Chapter 12 - BLOOD AT THE BOARDROOM TABLE

Marcus did not react.

That frightened Julian more than denial would have.

Federal agents escorted Sofia away.

Matteo was taken separately.

Sloane survived the gunshot and was transported under guard.

Elena and Luca were flown by medical helicopter to a private neonatal center.

Julian went with them.

For the next forty-eight hours, nothing mattered except Elena’s recovery and Luca’s breathing.

The baby needed oxygen support.

Doctors said his lungs were underdeveloped but strong.

Elena slept for only short periods.

Each time she woke, she checked the bassinet beside her bed.

Julian remained in the room unless doctors forced him out.

He did not discuss Marcus.

He did not discuss the company.

He did not answer the hundreds of messages from directors and attorneys.

On the third morning, Elena watched him holding Luca.

“You should support his head more carefully,” she said.

Julian adjusted his arm instantly.

“Like this?”

“A little higher.”

He followed her instruction.

Luca opened one eye briefly.

Julian smiled.

Elena watched him.

“You look different.”

“I have not slept.”

“That is not what I meant.”

Julian looked at his son.

“I spent years acquiring buildings because I believed ownership made things permanent.”

“It does not.”

“No.”

He touched Luca’s tiny hand.

“This is the first thing I have ever been terrified to hold because I know I cannot control whether I lose it.”

Elena’s expression softened.

“You cannot live by expecting loss.”

“I learned that from you.”

“No.”

“You learned how to expect betrayal.”

Julian accepted the distinction.

Marcus waited outside the hospital under federal supervision.

He had not been arrested.

Sofia’s accusation had no supporting evidence yet.

Clara demanded Julian hear Marcus’s explanation.

Elena agreed.

“Secrets created this,” she said.

“We cannot choose silence now because the truth may hurt.”

Marcus entered without a weapon.

He stood near the door.

“Did you poison my father?” Julian asked.

“No.”

“Did you provide the medication?”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at him sharply.

Marcus explained that Augusto had been diagnosed with an aggressive neurological illness.

The condition would eventually destroy his memory, speech, and physical control.

Augusto refused to let Sofia use his illness to seize the company.

He asked Marcus to obtain medication that would shorten his life when the symptoms became severe.

“You helped him die,” Julian said.

“I gave him the medication.”

“Did he take it voluntarily?”

“Yes.”

“Can you prove that?”

Marcus handed him a sealed letter.

Augusto’s handwriting covered the pages.

Julian read silently.

His father described the diagnosis.

He explained the hidden trust.

He admitted his guilt in concealing the Monaco deaths.

He wrote that he lacked the courage to face public ruin but hoped Julian would one day correct his failures.

At the end, Augusto asked Marcus to remain beside Julian.

Not as an employee.

As a shield.

Julian lowered the letter.

“You should have told me.”

“Your father ordered me not to reveal it unless Sofia used his death against me.”

“She just did.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you allow me to believe his heart failed naturally?”

“Because that was his wish.”

Julian looked at Elena.

She had suffered because too many people decided what truths others could handle.

“I will not defend what I did,” Marcus said.

“I believed loyalty meant obeying your father.”

“I was wrong.”

Julian folded the letter.

“Reeves will receive a copy.”

Marcus nodded.

“If he decides you committed a crime, I will not protect you.”

“I understand.”

“And you will never conceal another threat from me.”

“No.”

“Not even to protect me.”

“No.”

Julian looked toward Luca.

“Especially not to protect me.”

Marcus left.

That afternoon, the Rossi board demanded an emergency meeting.

Sofia and Matteo had been arrested, but their shares still existed.

The Laurent merger had collapsed.

Banks froze several Rossi accounts.

Employees feared thousands of layoffs.

Julian could not ignore the company forever.

Elena encouraged him to attend.

“Your employees did not create your family’s crimes.”

“No.”

“They should not lose their livelihoods because you are afraid to leave this room.”

Julian looked at her.

“I am afraid something will happen while I am gone.”

“Something may happen while you are here.”

“That is not comforting.”

“It is reality.”

He arranged six guards, federal monitoring, and a private medical team.

Elena shook her head.

“You are turning the neonatal floor into a military compound.”

“Yes.”

“You are impossible.”

“So I have been told.”

At Rossi Tower, the boardroom table had been repaired after Matteo’s removal.

Julian stood before the directors.

He did not attempt to preserve the family’s image.

He disclosed the hidden accounts.

The bribery.

The falsified inspections.

The illegal medical plan involving Elena’s child.

He announced independent audits of every Rossi property built during Sofia’s leadership.

The financial cost would be enormous.

One director accused him of destroying shareholder value.

Julian replied calmly.

“Then we will learn what value remains after the lies are removed.”

Elias Ward supported him.

Two other directors followed.

The board voted to retain Julian temporarily.

Then Clara entered carrying the trust document recovered from the second compartment beneath the chapel altar.

The trust granted controlling voting authority to Luca Rossi.

Until Luca reached adulthood, his legal guardians would exercise that authority jointly.

Julian and Elena.

The boardroom fell silent.

A family empire had placed power into the hands of the woman it tried to erase.

Julian looked at Elena’s empty chair.

He had asked that it remain at the table.

Elias smiled faintly.

“It appears Mrs. Rossi now controls the deciding vote.”

“Not Mrs. Rossi alone,” Julian replied.

“Our son.”

After the meeting, Camila waited in Julian’s office.

Federal agents remained outside.

“You should not be here,” Julian said.

“I came to surrender.”

“You already spoke to Reeves.”

“I did not tell him everything.”

Julian closed the door.

Camila placed a small drive on the desk.

“This contains my father’s communications with Matteo.”

“Why keep it?”

“I planned to use it after Rossi Group collapsed.”

“To destroy them both?”

“To inherit what remained.”

Julian studied her.

“At least you are honest now.”

“I am tired.”

“Of lying?”

“Of becoming my father.”

She looked toward the photograph from Julian and Elena’s wedding still standing on the shelf.

“I hated Elena before I met her.”

“Why?”

“Because she had the life my father said should have belonged to my mother.”

“Augusto never intended to leave Sofia.”

“My father said he did.”

“Your father used you.”

“Yes.”

Camila’s eyes filled with tears.

“But I allowed him to.”

She told Julian that Victor planned one final attack.

He had money hidden outside the frozen accounts.

He had purchased cooperation from someone inside the neonatal center.

Julian’s blood turned cold.

“Who?”

“I do not know.”

“Then why warn me now?”

“Because Victor does not need the trust anymore.”

“What does he want?”

Camila looked at the photograph.

“He wants you to experience the same thing he did.”

Julian understood.

“He is going to kill Elena.”

“No.”

Camila’s face became pale.

“He believes killing her would end your pain.”

“He wants something worse.”

At that moment, every light in Julian’s office went dark.

His secure phone rang.

It was the neonatal center.

Julian answered.

No one spoke.

He heard only the continuous sound of a flat alarm.

Then a nurse screamed.

“Luca is gone.”
