Chapter 5: The Blood Between Them

By morning, Rosemere had become a fortress.

Sophie slept in a guest bedroom with June in the adjoining room.

Two guards remained outside.

Adrian did not sleep.

He sat in the library reading Eleanor’s journal until sunrise.

Between descriptions of confinement and fear, Eleanor had written about Adrian.

He had been twelve when she disappeared.

She remembered him bringing food to the hidden door.

She remembered him asking why their father would not allow her downstairs.

She remembered promising to return for his birthday.

Adrian had waited for her.

For years, he hated Eleanor for breaking that promise.

Now he understood she had spent those years protecting Nora.

A knock sounded.

Dr. Evelyn Park, Adrian’s personal physician, entered carrying a folder.

“I tested the pearl.”

Adrian looked up.

“You can test a pearl?”

“I tested biological material trapped inside the drill hole.”

“What did you find?”

“Skin cells. Old, but usable.”

“Eleanor’s?”

“Possibly. We need a family comparison.”

Adrian provided a sample.

Sophie’s sample required June’s consent and a court order because of the active custody dispute.

Judge Mercer approved an emergency kinship test.

The results arrived that evening.

Dr. Park gathered Adrian, June, Sophie, and Keane inside the library.

“The child is biologically related to Mr. Vale.”

Sophie looked at Adrian.

“How?”

“The pattern strongly indicates that your grandmother and Mr. Vale shared at least one parent.”

Adrian lowered himself into a chair.

Eleanor had returned.

Not in the way he had imagined during childhood.

She had returned through an eight-year-old girl with scraped knees and a broken necklace.

Sophie studied him.

“What are you to me?”

Adrian tried to calculate the family relationship.

“Your grandmother was my sister.”

“So you’re my great-uncle?”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean I have to call you Great-Uncle Adrian?”

For the first time in twenty-four hours, Adrian smiled.

“Absolutely not.”

Sophie considered him.

“Can I call you Adrian?”

“Yes.”

June wiped her eyes.

The moment did not last.

Keane entered carrying printed security photographs.

“We identified the attacker from Room Seventeen.”

The image showed Ethan Cross—the man who claimed to be Sophie’s father.

He had changed clothing before leaving Rosemere through the laundry courtyard.

“He stole the pearls,” Adrian said.

“And used Victor’s security authorization.”

June’s face hardened.

“We need to leave.”

Adrian looked at her.

“No place is safer.”

“Someone poisoned Gideon inside this mansion. Someone erased cameras. Someone tried to take Sophie through a fake custody claim.”

“She will have full protection.”

“Your family’s protection is the reason her grandmother hid for thirty years.”

Adrian absorbed the accusation.

June was right.

Rosemere’s walls had not protected Eleanor.

They had imprisoned her.

“What do you suggest?”

“I know a place Nora used during her investigation.”

Sophie shook her head.

“Grandma said I had to stay with Adrian.”

June knelt beside her.

“Your grandmother didn’t know what was happening here.”

“She knew someone would come after me.”

Adrian looked at Sophie.

“Did she say anything else?”

“She said the pearl would tell you who I was, but the letter would tell you why they were afraid.”

Adrian returned to Eleanor’s letter.

The remaining pages described a hidden amendment to Malcolm’s trust.

If Eleanor or her descendants were proven alive, control of the Vale Foundation and Rosemere Mansion would transfer immediately to them.

But the company shares would remain under temporary management until the heir turned twenty-five.

The temporary manager was not Adrian.

It was Gideon Shaw.

If Gideon died or became incapable, management transferred to Victor Vale.

Adrian finally understood.

Gideon had concealed Eleanor’s survival because her return would give him control of nearly half the company.

Victor needed Gideon removed to inherit that authority.

Sophie was not merely an heir.

She was the mechanism through which Victor could seize Vale Group.

“He does not want her dead,” Adrian said.

June stared at him.

“Victor needs Sophie legally recognized. Then he needs custody or control of her trust.”

“And Ethan Cross’s claim gives him access.”

Adrian nodded.

The forged father was designed to become Sophie’s guardian.

Once recognized, Ethan could sign financial documents under Victor’s direction.

“What happens if Sophie dies?” June asked.

“The shares return to the broader Vale trust, which Victor and I control equally.”

“So she is worth more alive.”

“For now.”

Adrian called an emergency board meeting.

Victor joined remotely from his city apartment.

Adrian placed the DNA report on the table.

“Eleanor’s bloodline survives.”

Board members erupted.

Some demanded independent testing.

Others asked whether the child would control the foundation.

Victor remained calm.

“This proves a distant biological relationship. It does not prove inheritance.”

Adrian held up Eleanor’s journal.

“The court will decide.”

Victor smiled.

“And until then?”

“Sophie remains under protection.”

“Yours?”

“Yes.”

“You have no legal custody.”

“Neither does your hired actor.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Adrian continued.

“Ethan Cross used your security code.”

“That code was stolen.”

“He also carried a capsule manufactured by your company.”

Victor leaned toward the camera.

“You are accusing me of poisoning Gideon?”

“I am giving you an opportunity to explain.”

“I do not need to explain anything to a man being manipulated by a child.”

Sophie stood in the doorway.

She had heard him.

Adrian’s anger became immediate.

“You will never speak about her that way again.”

Victor ended the call.

Minutes later, Vale Group’s legal department received a court petition.

Ethan Cross requested full custody of Sophie.

Attached was a second DNA report.

It claimed a 99.8 percent probability that Ethan was her father.

Dr. Park examined the document.

“This test is either real or an extremely sophisticated forgery.”

June looked at Sophie.

Nora had never told anyone the identity of Sophie’s father.

The official birth certificate left the line blank.

Adrian studied Ethan’s photograph.

“What if Victor did not invent the father?”

June’s expression shifted.

“What if he found him?”

Sophie listened from the doorway.

The family mystery had changed again.

She had found her grandmother’s brother.

But somewhere beyond Rosemere’s gates, a dangerous man might truly be her father.
