Chapter 9: The House That Belonged to Sophie

Victor arrived at Rosemere with attorneys, private guards, and a court order.

The document granted him temporary authority over the mansion as acting chairman of Vale Group.

Adrian met him at the entrance.

“This house is not a corporate asset.”

“It is listed under the foundation.”

“The foundation belongs to Eleanor’s heir.”

“According to an unauthenticated document found in a burned chapel.”

Federal investigators had taken the original trust for analysis.

Until the court certified it, Victor controlled the foundation.

Behind Adrian, Sophie stood beside June and Keane.

Victor’s gaze settled on her pearl.

“Still wearing it?”

Sophie held the repaired chain.

“Yes.”

Celeste stood behind her father.

She had not spoken publicly since the gala.

Her face carried exhaustion rather than arrogance.

When she looked at Sophie, shame flickered across her expression.

Victor entered the mansion.

“Everyone employed by Adrian is dismissed.”

Keane did not move.

“I work for Rosemere.”

“You work for whoever pays you.”

Sophie spoke.

“My grandmother’s trust pays for the house.”

Victor looked down at her.

“You have been listening to too many adult conversations.”

“You killed my mother.”

The hallway became silent.

Victor smiled.

“That is a serious accusation.”

“Gideon told us.”

“Gideon was poisoned and confused.”

“You poisoned him too.”

Celeste looked at her father.

“What is she talking about?”

Victor ignored her.

Adrian stepped between him and Sophie.

“Touch anyone in this house and I will have you arrested.”

“On what authority?”

“On the authority of the recording currently being reviewed by federal prosecutors.”

For the first time, Victor hesitated.

Adrian had no recording of Gideon’s confession.

The prosecutor had forbidden cameras.

Victor did not know that.

Adrian continued.

“Leave Rosemere.”

Victor looked toward the ballroom.

He needed access to the vault.

That was why he had taken the company.

Not merely for money.

The records beneath Rosemere could expose Nora’s murder, Charles’s crimes, and Victor’s entire financial network.

“I will return with federal marshals,” Victor said.

“Bring them.”

Victor turned to Celeste.

She remained still.

“Come.”

Celeste looked at Sophie’s necklace.

“I broke it.”

Victor’s expression sharpened.

“This is not the time.”

“It was the reason everyone noticed her.”

“Yes.”

“You told me she was a fraud.”

“She is.”

“The DNA says she’s family.”

Victor grabbed his daughter’s arm.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Release her.”

Victor let go.

Celeste looked between them.

She followed her father, but something in her face had changed.

That evening, Adrian moved Sophie and June to an old guest cottage hidden within Rosemere’s grounds.

Federal agents watched the main house.

Adrian began examining Malcolm’s architectural plans.

A second entrance to the vault had to exist.

The pearl mechanism was ceremonial, designed to recognize the heir.

But Malcolm would not have built a vault without emergency access.

Sophie studied the plans beside him.

“What does this line mean?”

She pointed toward a narrow passage running from Room Seventeen beneath the ballroom.

Adrian compared older drawings.

The passage had been removed from modern plans.

They returned to Room Seventeen.

Behind the child’s wooden horse, they found a floor hatch.

Stone steps descended beneath Rosemere.

The passage ended at the back of the vault.

A steel door required a numeric code.

Twenty-four numbers had been carved around the frame.

Sophie touched her pearl.

“The marks are numbers.”

Each crescent symbol contained one, two, or three tiny lines.

The pearl represented a sequence position.

But without the other twenty-three, the code remained incomplete.

Adrian examined Eleanor’s journal again.

She described the necklace as “Father’s calendar of promises.”

Twenty-four pearls for twenty-four years.

The code might correspond to Eleanor’s birthdays.

Sophie noticed that some journal entries began with moon phases.

Full moon.

Half-moon.

New moon.

Her grandmother had been recording the pearl sequence indirectly.

They spent hours matching the entries.

At midnight, Sophie entered the final numbers.

The steel door opened.

The vault was smaller than expected.

Shelves contained ledgers, photographs, contracts, and original legal documents.

Victor had not reached it.

He possessed the pearls but not the passage code.

At the center stood a sealed glass case.

Inside was Malcolm’s final confession.

Adrian began reading.

Malcolm admitted imprisoning Eleanor.

He admitted covering Nora’s birth.

He admitted arranging Charles Vale’s death.

He also named Gideon as the architect of the trust theft.

The final paragraph concerned Adrian.

My son must never inherit my silence. If he protects the name above the truth, he will become me.

Adrian lowered the letter.

Sophie watched him.

“Was your father bad?”

Adrian considered the question.

“He did terrible things.”

“Did he love you?”

“Yes.”

“Can someone love you and still hurt people?”

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t make the hurting okay.”

“No.”

Sophie nodded as though completing a difficult lesson.

A noise came from the passage.

Keane’s voice sounded through Adrian’s radio.

“Someone breached the western wing.”

The vault lights went out.

Celeste appeared in the doorway holding a gun.

Adrian moved in front of Sophie.

Celeste raised the weapon.

Then she turned and fired into the darkness behind her.

A man collapsed.

Celeste ran inside and sealed the door.

“My father knows about the passage.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Why are you helping us?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I heard him admit he killed Nora.”

May you like

She held out a phone containing the recording.

“And because he just ordered someone to kill Sophie before the court can recognize her.”
