Chapter 14 - THE FALL OF THE GRAND ALCAZAR

Camila survived emergency surgery.

The bullet had missed her heart by less than an inch.

Victor Laurent was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, attempted murder, financial fraud, and obstruction.

Sofia faced similar charges in three countries.

Gabriel Sloane began negotiating with prosecutors within forty-eight hours.

Matteo refused to cooperate.

He insisted the Rossi family would regain control of the investigation.

He did not understand that the name protecting him had already begun collapsing.

The story dominated international news.

The Grand Alcazar Hotel became the symbol of the scandal.

Reporters gathered in the same lobby where Julian had discovered Elena.

Former employees came forward.

Housekeepers described wages withheld through false debts.

Immigrant workers described passports taken by hotel managers.

Security staff admitted Sloane ordered them to monitor Elena.

The concierge who had lied to Julian provided surveillance records hidden outside the official system.

They showed Sloane following Elena for months.

They also showed Camila visiting the hotel twice before Julian’s arrival.

On the second visit, Camila deliberately changed Elena’s work schedule.

She placed her in the lobby during Julian’s check-in.

The reunion had been Camila’s first act of rebellion.

Elena watched the footage from the hospital.

“She wanted you to find me.”

Julian sat beside Luca’s bassinet.

“Yes.”

“But she did not warn me.”

“She may not have known how.”

“That does not excuse her.”

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“You have stopped trying to make every person entirely innocent or entirely guilty.”

“I have met too many people who are both.”

Luca had improved enough to leave intensive care.

For the first time, Elena held him without medical wires restricting movement.

Julian watched from the chair.

“You may hold him,” she said.

He stood carefully.

Elena placed Luca in his arms.

The baby made a small sound and settled against Julian’s chest.

Julian’s eyes filled.

He did not hide it.

Elena touched Luca’s dark hair.

“He knows your voice.”

“I spoke to him while you slept.”

“What did you say?”

“Business forecasts.”

Elena stared at him.

Julian almost smiled.

“I told him about the lake house.”

“What lake house?”

“The one you asked me to buy five years ago.”

“I stopped asking.”

“I bought it yesterday.”

Her expression changed.

“You cannot buy your way back into my life.”

“It is not for you.”

“Then who?”

“For Luca.”

Julian looked down at their son.

“You may decide whether I am ever invited.”

Elena understood what he was attempting.

Not a grand gesture demanding forgiveness.

A place offered without conditions.

“That was almost humble,” she said.

“I found it unpleasant.”

She laughed softly.

It was the first genuine laugh Julian had heard from her since finding her.

The sound gave him more hope than he deserved.

Rossi Group’s independent investigation uncovered structural fraud across twelve properties.

Three hotels were evacuated.

Two apartment towers required major repairs.

The financial damage threatened bankruptcy.

Board members urged Julian to hide preliminary findings until assets could be protected.

He refused.

At a global press conference, Julian announced every dangerous building.

Rossi Group would pay for temporary housing, medical examinations, and repairs.

The company would sell luxury assets to cover the cost.

The first property listed for sale was the Grand Alcazar.

A reporter asked whether Julian regretted exposing his family.

“I regret that exposure was necessary,” he answered.

“I regret that people were placed in danger while my family protected its name.”

“But I do not regret telling the truth.”

Another reporter asked about Elena.

“Is your marriage continuing?”

Julian paused.

“That decision belongs to my wife as much as it belongs to me.”

“Are you living together?”

“No.”

“Do you hope to reconcile?”

“Yes.”

“Does she?”

Julian looked directly at the camera.

“That is not my truth to announce.”

Elena watched from the hospital.

His answer surprised her.

The old Julian would have controlled the narrative.

He would have provided the statement that protected his image.

This Julian protected her right to remain uncertain.

After the press conference, Julian visited Camila.

She remained under guard in a private hospital room.

Her father had asked to see her.

She refused.

“You sold the Alcazar,” she said.

“I am selling it.”

“My father will lose his investment.”

“That is not why.”

“I know.”

Camila looked at the window.

“What will happen to the employees?”

“Elena proposed converting part of the sale into a worker compensation fund.”

Camila smiled faintly.

“Of course she did.”

Julian sat near the bed.

“Why did you arrange for me to see her?”

Camila took a long breath.

“Adrian told me Matteo planned to move her before the merger dinner.”

“Move her where?”

“To the Swiss clinic.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“I knew it was my last chance.”

“You could have told me directly.”

“My father monitored me.”

“You could have warned Elena.”

“Sloane monitored her.”

“So you put us in the same lobby.”

“Yes.”

“And stood beside me pretending surprise.”

“I was terrified.”

Julian looked at her.

Camila did not ask for forgiveness.

She did not explain further.

That honesty mattered.

“I loved the idea of you,” she said.

“The powerful man my father hated.”

“The husband Elena had.”

“The heir to the family that destroyed mine.”

“I wanted to become important enough that no one could use me again.”

“But they were using me the entire time.”

Julian stood.

“What will you do now?”

“Testify.”

“Against your father?”

“And Sofia.”

“And Matteo.”

“Then?”

“I do not know.”

“For the first time,” Julian said, “that answer belongs to you.”

Outside the hospital, Marcus waited with new evidence.

Sloane had provided access codes for Matteo’s private archive.

Inside were recordings of conversations with Sofia.

One recording revealed that Matteo had planned a final escape.

He had bribed a guard at the detention center.

The escape was scheduled for that evening.

Federal officers rushed to secure him.

They were too late.

Matteo’s cell was empty.

A guard had been found injured in a service tunnel.

On the wall, Matteo had left a message for Julian.

The words were written beneath a crude drawing of the Rossi family crest.
