file.
“My entire life was built on your lie,” she said.
“Everything I did to Julian.”
“Everything I did to Elena.”
“You taught me it was justice.”
“It was.”
“No.”
Camila began crying.
“It was grief that you refused to survive.”
Victor’s expression twisted.
“You sound like your mother.”
“Good.”
Sloane moved toward Camila.
Marcus raised his weapon.
Agents entered through the lower doors.
The room erupted.
Sloane fired.
Marcus returned fire.
Sofia moved behind a column.
Victor ran toward the terrace with Luca.
Elena screamed.
Julian pursued him into the storm.
The terrace ended near a cliff.
Victor held Luca in one arm and a gun in the other.
“Stop.”
Julian stopped.
Rain struck his face.
“Give him to me.”
“You took Isabella’s child from me.”
“I was fifteen.”
“Your name took him.”
“I did not choose my name.”
“Neither did he.”
Victor looked at Luca.
For one terrible moment, Julian believed he might throw the baby over the railing.
Camila stepped onto the terrace.
“Dad.”
Victor looked at her.
She had not called him that in years.
“Give me the baby,” she said.
“Come home with me.”
“There is no home.”
“There can be.”
“You chose them.”
“I chose not to become you.”
Victor’s face collapsed.
Sloane appeared behind Camila.
His weapon was raised.
Sofia stood several feet away.
“Shoot Julian,” she ordered.
Sloane aimed.
Camila saw him.
She moved between the weapon and Julian.
The shot struck her side.
She fell.
Victor stared at his daughter.
The gun slipped from his hand.
Julian rushed forward and took Luca.
Marcus tackled Sloane near the terrace doors.
Elena reached Julian.
He placed their son against her chest.
Luca continued crying.
Alive.
Safe.
Federal agents arrested Victor.
Sofia did not resist.
As they placed her in restraints, she looked at Julian holding Elena and Luca.
For the first time, her composure disappeared completely.
“You would throw away the Rossi empire for them,” she said.
Julian looked at his mother.
“No.”
“I would throw it away because of what you made it.”
Sofia’s eyes filled with something that might have been grief.
Or rage.
Perhaps she no longer knew the difference.
Agents led her inside.
Camila lay on the terrace while medics worked to stop the bleeding.
She opened her eyes and found Elena beside her.
“Did I choose correctly?” Camila whispered.
Elena took her hand.
May you like
“You finally chose for yourself.”
Then Camila lost consciousness.
