Chapter 11 - THE LEDGER BENEATH THE CHAPEL

Sofia ended the call before Julian could trace it.

He called again.

The number no longer existed.

Marcus contacted the command location.

The agents guarding Elena had been found unconscious.

One security camera showed a medical vehicle entering through a restricted lane.

The driver wore a federal jacket.

The identification was false.

Sofia had taken Elena less than fifteen minutes earlier.

Julian turned toward Victor.

“Where would she go?”

Victor smiled.

“You believe we shared every secret?”

Julian grabbed him by the collar.

“You worked with her.”

“I worked with Matteo.”

“Where is my mother?”

“I do not know.”

Camila stood beside the piano, pale but composed.

“I may.”

Julian released Victor.

Camila opened the folder again.

A handwritten notation appeared beside an old property number.

“It belongs to Saint Aurelia Chapel.”

Clara had mentioned the chapel at the Rossi family estate.

Sofia had told Julian to meet her there at midnight.

The property had been abandoned after Augusto’s death.

Julian contacted Reeves.

Federal vehicles left the hotel within minutes.

Camila insisted on going.

“You are a witness,” Reeves said.

“So is Elena.”

“You may be a suspect.”

“Then arrest me after we find her.”

Julian looked at Camila.

“Why should I trust you?”

“You should not.”

“Then give me one reason to let you come.”

Camila held up the original maintenance file.

“Because Sofia will talk if she sees this.”

The Rossi estate stood on a cliff above the sea.

Julian had grown up there.

He knew every hallway.

Every hidden stairwell.

Every place Matteo had broken a window and blamed someone else.

The chapel lay beyond the western gardens.

Its bell tower had not rung in eleven years.

When Julian entered, candles burned along the stone walls.

Sofia stood near the altar.

Elena lay on a narrow bench.

Her wrists were not tied, but Sloane stood beside her.

A doctor prepared medical equipment.

Matteo waited in the shadows with a gun.

His injured arm remained in a sling.

“You came quickly,” Sofia said.

Julian looked at Elena.

Her face was damp with pain.

“How far apart are the contractions?” he asked.

“Four minutes,” the doctor replied.

“Then move away from her.”

“I am here to keep her alive.”

Sofia held out one hand.

“The key.”

Julian carried the real brass key now.

He had taken it from Elena’s hidden bag before leaving the command location.

“What does it open?” Julian asked.

“You already know.”

“The trust documents.”

“And the revocation instrument.”

Clara had not mentioned that.

Sofia saw Julian’s surprise.

“Your father created a way to dissolve the trust.”

“Why?”

“Because Augusto never trusted his own decisions for long.”

“You want to erase my son’s inheritance.”

“I want to prevent a newborn from controlling an empire.”

“You want to control it yourself.”

“I have controlled it for thirty years.”

Matteo’s expression tightened.

Sofia noticed.

For the first time, Julian understood the final shape of her plan.

She had used Matteo against him.

She had used Camila against Elena.

She had used Victor’s grief.

In the end, Sofia intended to discard all of them.

Julian looked toward his brother.

“She will remove you next.”

Matteo raised the gun.

“Do not try.”

“She allowed you to be arrested at the tower.”

“She knew I would escape.”

“She taught you how to trigger the Monaco collapse.”

Matteo’s face changed.

“You were a child,” Julian continued.

“She showed you the mechanism.”

“She told you it controlled the lights.”

Matteo looked at Sofia.

His voice became uncertain.

“You said it was the lights.”

Sofia remained calm.

“You released the lock.”

“You told me to.”

“You were always eager to impress.”

Matteo stared at her.

“Did you know Isabella was on that balcony?”

Sofia did not answer.

Camila stepped forward.

“She was pregnant with Augusto’s child.”

Matteo’s weapon shifted toward her.

Sloane looked between them.

The structure of loyalty inside the chapel began to fracture.

Elena cried out again.

Julian moved toward her.

Sloane raised his weapon.

“Stop.”

Julian stopped.

Elena looked at him.

“The baby is coming.”

The doctor confirmed her labor was advancing too quickly to move safely.

Julian looked at Sofia.

“Whatever you want, do it now.”

“The key.”

He held it out.

“Release Elena first.”

“No.”

“Then you do not receive it.”

Sofia smiled.

“You will give it to me before your son takes his first breath.”

“Why?”

“Because the revocation document can only be activated before the beneficiary is born.”

Julian understood.

Once Luca was born, Sofia could not dissolve the trust.

Time was running out for her.

The chapel bell suddenly rang.

Everyone looked upward.

Marcus entered through the side door.

Federal agents appeared behind him.

Sloane grabbed Elena and pressed his weapon near her shoulder.

The doctor backed away.

Sofia remained calm.

“You brought authorities onto Rossi property.”

Julian looked at his mother.

“You lost the right to call it ours.”

Matteo aimed at Marcus.

Camila raised the Monaco file.

“If you shoot anyone, this goes to every news outlet in Europe.”

Sofia laughed softly.

“You still believe paper can frighten me?”

“No,” Camila replied.

“But this might.”

She produced a small recording device.

Sofia’s statements inside the chapel had been transmitted live to Reeves.

For the first time, Sofia’s composure cracked.

She turned toward Sloane.

“End it.”

Sloane moved his weapon toward Elena.

Matteo fired first.

The bullet struck Sloane in the chest.

He fell beside the bench.

Federal agents rushed forward.

Marcus tackled Matteo.

The doctor returned to Elena.

Julian dropped beside her and took her hand.

“I am here.”

“You are late,” she gasped.

“I know.”

“You are always late.”

“I know.”

Despite the pain, Elena almost laughed.

Then her expression changed.

The doctor looked at the monitor.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The baby’s heart rate is falling.”

They could not reach a hospital in time.

The doctor prepared for an emergency delivery inside the chapel.

Julian remained beside Elena.

Sofia stood under guard near the altar.

She watched without visible emotion.

The labor lasted thirty-seven minutes.

For Julian, time ceased to exist.

Elena screamed once.

Then the chapel became silent.

The doctor lifted a tiny, motionless child.

Julian stopped breathing.

Elena searched the doctor’s face.

“Why isn’t he crying?”

The doctor began resuscitation.

Seconds passed.

Then more.

Julian held Elena’s hand as she whispered Luca’s name.

At last, a small cry filled the chapel.

Elena broke into tears.

Julian lowered his forehead to her hand.

The doctor wrapped Luca in a white cloth.

“He is breathing.”

Julian looked at his son for the first time.

Luca was impossibly small.

His eyes remained closed.

His hand opened weakly.

Sofia stared at the child.

Something unreadable moved across her face.

The trust had become permanent.

She had lost.

Federal agents escorted her toward the chapel doors.

Before leaving, Sofia looked at Julian.

“You believe this is over.”

Julian held his son against his chest.

“It is over for you.”

“No.”

Sofia’s gaze shifted toward Marcus.

“It begins when you discover which man poisoned your father.”

Marcus went still.

Sofia smiled.

Then she revealed the final secret.

May you like

“It was not Matteo.”

“It was the man standing beside you.”
