Chapter 8: The Original Will

The trust amendment changed everything.
It confirmed that Eleanor’s descendants were entitled to Rosemere Mansion, control of the Vale Foundation, and forty-eight percent of Vale Group’s voting shares.
Until the descendant reached twenty-five, the shares were to be managed by an independent guardian chosen by Eleanor.
A handwritten line appeared at the bottom.
Under no circumstances shall Gideon Shaw, Victor Vale, or their descendants exercise authority over this trust.
The signature belonged to Malcolm Vale.
Adrian read it three times.
His father had changed his mind.
“He knew Gideon and Victor were dangerous,” June said.
“Victor was only fourteen when this was signed.”
“Then Malcolm feared what Victor’s father represented.”
Victor’s father, Charles Vale, had died in a boating accident when Victor was seventeen.
Charles had served as Malcolm’s business partner and Gideon’s closest friend.
Adrian began to suspect the conspiracy reached another generation back.
The film reel found beneath the trust document was taken to a secure archival laboratory.
It contained footage recorded inside Rosemere in 1994.
Eleanor sat in Room Seventeen holding Nora.
Malcolm stood near the door.
His voice was audible.
“I was wrong.”
Eleanor stared at him.
“You locked me in this room.”
“I believed I was protecting the family.”
“You were protecting your pride.”
Malcolm placed papers on the bed.
“I restored Nora’s name to the trust.”
“Gideon will never allow it.”
“He works for me.”
“No. You depend on him. That is different.”
The footage shifted.
Malcolm promised to help Eleanor and Nora leave Rhode Island safely.
He planned to expose Gideon’s theft after moving them.
Then Charles Vale entered the room.
Victor’s father.
The recording ended.
Adrian froze the final frame.
Charles carried a red folder.
The same folder described in Eleanor’s journal on the night before the fire.
Gideon regained consciousness under federal guard.
Prosecutor Evelyn Hart questioned him with Adrian present.
The attorney looked twenty years older than he had at Rosemere.
“Victor poisoned you,” Adrian said.
Gideon stared at the ceiling.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He believed I planned to make a deal.”
“Were you?”
“I am making one now.”
Gideon requested immunity from murder charges.
The prosecutor refused.
He laughed.
“Then you will learn nothing.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“You’re eighty years old. Victor tried to kill you. Ethan kidnapped you. Your name will be remembered as the man who imprisoned a young mother and erased a child.”
Gideon’s eyes moved toward him.
“What alternative do you offer?”
“The truth.”
“Truth is not an alternative to prison.”
“It is an alternative to dying as Victor’s scapegoat.”
Gideon closed his eyes.
He began speaking.
Charles Vale discovered Malcolm intended to remove him from the company.
Charles and Gideon had diverted millions from the Vale Foundation.
Eleanor found the evidence.
Malcolm planned to report both men.
Charles ordered the Blackwater cottage burned.
The hired man warned Eleanor and helped her escape.
But Charles believed she died.
“What happened to Charles?” Adrian asked.
“Malcolm discovered his involvement.”
“The boating accident.”
Gideon nodded.
“Your father arranged it.”
Adrian sat back.
Malcolm had not been innocent.
He avenged Eleanor by murdering his own brother.
Then he covered every crime to protect the Vale name.
“Why did you conceal Eleanor’s survival after you found her?”
“Because the trust gave her bloodline control. I used the threat of exposure to make her sign financial approvals.”
“You blackmailed her.”
“For twenty-two years.”
Sophie’s grandmother had lived under constant threat.
“Did you kill Nora?” Adrian asked.
Gideon opened his eyes.
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Victor.”
June covered her mouth.
Gideon explained that Nora contacted him after discovering the original records.
She demanded that he confess.
Gideon planned to meet her.
Victor intercepted the message.
He sabotaged Nora’s car and staged the crash.
“Why leave Sophie alive?”
“He did not know where Eleanor had hidden her.”
“Until the gala,” Adrian said.
“Yes.”
The pearl exposed Sophie before Victor’s men were ready.
Celeste’s public humiliation turned a quiet inheritance operation into a scandal.
Adrian almost saw the irony.
Victor’s daughter had destroyed Victor’s plan by drawing attention to the one child he needed to control secretly.
“Where are the stolen pearls?” Adrian asked.
“Victor has them.”
“Why?”
“Together, the pearls form a code.”
Adrian frowned.
Gideon continued.
“The carved marks are not identical. Malcolm used their positions to create a sequence.”
“A sequence to what?”
“A private vault.”
“What is inside?”
“Evidence of every hidden transaction the Vale family made for fifty years.”
The vault could destroy the company.
It could also prove Eleanor’s rights beyond dispute.
Gideon whispered the location.
“Beneath Rosemere’s ballroom.”
Adrian remembered the pearl rolling across the marble.
The truth had stopped at his feet directly above the vault.
He returned to Rosemere with federal investigators.
The ballroom floor contained a circular pattern matching the necklace.
Twenty-four small stone recesses surrounded the center.
The pearls functioned as physical keys.
Sophie possessed only one.
Victor possessed twenty-three.
Without all of them, the vault could not open.
That night, Victor released a public statement.
He accused Adrian of fabricating Eleanor’s story to seize complete control of Vale Group.
He announced that Sophie’s biological father, Ethan Cross, had granted Victor legal authority to protect the child’s financial interests.
Then Victor produced a video.
Ethan sat in a hospital bed with his shoulder bandaged.
“I authorize Victor Vale to act on behalf of my daughter.”
Adrian knew Ethan was under police guard.
The video had been recorded before Blackwater.
Victor had prepared everything.
Minutes later, the Vale board suspended Adrian as chief executive.

Victor took temporary control of the company.
And his first order was to remove Sophie from Rosemere Mansion.
