Chapter 6 - THE CAMERA THAT NEVER BLINKED

No one spoke.

Marcus stood near the clinic door, staring at his own reflection on the computer screen.

Julian turned toward him.

“What were you doing there?”

Marcus did not reach for his weapon.

He did not deny the image.

“That room belonged to your father.”

“That does not answer me.”

“I was investigating Sofia.”

“You never told me.”

“I could not.”

“You could not tell me my wife was being targeted?”

“I did not know Elena was the target until later.”

Elena looked at him.

“How much later?”

Marcus’s silence was answer enough.

Julian crossed the room.

“You knew where she was.”

“Not exactly.”

“But you knew she had not abandoned me.”

“I suspected.”

Julian struck him.

Marcus accepted the blow without defending himself.

“You watched me destroy myself,” Julian said.

“I watched you remain alive.”

“What does that mean?”

Marcus wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.

“Your father left instructions.”

“My father is dead.”

“He knew Sofia and Matteo would eventually turn on you.”

“And his solution was to let them take Elena?”

“His solution was to keep you ignorant until I could identify everyone involved.”

Julian stared at him with disbelief.

“You used my wife as bait.”

“No.”

“You used both of us.”

“Yes.”

Elena closed her eyes briefly.

Julian wanted to strike Marcus again.

Clara stepped between them.

“We do not have time for this.”

“He betrayed me.”

“So did almost everyone in this building.”

Clara pointed toward the frozen video.

“Marcus entered that room because I sent him.”

Julian looked at her.

“You were working together?”

“We have been working together for eleven years.”

“Why?”

“Because your father’s death was not natural.”

Julian’s anger paused.

“The autopsy found cardiac failure.”

“The autopsy was altered.”

Clara opened another file from the drive.

It contained medical reports, pharmacy invoices, and photographs.

“Your father was poisoned slowly over six months.”

“By whom?”

“We never proved it.”

“Then why accuse anyone?”

“Because the same medication used to poison him was purchased through one of Matteo’s shell companies.”

Julian looked toward Marcus.

“You knew.”

“I knew there was a possibility.”

“And you stayed silent.”

“If I had accused Matteo without proof, Sofia would have buried the evidence and removed me.”

“Instead, you let me place him inside every division of the company.”

“I remained close enough to monitor him.”

“You did not monitor him very well.”

Marcus absorbed the insult.

“No.”

“I failed.”

Elena looked at the video.

“Why did Sofia want me gone?”

Clara advanced the recording.

After Camila entered, Sofia spoke again.

“Elena has the ledger key.”

Sloane asked how she had obtained it.

Sofia answered.

“Augusto gave it to her before he died.”

Julian stared at the screen.

“My father gave Elena the key?”

Elena shook her head.

“I never met your father.”

Clara looked at the brass key.

“Not directly.”

She asked Elena where she had found it.

“In the lining of my wedding dress.”

Julian frowned.

“The dress belonged to my grandmother.”

“It was restored before our wedding.”

Clara nodded slowly.

“Augusto hid the key inside it years earlier.”

“He expected Julian’s wife to find it?”

“He expected the woman Julian chose to become a target.”

The cruelty of that plan stunned Elena.

“Your father used a future daughter-in-law he had never met.”

“He trusted Julian’s judgment,” Clara replied.

Julian did not find comfort in the explanation.

“He placed Elena in danger from the grave.”

“He believed the key would only matter if the accounts resurfaced.”

“And they did.”

Clara removed the brass key from Julian’s pocket.

“The first compartment contained the ledger.”

“The second lock is inside Rossi Tower.”

“Where?”

“Your father’s private office.”

Julian looked at the photograph delivered to the clinic.

Camila and Sofia were already there.

“What is behind the second lock?”

“The original ownership documents for the Rossi Group.”

Julian stared at her.

“I know who owns the company.”

“No.”

Clara’s voice was quiet.

“You know what the public records say.”

She explained that Augusto Rossi had created a hidden controlling trust before his death.

The trust held veto authority over major mergers, asset transfers, and changes in leadership.

Its beneficiary was not Julian.

It was not Sofia.

It was not Matteo.

“Who is it?” Julian asked.

Clara looked at Elena.

“The first legitimate child born from Julian Rossi’s marriage.”

Elena’s hand moved to her stomach.

Julian stood motionless.

“My son owns controlling authority?”

“Once born and legally acknowledged.”

“Why would my father do that?”

“To prevent Sofia from forcing you into a strategic marriage.”

Julian thought of Camila.

The Laurent merger.

His mother’s relentless encouragement.

“If Elena disappeared and the child remained unknown…”

“Then Sofia could arrange another marriage,” Clara said.

“A child from that union could be presented as the trust beneficiary.”

“Camila’s child,” Elena whispered.

Julian’s face hardened.

“Camila is not pregnant.”

Clara did not answer immediately.

Julian saw the truth before she spoke.

“She claims she is.”

“When?”

“She informed Sofia two weeks ago.”

Julian remembered Camila refusing wine at dinner.

He had assumed she was dieting before a fashion event.

His stomach turned.

“The child cannot be mine.”

“You know that,” Clara replied.

“But public records can be shaped.”

Elena looked at Julian.

“Was there ever a possibility?”

“No.”

His answer came instantly.

“I have never slept with her.”

Elena studied him.

She appeared to believe him.

Marcus moved toward the window.

A vehicle had stopped outside the clinic.

“We have company.”

Julian looked at the security feed.

It was not Sloane.

It was a line of police cars.

Officers exited with a warrant.

A prosecutor stood among them.

Clara read the digital notice that appeared on the clinic’s system.

“Elena is being charged with theft of corporate records.”

Julian laughed without humor.

“They are arresting the victim.”

“There is more,” Clara said.

The warrant named Julian as an accessory.

Marcus checked another feed.

News vans were arriving.

Camila appeared live on every television in the waiting area.

She stood outside Rossi Tower in the same emerald gown.

Her eyes were wet.

Her voice trembled with carefully controlled emotion.

“Julian has been manipulated by a woman who abandoned him after stealing millions from his family.”

A reporter asked whether Camila feared for Julian’s safety.

Camila placed one hand over her abdomen.

“I fear for all of us.”

The camera moved closer.

Camila looked directly into it.

“Especially for Julian’s unborn child.”

Julian stared at the screen.

Elena turned pale.

Within seconds, the world believed Camila Laurent was carrying Julian Rossi’s baby.

And Elena had become the dangerous woman trying to destroy them.
