Chapter 10: Celeste’s Choice
Celeste had followed Victor after leaving Rosemere.
At his city apartment, she overheard him speaking with Ethan Cross.
Victor promised Ethan ten million dollars if he secured custody.
After the court recognized Sophie as Eleanor’s heir, Ethan would sign control of the trust to Victor.
Then Sophie would suffer an “accident.”
Ethan objected.
Not because he loved Sophie.
Because he wanted more money.
Victor replied that Nora had made the same mistake by negotiating.
Celeste recorded the conversation from the hallway.
“My father killed her,” she whispered inside the vault. “He said Nora’s brakes failed exactly the way he intended.”
Sophie stood very still.
Adrian expected tears.
Instead, she asked, “Did my mom know him?”
Celeste shook her head.
“She knew he was dangerous.”
Sophie looked away.
Adrian took the phone.
“This can put Victor in prison.”
“If he doesn’t find us first.”
The man Celeste shot had been one of Victor’s private guards.
He remained alive but unconscious in the passage.
Keane secured him.
Federal agents arrived, but Victor had already escaped Rosemere.
The recording was sent to prosecutors.
A warrant was issued for Victor’s arrest.
Vale Group’s board reversed Adrian’s suspension.
Adrian refused to return as chief executive until the company submitted to an independent investigation.
Reporters surrounded Rosemere’s gates.
The story of the forgotten Vale heir spread across the country.
Photographs of Sophie at the gala appeared online.
Some people called her the Pearl Heiress.
Others accused Adrian of exploiting a child to win a family war.
Sophie hated both descriptions.
“I’m just Sophie.”
Adrian agreed.
The court scheduled an emergency inheritance hearing.
Ethan remained Sophie’s legal father unless his rights were terminated.
Although police detained him after Blackwater, Victor’s lawyers filed motions using documents Ethan had signed earlier.
The case became a battle between blood and conduct.
Ethan claimed Nora prevented him from forming a relationship with Sophie.
June testified that Nora feared him.
Nora’s video supported her.
Then Ethan asked to speak with Sophie privately.
Adrian opposed it.
The judge permitted a supervised conversation.
Ethan sat across from Sophie in a small courthouse room.
A child advocate remained in the corner.
Adrian watched through one-way glass.
Ethan’s shoulder was still bandaged.
“You look like your mother,” he said.
Sophie did not respond.
“I didn’t know about you until recently.”
“That’s not what Mom’s video said.”
Ethan looked down.
“I learned before you were born.”
“Why didn’t you come?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of Grandma?”
“Of the Vale family.”
“You took their money.”
He flinched.
“I made mistakes.”
“You tried to take me from June.”
“I am your father.”
“You’re a stranger.”
“I could become more.”
Sophie studied him.
“Would you still want me if I didn’t have money?”
Ethan’s answer came too slowly.
Sophie stood.
“I’m done.”
The judge later terminated Ethan’s temporary custody claim, citing abandonment, coercion, and financial motive.
Permanent termination would require a full trial.
Sophie remained under June’s guardianship.
The inheritance hearing began the following day.
Experts authenticated the trust, Eleanor’s journal, Nora’s video, and the DNA results.
Gideon testified remotely from the hospital.
He admitted blackmailing Eleanor.
He admitted falsifying death records.
He admitted helping Charles Vale attempt to destroy the Blackwater cottage.
When asked whether Sophie was Eleanor’s lawful descendant, Gideon said yes.
The judge recognized Sophie as the beneficiary of Eleanor’s trust.
Rosemere Mansion legally became hers.
The Vale Foundation transferred to an independent board operating for her benefit.
The company shares entered protected management.
Sophie did not understand the numbers.
She understood only that strangers were calling her wealthy.
After the hearing, she returned to Rosemere.
Staff members stood in the entrance hall.
Some bowed their heads.
Sophie looked uncomfortable.
“Please don’t do that.”
Martin Ellis, the elderly butler, stepped forward.
“How would you like us to address you?”
“Sophie.”
“Miss Sophie?”
“Just Sophie.”
He smiled.
“As you wish.”
Adrian watched her walk across the marble floor where she had been humiliated.
Celeste stood near the staircase.
She had not been charged because prosecutors accepted that she had acted to protect Sophie and preserve evidence.
But the public had not forgotten the gala.
Sophie approached her.
Celeste looked at the repaired necklace.
“I am sorry.”
Sophie said nothing.
“I broke it because I thought hurting you would make me look important.”
“It made you look mean.”
“Yes.”
“My grandmother said apologies don’t repair things unless people change.”
Celeste lowered her eyes.
“What would change look like?”
Sophie considered it.
“Stop acting like poor people are invisible.”
Celeste nodded.
“I can do that.”
“You have to do it when no one is watching.”
Celeste looked at her.
The child she had mocked now possessed more moral authority than everyone who had laughed.
That night, Adrian opened Malcolm’s vault with federal investigators.
One shelf was empty.
A label remained.

Then June received a call from an unknown number.
Victor’s voice came through.
“I have the remaining pearls and the final film.”
“What do you want?”
“Sophie.”
June hung up.
Seconds later, alarms sounded across Rosemere.
Smoke rose from the guest cottage.
Victor had not called to negotiate.
He had called to distract them.
